Our Team Project is Measuring Up! – with Math and Technology + Science = MATS

Our intent was to bridge the gap across the curriculum with Math and Science by incorporating Technology.

Our target area were 7th grade students at all levels and to increase the achievement gap with African American Male Students with proven technology enhancements.

Our biggest challenge was to consider what assistive technologies we would need to address the learning needs of the visual and hearing impaired students.

Another challenge that we thought might play a vital role in our project was the budget crisis.

We wanted to research effective technology tools that were free to help all educators bridge the achievement gap in Math and Science.

When we began collaborating, we had to consider who we need to collaborate with to make our project a success. LaKimberly Wilson and Gayle Powell-Cleary thought that our learning team composition should consist of the members of the collaborative group, the special education CILT member and department and campus administrative team (Principals, Academics Coach, and Counselor), along with parents and the TAG teacher to assist with instructional strategies.One thing that we all had in common was that we all have worked with all levels of students and we were able to bring different point of view from multiple content areas.

My strongest asset is my knowledge and resourcefulness when researching Web 2.0 tools, that we could incorporate into our thematic unit. While researching, the one website that I learned about, was microsoft.com. It is one that everyone has heard of but I don’t think that everyone really knows how many free resources are readily available.

If you visit www.microsoft.com, you will be able to view tutorial of assistive technology, as well as you will be able to view mini videos on how you can make minor adjustments to your computer to assist your students needs. We are going to share with you how to make your text larger or smaller. This resource is useful if you want to draw attention to certain parts or features of the lesson. Also, the magnification feature helps those students who have trouble seeing small text and makes it easier for students to follow along.

Lastly, we thought that the effectiveness will be assessed through the use of formative assessments (ex. observation, accountable talk) and summative assessment. Students will be given a common assessment across the curriculum in math and science. Then, the students will use Classroom Performance System (CPS units or clickers) so that the teacher and students can receive immediate feedback and results.

We felt that science is an area in which observations are done constantly, both formal and informal assessments would be used as well. These assessments would consist of laboratory experiments and digital journals to document student growth. With just the use of software applications such as Microsoft Word or Excel students could track and record their findings.
