Please excuse our dust...Since we have a mid-month channel changeover, this guide may seem a bit confusing. Please go to wtvp.org or call 309-495-0591 for more information.

WTVP has always been dedicated to educational programming, but starting January 16th our emphasis will be showcased with a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week PBS Kids channel! The PBS Kids channel will air on 47.2. This channel combined with PBS Learning Media online service provides children and their families with round-the-clock, award-winning, PBS Kids programming whether through television or web. The most popular time for children to view television, is during the early evening of “primetime” (5-9 pm). PBS recognized the need to reach children and their families during these and other critical watching hours. Television is still the primary source for video viewing but an increasing number of children are accessing video content through digital and mobile devices. With this new access, all children will be able to view PBS Kids programming, whether they watch on television or the web. Plus, web viewers will also get the chance to play games and do activities related to the show they just watched.

“The new PBS KIDS 24/7 channel and live stream offered by local member stations ensure that educational media is available to all families, all the time and via a platform that works for them. Given that 54% of all children nationwide do not have the opportunity to attend preschool, providing access is a critical element of our public service mission.”, said PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger.

Favorite PBS Kids shows such as Wild Kratts, Odd Squad, Nature Cat, Ready Jet Go!, and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, as well as the

latest new hit Splash and Bubbles, will all be included in the new programming. You can find the new PBS Kids

station on channel 47.2

Please see page 12 for the daily PBS Kids schedule.

Notes from the President & CEORecently, the role of media in our society has taken center stage. The line between truth and fiction is not just blurred; it’s completely disappeared. False news makes more headlines than real news, and memes full of inaccuracies are treated as legitimate news sources. Our work is always important, but at this point in our history, it’s crucial. As a community-focused local media organization, we’re recommitting ourselves to connecting with diverse communities across our region. That includes bringing people together through community conver-sations, highlighting a wider range of voices in our program-ming and providing people in central Illinois with the tools to help increase media literacy and separate fact from fiction and reliable source from fake news. On the national level, PBS is focused on building stronger re-lationships with members to bring you factual stories that add context and understanding. This is a moment of self-reflection

for many media organizations, and as we look ahead to the challenges our communities face in the coming days, months, and years, it’s more clear than ever than you expect public media to seek the truth, hold leaders account-able, inform and inspire and bring you high-quality news and information that you can trust. As we enter this New Year, we renew our commitment to bringing you high-quality programs here at WTVP.

Schedule is subject to change without notice.

SherlockSherlock will return to screens with three brand-new episodes promising laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and some extraordinary adventures.

Season four begins with the nation’s favorite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife Mary prepare for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents.

Benedict Cumberbatch said he was “genuinely thrilled to be back filming Sherlock with all the cast and crew. I can’t wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait...though not for long...And it will be worth it.”

Co-creators, writers and executive producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss say: “Sherlock series four - here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street - and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax.”

Rebecca Eaton, executive producer of MASTERPIECE on PBS says, “This is the kind of news that has our audience cheering. Along with our millions of fans, I can’t wait to see what the boys do next.”

Sue Vertue, Executive Producer, Hartswood Films says: “It’s taken a while to gather everyone together for series four but I can confidently say I think it will be well worth the wait!”

NatureSnowbound: Animals of WinterThe coldest and snowiest places on earth pose a challenge to anyone visiting such locations as the Arctic Circle or Antarctica, but what about the year-round animal population? How do they cope for many months with life in these frozen wonderlands where temperatures can plummet to as low as minus 50 degrees? Gordon Buchanan, a wildlife cameraman used to filming in frigid lands around the globe, explains how creatures like the wolf, Arctic fox, bison, reindeer, lynx, weasel, polar bear, penguin, Weddell seal, and woolly bear cat-erpillar adapt to their surroundings or employ clever tactics to survive. Snowbound: Animals of Winter airs Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 8 p.m. After the broadcast, the episode will be available for limited online streaming at pbs.org/nature.

In the opening segment, Buchanan is seen calmly stroking the thick coat of a wolf in Norway’s Polar Park where wolves have grown up with humans around so they are used to people. He shows how the wolf ’s fine hairs provide much needed insulation, while its longer, outer hairs repel snow and water. Also helping to reduce a wolf ’s heat loss, despite its paws being in constant contact with ice and snow, is an ingenious adaptation: an image displayed on a thermal camera illustrates that as a wolf ’s warm blood flows down its leg, it cools down. This means only cold blood stays within the paws and all the warm blood can remain within the body.

Rachel Carson: American ExperienceA new two-hour documentary on the influential writer and scientist airs Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. Inspired by recent scholarship, the film illuminates the public and private life of the wom-an whose writings revolutionized how we understand our relationship with the natural world. Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Mary-Louise Parker lends her talents as the voice of Rachel Carson.

When Carson’s seminal book Silent Spring was published in 1962, the United States was the world’s leading superpower and industrial power-house. A warning about the long-term dangers of pesticides, the book became a phenomenon, sparking a nationwide debate that featured vigorous attacks by the chemical industry and influ-encing President John F. Kennedy to launch an investigation into the public health effects. In the end, Silent Spring effectively launched the modern environmental movement.

“Despite her fame, Rachel Carson has remained an enigmatic figure,” said Mark Samels, American Experience Executive Producer. “At a time when she was keeping her own illness secret, this shy, private woman was thrust into the limelight after writing Silent Spring. In the 60s, chemicals were everywhere — in food, in crops, in ev-erything. Carson was the first person to point out there’s a price to be paid for that world. She guided us towards an understanding of the interrelated-ness of nature, and challenged us to think about our impact on the world around us.

4December 31 & January 1—Count down to 2017 Create’s entertaining experts. Rick Bayless, Mary Ann Esposito and Christina Pirello prepare creative cock-tails and decadent appetizers. Smart and savvy traveler Rudy Maxa provides tips on buying bubbly while tour-ing the Champagne region of France. And Katie Brown reveals simple and elegant ideas for hosting with style.

4 January 7 & 8, 2017—Infused Flavors Prepare your palate as Create’s top chefs awaken your taste buds with their bold, flavor-packed recipes. Satisfy your craving for Cuban-style sofrito in Sara Moulton’s kitchen. Sample sweet and savory Italian dishes from Lidia Bastianich. Soak up seafood smoking techniques from Steven Raichlen. And grill steak the Nick Stellino way — with a tomato-infused marinade.

Victoria on MasterpieceThe image of Queen Victoria seared into popular culture is one of an older, dour woman, swathed in black, looking as if she never cracked a smile. So when Jenna Coleman (“Dr. Who”), a beautiful slip of a woman, portrays her as joyful, it’s jolting. At 18 — still known as Alexandrina, and playing with dolls — she’s awakened one morning and informed she is now queen of England.

MASTERPIECE’s “Victoria” seduces us into a world where the petite queen taps inner resolve. The seven episodes, premiering Jan. 15, offer grand sets, lush countryside, castle intrigue and a study of lives that shaped history.

Despite being surrounded by relatives with the worst intentions, Victoria musters the calm dignity of a true leader.

“I know I am young and some would say my sex puts me at a disadvantage,” Victoria says facing her critics. “But I assure you I am ready for the great responsibility that lies before me.”

Victoria relies on Lord Melbourne (Rufus Sewell) as her tutor and confidante at the start of her 63-year reign.

Coleman came to know Victoria’s passion through the queen’s diaries — 62 million words of them. That passion is most evident when she and her first cousin, Prince Albert (Tom Hughes), fall in love at first dance.

When her Uncle Leopold orders her to marry, so her husband can advise her, Victoria tells him: “I think you forget I am of a royal line that stretches back a thousand years, whereas you are the king of Belgium, which did not exist a decade ago.”
