Learning Targets
I can describe a combustion reaction. I can differentiate between complete
and incomplete combustion.

If there is plenty of oxygen the products of burning hydrocarbon fuels are always carbon dioxide and water. This is complete combustion.
methane + oxygen
paraffin + oxygen
kerosene + oxygen
carbon dioxide + water
CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O
Combustion
General Formula:
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water
CO2 + H2O
CO2 + H2O

How are combustion reactions used in our daily lives?
Candles Campfires Fireplaces Car engines Grills Gas stoves Kerosene Heaters

When there is not enough oxygen for complete combustion to occur, incomplete combustion takes place.
methane + oxygen carbon monoxide + water
CH4 + O2 CO + H2O
Incomplete Combustion
General Formula:
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen Carbon Monoxide + Water

Carbon Monoxide Why is the formation of carbon monoxide a serious
concern?
It’s a poisonous gas that is both colorless and odorless. Carbon monoxide can bind to oxygen in the blood and cause CO poisoning.
Symptoms include headache, dizziness, and nausea. Eventually suffocation can be a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Proper ventilation and the use of carbon monoxide detectors in the home can help to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
