Dear Members,
As I reflect on the last
fiscal year for this Annual
Report issue of Member News, I
see much for which we can be
thankful and positive despite
the significant challenges of the
current economic situation.
On October 1, with the
departure of Tom Aageson as
Foundation executive director,
John P. Easley took the helm.
His hiring was the result of a rigorous, all-inclusive process
involving Foundation and Museum of New Mexico representa-
tives. John possesses a wealth of museum development experi-
ence at several large, well-known institutions. His unique set of
credentials bodes well for our future.
Last year we also reorganized our development structure,
creating decentralized development teams for each of our four
museums, Office of Archaeological Studies, and six monuments.
Our goal is to better align the Foundation’s structure with that of
the Department of Cultural Affairs. We are optimistic that this
approach will produce improved financial results to fund the
Museum of New Mexico divisions.
Looking to 2011, we plan a comprehensive review of the
Foundation’s mission and the roles and responsibilities of each
component in the Museum of New Mexico system. We intend
to maximize effectiveness and efficiency throughout and will
involve all of our partners in this exciting process.
Finally, in this issue of Member News, we look at how three
of our trustees are reaching out to new constituencies to build
support and funding for our institutions. Thanks to everyone
who supported our work in 2010. I ask for your continued and
increased support this year as we strive to better meet the needs
of a changing cultural environment.
With respect and anticipation of the future,
Bud Hamilton
Board Chairman

Leroy Garcia, Foundation trustee and co-chair of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture fund raising team, has introduced a new audience of donors and supporters to the museum. Garcia is the owner of Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe and Blue Rain Contemporary in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Garcia’s sentiment proved truer than ever for the Foundation in 2010. In a challenging arts-and-culture economy, the idea of growing cultural support
might have seemed next to impossible. But for Garcia and two other enthusi-astic Foundation trustees, obstacles became opportunity as each used who and
what they know to forge new community connections and cultural support.

rallying the native arts teaM
“Unless galleries get engaged and realize that we are all on the same team, no one benefits,” says Garcia, a longtime gallerist whose extensive business network includes a core of contemporary Native artists and Native art collectors. As co-chair of the fund raising team for the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) with Museum Director Shelby Tisdale, Garcia is finding creative ways to turn his gallery supporters into museum supporters. “We had a huge base of collectors who weren’t aware of MIAC, but through MIAC, we’ve made them aware,” he says.
Last summer, when Blue Rain invited clients to its annual Indian Market party, the invitation included a letter introducing them to the museum, offering private museum collection tours, and encouraging them to become museum donors. More recently, Garcia steered clients toward contributing funding, and in some cases, works of art to a new exhibition, Creative Spark! The Art and Life of Tony Da. He also commonly calls up other gallery owners and asks them to get involved.

“Who we know is who we are,” says Leroy Garcia, a two-year Museum of New Mexico Foundation Trustee
and owner of Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe.

While it's uncommon for gallerists to share clients, Garcia views crossover support as vital to the survival and long term health of the Native arts community—artists, galleries, and museums alike.
“We’re into working with anyone we can to help fur-ther a medium and help artists in their career," he says. “The museums are an integral part of that. A museum exhibit brings attention to the entire market. Galleries have capitalized on art-ists, such as Tony Da, so they should contribute to the system.”
Garcia says changes in the Native arts community make museum relationships even more valuable.
“The Native collector base is shrinking. The older gen-eration is passing away. We have to get back to educating people about Native art. We have to build these interests, and one way to do this is through museums.”

building CirCles of support
Jamie Lewinger knows Albuquerque. As The Circles membership chair, Lewinger’s passionate personal mission is to introduce her Albuquerque neighbors to the Foundation and its affiliated muse-ums, monuments, and Office or Archaeological Studies.
“My experience is there is a general lack of understanding, confusion even, in Albuquerque about the museum foundation and who it serves,” says the part-time legal assistant.
Hoping to remedy that, Lewinger recently recruited a committee of Albuquerque residents to plan an original lecture series. Its purpose was to educate a new audience about the richness and diversity of the state museum system and to encourage them to join The Circles, the upper-level membership category at $1,500 and above. Sponsored by the Garcia Automotive Group and Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Cultural Center, the four-part series brought Museum of New Mexico directors to the stunning Los Poblanos in Albuquerque’s North Valley for lectures on art, history, archaeology, and cultural personalities. It was a sold-out success.
“We got people who never had any exposure to the museums to join The Circles,” she says. “We had existing Albuquerque members increase their level of membership. Every member of my com-
mittee joined, too.” Now a Foundation trustee, Lewinger is
ready for the next act. With about 1,000 current Foundation members and a city full of arts and culture lovers, she says Albuquerque is “still untapped compared to its potential.” Her committee is making plans for an Albuquerque tour of homes and private salon-style dinner parties for prospective members.
“I love The Circles group, the exclusivity of it, the sneak peeks into private homes and collec-tions, the interesting and historic nature of many events,” she says. “I think others here would be thrilled to be part of this special group. I have lots of ideas, lots of contacts and connections. I’m ready to make them.”
Jamie Lewinger, Foundation trustee and The Circles membership chair, poses with an Alexander Girard licensed bicycle, pillow, and chair at The Circles lecture series at Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Cultural Center in Albuquerque.

starting a MonuMental Conversation
As a native New Mexican and history buff, there are few points of state history or sites of interest that Carlota Baca doesn’t know. But when the longtime Foundation trustee agreed to serve as co-chair of the fund raising team for the New Mexico State Monuments, she real-ized there were gaps in her education. Recalling the team’s first visit to the Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner, a military fort where thousands of Navajo and Apache Indians were imprisoned and died in the 1860s, Baca confronted the horrific details of what she describes as “essentially a Navajo holocaust.”
“I had been to Coronado monument when I was a kid, but I really hadn’t been to the other monuments,” she says. “Bosque Redondo was eye-opening. How could something so hor-rible have taken place down there that I knew so little about?”
Working closely with state Cultural Resources Program Manager Rick Reycraft, Baca’s team is looking for ways to increase public awareness of and funding for the state’s six far-flung monuments. With representatives from throughout the state, many of them monument Friends group members, the team has begun a series of site visits to assess each monument’s fund raising potential and to compare notes about their diverse locales.
At Bosque Redondo, which opened in 2005, the team encountered a beautiful, but still-empty, exhibition hall that inspired them to urge the state to finally fund a long-awaited exhibition. At Coronado monument outside Albuquerque, where the ancient Kuaua murals are in serious need of restoration, they discussed ways to help raise money. In April, they will travel to Lincoln State Monument. Wherever they go, they see opportunities for funding programs, structural preservation, signage, road work, and other critical needs.
As a testament to their enthusiasm, team members have already contributed $8,000 to their own cause. They hope to raise $100,000 in the next three years.
“This is the only fund raising team whose members represent the entire state,” Baca says. “They are grass-roots, wonderful people who are committed to their com-munities and to the monument system.”
While increasing private support for the monuments is the ultimate goal, Baca says the team’s current value is in the conversation among individual constituents, monuments staff, and Foundation trustees. Only four monuments—Coronado, Fort Stanton, Lincoln, and Bosque Redondo—have active Friends groups, so there is much to learn about cultivating new community sup-
port. The monuments charge small admission fees, so they rely heavily on donations, leaving great potential for creative fund raising.
“These places operate out of sheer love and nickels and dimes from their communities,” Baca says. “They don’t have the wealth of Santa Fe or its proximity of donors. What they do have is military history, Indian history, community history, beautiful scenery. There are a lot of hooks for building a statewide constituency.”
If her own experience holds true, Baca says the mon-uments will one day be counted among New Mexico’s most exciting attractions. “This has been a wonderful experience for me. I’ve been completely seduced by the monuments,” she says. â–
