Meriden Public Library will host the program “An Education in the grotesque: the gargoyles of Yale University” presented by Mathew Duman on Monday, March 2 at 7:00 pm in the Griffin Room. Mr. Duman will highlight a selection of gargoyles and grotesques found on the b u i l d i n g s o f Y a l e University’s campus in New H a v e n , C t . U s i n g photographs from his book “An Education in the Grotesque: The Gargoyles of Yale University”, he explores the artistic, historic, architectural and even humorous significance of these decorative sculptures a n d t h e i r r o l e i n communicating the identity o f Y a l e U n i v e r s i t y as a place of learning and enlightenment.
Mathew Duman is a photographer and graphic designer who grew up in Bethany, Connecticut. While s tudying abroad, he developed a fascination with the grotesque sculptures of t h e c a t h e d r a l s o f Britain. In addition to England, Matt has made photographic trips to Italy, Africa, Australia, and N e w Z e a la n d . M a t t currently works at the Knights of Columbus in New Haven. He began exploring the variety of sculpture found on the buildings of Yale University a few years ago and as a personal project, has researched and documented these “new world” grotesques which are closer, but no less bewitching than their European counterparts.

C o n n ec t i c u t M as t e r Wildlife Conservationist Felicia Ortner will present the program “The Bear Reality” on Monday, March 23 at 6:30 pm in the Griffin Room.
Black bear sightings have continued to increase in Connecticut since the 1 9 8 0 s w h e n t h e Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s
Wildlife Division first had evidence of a resident bear population. With the n u m b e r o f b e a r s increasing in the state, it is important for residents to learn the facts about black bears and how to coexist with them. Felicia Ortner is a Master Wildlife Conservationist and bear enthusiast. She
will dispel some of the myths associated with bears, provide natural history information, and talk about some of the results of the black bear research conducted by wildlife biologists in the state. All are welcome to this free
program.
