Police have warned about the dangers of motorised bicycles, as riders continue to risk their own safety and endanger other road users and pedestrians across Wyndham.

With many petrol-powered bicycles classed as motorcycles, riders may also be breaking the law.

e police warnings came as a Star Weekly reader raised her concerns aer seeing children on motorised bicycles weaving in and out of busy trac in Point Cook last week.

e Sanctuary Lakes resident, who did not want to be named, said she watched in horror as two boys weaved between vehicles in peak-hour trac on Point Cook and Dunnings roads on January 14.

ey were switching lanes and travelling faster than the other trac, she said.

ese boys were wearing helmets, but Ive also seen riders who havent been wearing helmets.

According to VicRoads, a motorised bicycle is no longer classed as a bicycle if the motor is the primary source of power and the motors power output exceeds 200 watts.

Motorised bicycle riders are required to hold a motorcycle licence, register the vehicle, wear an approved motorcycle helmet, and not ride on footpaths or bicycle paths.

A 14-year-old boy was killed when he was hit by two cars while riding his motorised bicycle near

Liverpool, New South Wales, in October 2013.

Wyndham road policing adviser Senior Sergeant Damien Madden said motorised bicycles were potentially very dangerous and many would fail Australian safety standards.

eres a signicant risk of serious trauma, especially for children if theyre riding them on the roads, he

said. Children may not realise the signicance of what theyre doing so its up to their parents, who are the ones who buy these things, to educate them.

ey probably think theyre just going out for a ride, but they dont realise that by riding some of these motorised bicycles they could potentially be charged with a number of oences and face nes of up to $1500.

Senior Sergeant Madden said Wyndham highway patrol regularly conducted o-road patrols on the lookout for motorised bicycles and trailbikes being ridden illegally through parks and reserves across the municipality.

5A community-based drug and rehabilitation service will soon open its doors in Hoppers Crossing in a bid to tackle the growing ice problem head on.

Dubbed Destiny Transformations, a partnership of the Destiny Centre Christian Church and a Queensland rehabilitation organisation, the new service will open a 12-bed centre next month.

e centre will provide a holistic approach to recovery, with therapy and case management covering four areas, including biological and spiritual needs.

Director Dean Landy said the aim was to give hope to those who feel hopeless.

A growing public awareness of the ice problem has highlighted that something dierent needed to be done, he said. is problem cant simply be addressed with new laws and tougher sentencing for dealers.

We need to look deeper and more long-term to see how we can rebuild lives that continue to be destroyed.

Transformations executive director Michael Barrett said the centre would oer a nationally recognised drug and alcohol treatment service that has been running in Queensland since 1999.

Each year we have the privilege of seeing many people experiencing diculty in overcoming their addictions. ey come in with a past and leave with a future, Mr Barrett said.

    More details are at: www.transformation.net.au.

Last week, council chief executive Kerry ompson said the purchase was future- focused.

She said the site could serve a number of purposes in years to come.

However, it would most likely be initially used as a single-storey carpark.

e exact nature and operational details of the carpark, as well as the overall direction for car parking in the CBD, will be informed by the councils car parking strategy, Ms ompson said.

e purchase faces criticism from CBD Landowners Group, which fears an on-site car park will increase congestion on Cherry Street.

Wyndham council is continuing to delay revealing how much it paid for the former home of Werribee Hyundai in Cherry Street.

But indications are the price tag may be higher than expected. In a written statement, council sustainable development director Dean Rochfort said it would be premature to disclose the purchase price.

As reported by Star Weekly, the council Star Weekly, the council Star Weeklybought the 3200-square-metre block at 37 Cherry Street, Werribee, in December last year.

Sources have told Star Weekly it is likely the council paid $4.8 million for the site. It is also

understood the council bought two adjoining blocks for about $300,000 each.

Mr Rochfort said there were several reasons the council had not revealed the purchase price.

e sale process still has a number of key steps to occur, including satisfactory site remediation, settlement and transfer of title, he said. Under the terms of the contract, council must also obtain consent of the vendor to release the price.

Mr Rochfort also indicated the council did not know exactly how much the purchase would end up costing, adding that the ultimate resolution of site remediation may impact on the nal price paid.

Its a birthday party 100 years in the making.Werribee re brigade kicked o its centenary

celebrations in style last weekend, with volunteer reghters from across Victoria competing in Australian Day championships at Galvin Park.

Brigades from as far away as Swan Hill and Mildura took part in the two-day event, testing members skills and tness against each other and the clock, and using a range of reghting equipment, including hoses and ladders.

e festivities continued on Saturday night as 26 brigades took part in a torchlight procession along Watton Street, Werribee.

Werribee brigade captain Michael Wells said the march was a humbling experience.

Several of our members who have been with the brigade for more than 50 years led the procession and for them it was quite emotional to be acknowledged, not only by their peers but by the community, he said.

It was a privilege to have so many colleagues come down and take part. It was a very successful weekend, Mr Wells said.

Were one of the largest volunteer re brigades in the state and certainly one of the busiest, and were one of the fastest growing municipalities in the country, so were unique.

As well as reghting, weve led the way with our professionalism, and our road rescue team has showcased its skills around the world, so thats something of which the Wyndham community can be proud, he said.

Were always looking for new members, so we encourage people to drop by the station and get involved.

e brigades 100th celebrations will continue with an open day on February 28 at the station on the corner of Anderson and Gibbons streets, Werribee.

Wyndham women need to do more to reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer.

New Cancer Council data shows the city has one of the lowest pap screening rates in the metropolitan area, with only 50 per cent of Wyndham women being screened in 2012-13.

e Melbourne local government area had the lowest screening rate, with only 44.4 per cent of women screened, while the state average is 60.4 per cent.

living in Wyndham who were born overseas, in countries where English is not the rst language, so they might not understand the messages around screening, she said.

We have been doing a lot of work with culturally and linguistically diverse

PapScreen Victoria manager Hiranthi Perera said up to 90 per cent of cervical cancer cases could be avoided with regular screening.

e rates of the two-year participation in women aged 20 to 69 has increased in recent years, but substantial variation exists between dierent areas of Victoria, which is of concern, she said.

Ms Perera said Wyndhams large migrant population could be a factor in the citys low rate of pap screen testing.

ere is quite a high proportion of people

communities to increase screening rates. One of the things we have done is ensure women access information in their own language

e Cancer Council is warning women who had received the HPV vaccine not to become complacent.

We know 80 per cent of women who develop cervical cancer havent had regular screening, Ms Perera said. at proves the eectiveness of the screening program.

It might be embarrassing and awkward, but its a couple of minutes that could save a life.

Police are looking for the occupants of an out-of-control car that ran o the road, crashed through a fence and narrowly missed a Werribee house on January 16.

e red Holden VX Commodore ploughed through a brick fence in front of the property on the corner of Market Road and Meek Street just before 7pm.

e car came to rest just short of the house. No one was home at the time.First Constable Andrew North, of Wyndham

highway patrol, said police believed the male driver and female passenger ed in another car with a dog.

At this stage, its unknown how fast the car was travelling leading up to the crash, but we found tyre marks on the road which indicate it was still accelerating, he said.

Were still trying to determine whether the car involved was stolen, but we understand the

driver was seen several times around Werribee on the same night.

e driver was described as a Caucasian man in his early 30s, 184 centimetres tall, unshaven with a light goatee beard, solid build and possibly of New Zealand or Pacic Islander descent. He was wearing dark pants, a dark T-shirt and white cap.

Wyndham council is taking a stand against family violence, as the number of reported incidents in the municipality surge past the state average.

Figures from the Western Integrated Family Violence Committee reveal that in 2013-14, there were 2278 reports of family violence in Wyndham more than double the year before.

Across the state, family violence oences rose by 14.4 per cent during the same period.

In a bid to tackle the problem, the council has created a family violence prevention

sport with them, go to school with them or work alongside them. ese people nearly always women might be our mothers, sisters, nieces, daughters or granddaughters, he said.

We all have a role to play in creating a community that protects anyone who is exposed to any form of violence.

e council is nalising membership of the

sub-committee, which will be chaired by White Ribbon Day ambassador and Wyndham community safety roundtable chairman Cr Peter Gibbons.

e creation of this sub-committee could not come soon enough, Cr Gibbons said.

Although these gures reect an increasing social acceptance of reporting such crimes, Wyndhams level of family violence is far and away the highest in Melbournes west.

It also exceeds the statewide average.Cr Gibbons said the stark statistics

represented real people. We might pass them on the street, play

new committee, which will meet quarterly. It is likely to include representatives of Victoria Police, the Justice Department, Western Integrated Family Violence Committee, Wyndham Legal Service, Womens Health West, and Anglicare.

In August, the council made a submission to a federal Senate inquiry into domestic violence and called for greater resources to tackle the problems and issues it presents.

In its submission, the council pointed out that Wyndham had more reports of family violence in the four years to 2012-13 than any other Melbourne growth area.

New-precinct plans extendedDevelopers can now submit longer-term plans for the East Werribee Employment Precinct as part of changes announced by the state government last week. In 2008, East Werribee was selected as the future site of a major metropolitan centre, which would eventually be home to 7000 families and 58,000 jobs. Treasurer and Werribee MP Tim Pallas said reviving the original plans for the site would provide greater exibility and was expected to increase the quality of bids for the 400 hectares of land.

New soccer leagueThe world game has taken Australia by storm. A new community football (soccer) league will kick off in Wyndham this winter, with mens, womens, boys and girls competitions planned. A forum will be held on February 17 from 6.30-7.30pm at the Grange Reserve, Hoppers Crossing. Phone Simon Crawford on 8734 5488 or e-mail [email protected].

W eerama has struck a note, with many readers contacting me with their thoughts on the festival not going ahead in 2015. I agree this has been badly handled by a number of parties. But the nger pointing does no one any good, so I wont get involved in that. I stand by my opinion that in its current form the festival is dead. ats an opinion shared by the Weerama committee and expressed in several emails I have received in the past week. e question remains: is there a future for a community festival of any kind in the City of Wyndham? I think the answer is yes, but not until there are funds to support it. I ask the council to be up front on Weerama and let everyone know the ins and outs. I think everyone involved would like a sensible debate.

Ihave always thought it a waste of time trying to do business with anyone in the new year until you get past the Australia Day weekend. Nothing has changed this year to make me feel dierently. We are now ocially back in business mode for 2015, and while thats

important, Id love us city slickers to embrace a bit of what I encountered over the holidays. We were having lunch at the Bass Hotel and when I was buying drinks, the bartender asked if I had 20 cents to round o the bill. I said no. en came a voice saying I have 20 cents, save you getting all that change. Here you go. Really? Can you imagine that happening at a pub in Hoppers, Werribee or Point Cook? e City of Wyndham used to be known as Werribee, the country suburb. Now were a city, we seem to have lost those country aspects of our way of life. Do you agree, and would you like to see those values back on display? I know I would.

Iunderstand every business needs to account for every cent. I also understand that every business is dierent and has its goals, but whats cakeage all about? We were going to be charged $6.50 per slice for a restaurant to cut up our cake and serve it to us. Id have paid a standard fee, but $6.50 a slice was a bit rich. It wasnt a local business, but Im wondering if this is standard practice.

Kevin Hillier says its time for sensible debate on Weerama

A lack of critical-care facilities has forced the hospital to transfer between 85 and 90 patients a month from its emergency department to other hospitals, which have the capacity to provide intensive, coronary and high-dependency services.

e next stage of the Mercys master plan includes building a critical-care unit, six operating theatres and 56 additional in-patient beds.

In the lead-up to last Novembers state election, Labor promised funding for hospitals across the state, including $200 million for a women and childrens facility at Sunshine Hospital, but Werribee Mercy was overlooked.

At the time, Mercy Health chief executive adjunct professor Stephen Cornelissen said further government funding was essential to help meet the needs of Wyndhams rapidly growing population.

With the closest critical-care unit more than 22 kilometres away, few could argue that the Wyndham community faces some of the poorest access to health services in metropolitan Melbourne, he said.

However, last week, Ms Hennessy told Star Weekly she could oer no guarantees.

eres been $1 billion in cuts to the health system in recent years and, as a government, we have to set priorities, she said.

We dont have an unending bucket of resources, but well continue to work with the Mercy to help relieve some of these demand pressures.

On the issue of Wyndhams police shortage,

Ms Hennessy said she had asked Police Minister Wade Noonan to meet with local ocers to discuss resources.

At a rally in Werribee last September, Police Association secretary Ron Iddles claimed Wyndham would need an extra 159 ocers over the next ve years to meet the state average police-to-population ratio.

community not only feels safe but has condence in police and their capacity, Ms Hennessy said. Im aware of the challenges and, as local member, Ill continue to advocate to ensure we have adequate [police] resources.

With the decline of the manufacturing industry, highlighted by the upcoming closure of Toyotas Altona plant, Ms Hennessy said jobs would be a major focus.

We have signicant issues, particularly when it comes to youth unemployment, she said. Ill be doing whatever I can to advocate for, and generate, new local job opportunities.

Ms Hennessy said it was very important that the government deliver on its election promises, including a new senior school in Point Cook and removing Cherry and Werribee streets level crossings.

Male actors neededWyndham Theatre Company is calling for actors keen to be part of its rst production for 2015 The Haunting of Cathryn Chase. To be directed by Joe Fairhurst, the play is based on 15 years of his research into the killing of two boys on Phillip Island in 1926 and 1933. WTC held rst round auditions earlier this month and covered four female and three male roles, but more males are needed for the play to proceed. Auditions will be held on January 31 at Crossroads Theatre, corner of Synnot and Duncans roads, Werribee. Details: 0404 274 797

New face for networkWestern suburbs real estate veteran David Lawson has joined the Greg Hocking Real Estate network. Mr Lawson said the decision to join the Greg Hocking franchise wasnt a difcult one to make, with the company having a respected reputation.

Penalties a wake-up callAdults who leave children unattended in cars now face nes of $3690 and up to six months jail after penalties were increased. The increase comes as temperatures climb in summer. Previously, people faced nes of $2214 and up to three months jail. The new penalties were passed last year by the former Liberal government but have only now come into effect. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said the laws would provide a wake-up call for everyone, a reminder that leaving children in cars can be fatal.

Provide for the peopleSurely your article in the Wyndham Star Weekly (Win for ambos, patients; January 21, 2015) stating that a new ambulance station to service Wyndham Vale will be located in Russell Street, Werribee, is a misprint?

I drove to and from Russell Street from my Wyndham Vale home six days a week for a year in the recent past. It can take some time to complete the journey. A bit too long in a dire emergency, I suspect.

Is Wyndham Vale destined to remain a dormitory suburb with a new house on every square metre of land? How about a post ofce, hotel/club, metropolitan re brigade station and ambulance station actually located in Wyndham Vale.

Surely demographic projections would justify these facilities.

I wish to stress that I have no criticism whatsoever of emergency service personnel. I merely query the relevant planners.

    Greg Gardiner, Wyndham Vale

Add roads to housingWhats going on with all the new housing development in the Wyndham area?

After I attended the forum back in March to start the push for better roads and more funding etc., I was under the impression the council was not going to support any new housing estate developments that didnt come with the appropriate road infrastructure.

Perhaps the developers dont need council approval as more estates have appeared since that meeting.

And theres several more that have signage and Register now for even more estates.

The very latest signs, complete with a sales ofce prefab and a lovely garden and carpark, have just recently appeared along Dohertys Road a single lane, east-west major road that will soon be funnelling even more trafc.

Couple this new estate with the asco of Derrimut Road roundabout, which hasnt been blessed with dual lanes in each direction, and the trafc expected for the single lane to the new Tarneit station and theres another 15 minutes added to everyones travel time.

How are these estates allowed to progress without support from dual roadways, especially when they put in service lanes in front of their estates with even more in/out bottlenecks slowing further the ow of trafc out of the area?

The Tarneit area is screaming out for dual roads travelling east-west and north-south.

All our major roads are funnelled to the city and to the north into single lanes.

Stop the estates, stop taking developers money and start a roads program.

Or, at the very least, get the developers to fund dual roads to their estates.

    Rick Warnecke, Tarneit

Weerama criticism cynicalRe: The Hillier View: Its time to bid farewell to Weerama. Your comments are becoming more and more cynical and negative, Kevin.

You have an opportunity with your column to promote Wyndham and make positive suggestions rather than the ongoing negatives that seem to becoming more prevalent with this column.

Weerama as a community festival has become a tradition in Wyndham over the years and needs strong support from council for it to continue.

And it still has a lot of support from residents. CBD traders complained about impacts on businesses when Weerama was shifted to another location some time back, and they complain of impact again when its in the CBD. I read somewhere that 47 per cent of CBD traders complained, but doesnt that mean that 53 per cent were okay with it? Refresh it, yes, but some tradition is worth ghting for.

Weerama shouldnt be allowed to die.CeeMee, via web

Werribee author Pauline Toohey wasnt short of ideas when she sat down to write her latest novel.

e former police ocer drew on experiences from her 25-year career with Victoria Police to write the book, which she describes as contemporary crime.

e novel is a signicant change from her rst two books, which were historical ction.

Ms Tooheys new book, My Rickety Metronome, is based on ctional characters who work for Victoria Police, including Detective Sergeant Anna Murdoch.

Its a look at the black humour we use as police to cope with the horrible experiences we encounter, she said. is time, there was no research needed.

Ms Toohey made the transition to writing aer a chance encounter with author Kerry Greenwood, who told her how dicult it was to get police to share their thoughts and experiences about the job.

I whipped this one out quite quickly; the information was at my ngertips, she said.

I really did think back to my own experiences, [particularly] the relationships between coppers and the way we blend our work business with our private lives.

I think readers will get more out of seeing that than the murder thats in the rst story.

While its been almost ve years since Ms Toohey le the police, she still misses the job.

I miss the people, the work and the ups and downs, she said. But life is much slower now.

I can be more selsh and spend time with my family. Before, I couldnt do that.

My Rickety Metronome is available at Dymocks and Readings, as well as Wyndham libraries.

Eight years ago, Ronald Gretton and Georey Matthews decided to build a replica of the rst military plane to take to the skies to mark the centenary of Australian military aviation.

ey never imagined their labor of love would lead to an Order of Australia Medal.

e Werribee residents were included on the Australia Day honours list for their services to the community in preserving our military aviation history.

Mr Gretton and Mr Matthews said they were very humbled to receive the awards.

Geo and I thought the best way to celebrate the centenary of the rst military ight was to have a ying Bristol Boxkite available,

Mr Gretton said. No one else was doing anything to mark the occasion, so we thought we would. We did it because it was something we like doing.

A Bristol Boxkite rst ew on July 29, 1910.e two men spent two years planning how

to build the replica boxkite and a further ve recreating the historic plane, with the help of businesses and supporters of the museum.

When 23-year-old John Belani arrived on Melbournes Station Pier as a Slovakian refugee in 1959, he couldnt have imagined he would one day be awarded one of his adopted countrys highest honours.

On Monday, Mr Belani was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to the Laverton community.

Able to speak only broken English, he was sent to Bonagilla migrant centre in Albury as he took his rst steps towards a new life in Australia.

But things could have turned out very dierently had it not been for his wife, Anna.

When I was in Slovakia, I didnt know anything about Australia, he said.

I wanted to go to the Congo for an adventure, but I met my future wife Anna and she wanted to come to Australia. It was a choice between

following my head or my heart and I followed my heart.

Over the years, Mr Belani has dedicated himself to a number of causes. He co-founded three organisations: the Good News Lutheran School in Tarneit, Slovak Social Club in Laverton, and the St Matthews Slovak Lutheran Congregation.

As a Christian, Ive always believed its important to help my fellow man, he said. My philosophy is you cant just take all the time; you have to give back as well.

With two sons and ve grandchildren, Mr Belani, 80, still counts his lucky stars that he followed his heart.

I thank God he brought us to this lucky country. I think if I can make it here anybody can, he said.

On Australia Day, as the rst female chair of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the road transport industry through policies and regulations which promote a safe and responsible trucking sector.

Im honoured and proud of what Ive achieved in my career, Mrs Williams said.

Originally from a nancial services background in Adelaide, Mrs Williams started working in the trucking industry in the 1990s.

She was elected to the ATA board in 1999 and served three years as chairwoman.

Ive always been a passionate advocate of better working conditions for drivers. eyre the ones doing the hard yards for what is a very important industry, she said.

e statistics show signicant improve- ments when it comes to road safety and heavy vehicles.

Outside the trucking industry, Mrs Williams is a board member of Concern Australia, a Christian welfare organisation supporting marginalised and disadvantaged children.

One of its programs is for teenagers who have dropped out of school.

Its a pre-apprenticeship in mechanics and spray painting, she said. Most of these kids, who had no hope, now have a future. ats very rewarding.

If youre a woman new to cycling or just want to learn the basics of bicycle maintenance, a new program giving Wyndham women the skills they need to take to the road with condence could be just the thing.

Led by professional, accredited cycling coaches from Wheel Women, the free six-week course will cover everything from road rules, bicycle gears and riding in groups to xing a loose chain, changing a tyre and repairing a puncture.

A helmet will be given to all participants in the course, which is supported by Manor Lakes Cycling Group, Victoria University and Wyndham council.

Organiser Mark England, of Manor Lakes Cycling Group, said the program was about empowering women.

Its designed for both novice riders and those with some experience but who are not sure about getting on the road, he said.

e aim is to help build their condence and also leadership skills so they can eventually start leading organised rides of their own.

Whats your connection to the local community?I grew up in Hoppers Crossing and have been involved in swimming in the area for most of my life. I started swimming at Werribee swimming club at age eight in the outdoor pool and spent 20 hours a week training there as a teenager. Ive been a swim coach since age 16 for Wyndham City swimming club, previously Werribee swimming club and director of the club for nine years. I enjoy working with kids and helping them to improve their swimming and achieve their goals. I coach kids aged 13 and up, including six swimmers who qualied for the Olympic Games trials in 2012. I also help design training programs for young swimmers, including those swimming for fun and tness and the competitive ones.

Im a primary school teacher too and spent six years teaching at Seabrook Primary School in Point Cook.

What do you like about Wyndham?Wyndham is very multicultural and the diverse mix of people, old and new, make for a good community. I coach swimmers from a variety of backgrounds and they always have lots of dierent stories to share.

Federation Trail and Skeleton Creek trail are great for walking or riding in the area.

What would you like to see change in the area? Its dicult to get in and out of Wyndham. We need the infrastructure to support the growing community, to keep everyone connected, including better access to public transport.
