but how?
With over 50 competitive events, we understand the choice can be overwhelming. Hopefully the following four tips will help.
1. pick your competitive cluster
Our competitions are built around six academic clusters: 1. Business Management + Administration 2. Communication + Technology 3. Entrepreneurship 4. Finance + Accounting 5. Hospitality + Tourism 6. Marketing + Sales.
Each of these clusters break down into subcategories which your competition will be focused on specifically.
2. select your competitive event type
There are three; Business Simulations, Case Studies and Prepared Simulations. Consider all three thoroughly with your skill sets and comfort level in mind. For example, do you enjoy thinking on your feet, or are you more comfortable having a speech memorized? Some events require a test, are you okay with that? Do you like to fly solo, or prefer being on a team? With that in mind…
3. select your subcategory
Now that you have your ideal event and cluster in mind, simply select the subcategory that matches both. Don’t be afraid to switch either, the right fit for you is the goal.
4. prepare
Luckily you’re not on your own. We are here to help you succeed at both State and International Competitions. We will help you get ready through role-playing, discussions, tools, strategy, and other resources. Never hesitate to ask for help.

what they are Business Simulations are designed to measure a broad range of knowledge, skills and attitudes, both general business/marketing/management and industry-specific, identified by business and industry professionals as essential to success in a given occupation.
event format
what participants are judged on • On the bottom left corner of the front page of your Business Simulation is a list of
“Performance Indicators.” • Performance Indicators are the only things your judges can use to evaluate you. • Address each indicator point-by-point. Do not stray off topic by offering solutions that
do not address the specified Performance Indicators.
what tools can you have/not have? • No outside materials may be brought into competition • Only pen, pencil, calculator, and paper will be allowed in the preparation area. • Use that paper to present your solution in an organized format. • Draw charts, graphs and illustrations to provide further proof for your argument. • Use the facts given, and if you need other facts - make them up and act as if they are
given. If you tell your judge that your company has 60% of the market share, who are they to challenge that fact?

what they are Collegiate DECA’s Prepared Business Presentations provide students the opportunity to prepare ahead of time a written prospectus and/or to present to a professional (judge) with experience in the area of specialty identified for the event.
event format (may or may not include the following)
what participants are judged on • Every Prepared Business Presentation in the Collegiate DECA Guide gives you the exact
evaluation form that your judge will use. • Find it. Memorize it. Craft your presentation to match that form.
what tools can you have/not have? • Outside materials including laptop computers, reference materials, audio and visual aids,
etc. may be brought into the competitive event. • Play to your strengths: if you are a media guru, film your own commercial and play it as
part of your presentation. Whatever you do, be creative, unique and memorable. • You control the situation. You tell the judge what role they will play and what decision
they need to make; use this to your advantage and set-up the situation so that they have to love everything you say.
• Read through the guidelines carefully so that you are prepared for all possible questions and concerns from the judges.
• Practice, practice and then practice some more. You should be so well prepared that you can deliver a high-quality presentation in your sleep.
