A Crisis of ComplexityA Crisis of Complexity

All enterprise environments are heterogeneous– Disparate platforms, infrastructure, software

Data volume is growing exponentially– Data Management systems must be extended and

improved to cope

Business requirements are driving the need for a service-based infrastructure

– Existing architecture inadequate, not designed to manage the extended enterprise

– Semantics within organizations, systems, and functional areas impede interoperability, inhibit cohesion

Web Services - What it Really IsWeb Services - What it Really Is A standardized architecture for enabling the

interoperability between disparate applications, platforms, and systems

– XML - the bedrock

– SOAP & WSDL, the protocols

– UDDI - pushing it out to the world - think “Yellow Pages” Fundamentally about the Web-enabling of business

processes– An evolution

– Unprecedented industry consortium

• SUN, IBM, Microsoft, BEA, etc.

• Solid roster of Standards Bodies

– W3C, WS-I, OASIS

The Shifting Security ParadigmThe Shifting Security ParadigmSecurity is moving beyond the perimeter

Used to stop at the edge of the network Extending the enterprise requires a dynamic security

model Internal interoperability will require increased multi-layer

permissions and authentications at the user level Introduces a new challenge of complexity

– Perimeter addresses what machines are on which networks, which protocols through which ports

– Application level is about which service requestors are permitted to take on which roles that allow controlled access to which operations and data, and how integrity and confidentiality can be ensured both in transit and in storage!

Why Network Identity?Why Network Identity?

Web Services is all about reducing friction in business Security increases friction and slows processes NW Identity and Single Sign-on are WS Enablers

– Help alleviate security-induced friction

Common sets of business rules need to be applied across the value chain

Loose coupling requires more authentication layers A federated value chain has users both within and outside of the

organization– Complexity increases– Process must be simplified at the user level

– Must be more than just a nice presentation layer– Single sign on becomes an imperative

Risks and RewardsRisks and Rewards

Primary Risk – Emergence of Disparate Standards Example: BPEL4WS vs. WS Choreography Example: Liberty Alliance vs. All things Microsoft Example: JAVA/J2EE vs. .NET

Upside – Better Integration, Within the Organization and among Trading Partners

Leverage existing IT assets More effective control of user and client data Law of Increasing Returns
