Mothering SundayOn the fourth Sunday of Lent, it’s Mothering Sunday. No one is absolutely sure exactly how the idea of Mothering Sunday began, but we know that on this day, three or four hundred years ago, people who lived in little villages made a point of going not to their local church, but to the nearest big church. Some would go to the city to worship in the cathedral. A cathedral is a very large church and the mother church of all other churches in the area.

In Victorian times, many young girls ‘went into service’. That means they left their homes to go and work as maids or servants in the houses of wealthy families. Most servants lived in the houses of their employers and had to work all the year round.

This day, always a Sunday, is a day for rejoicing. Services in Roman Catholic churches begin with these words from the Bible: “Rejoice ye with Jerusalem and be glad with her …..”. Why though, should people rejoice in the middle of Lent? The answer is, because Easter is getting closer. Soon the time of fasting will be over and there will be the excitement of Easter Day.
