Panzer-Armeeoberkommando 4 (Fourth Panzer Army) 69 The predecessor of the Fourth Panzer Army, the XVI Corps, was formed in Berlin in 1937 for the purpose of controlling the panzer divisions then active or in the process of being activated. It fought as the XVI Corps in Poland in 1939 and in the campaign in the West in 194-0. In December 194-0 the Fourth Panzer Group (Panzergruppe 4-) was activated, taking over the activities of the XVI Corps. On October 5, 1941, the Fourth Panzer Group was renamed Fourth Panzer Army (Panzer- AOK 4-). It participated in the eastern campaign, moving from the central to the southern sector in the early summer of 194-2, where it was heavily engaged at Stalingrad. It was again heavily engaged in the autumn of 194-3 in offensive and defensive battles west of Kiev. Early in 194-4- it withdrew across the northern Ukraine and in July 1944- to the Vistula, where it maintained a defensive position. It withdrew from the Vistula across Poland to Upper Silesia during the Soviet winter offensive in January 194-5. The Fourth Panzer Army disbanded on May 8, 194-5. Commanding generals between December 194-0 and May 194-5 were Generals Erich Hoepner, Richard Ruoff, Hermann Hoth, Erhard Raus, Walter Nehring, Josef Harpe, Hermann Balck, and Fritz-Hubert Gr'aser.* Organization Index Abteilungen Dates .     The predecessor of the Fourth Panzer Army, the XVI Corps, was formed in Berlin in1937 for the purpose of controlling the panzer divisions then active or in theprocess of being activated. It fought as the XVI Corps in Poland in 1939 and inthe campaign in the West in 194-0. In December 194-0 the Fourth Panzer Group(Panzergruppe 4-) was activated, taking over the activities of the XVI Corps. OnOctober 5, 1941, the Fourth Panzer Group was renamed Fourth Panzer Army (Panzer-AOK 4-).
