Welcome to the second edition of the University of Southampton Lifelong Learning Magazine.
Asusualwehaveagreatselectionofcoursestoenrichandentertainyou.

Course DescriptionThiscourseprovidesyouwiththeopportunitytopreparefortheInternationalEnglishLanguageTestingSystem(IELTS)examinationbyanalysingandpractisingtheIELTSskillspapers.Duringthecourseyouwillbegivenadvice,guidanceandpracticeforallfourskills–Reading,Writing,SpeakingandListening.Attheendofthecourseyouwillbeofferedtestpracticeunderexamconditionsforwhichyouwillreceiveindividualfeedbackfromexperiencedtutors.
ThecourserunspriortoIELTSexaminationdateshereattheUniversityofSouthampton.ItissuitableforpeoplewhowanttotaketheIELTSforprofessional,immigrationorgeneralinterestpurposes.TotakethecourseyoushouldhaveatleastanintermediatelevelofEnglish.ThiscourseisnotsuitableforbeginnersorelementarylevelusersofEnglish.

What benefits does a class on climate change offer? Why is it such an interesting topic to study?
Climatechangetouchesallacademicdisciplinesandrunslikeathreadthrougheverythinginourlife,oftenwithoutusevennoticing.Climatechangeisnot‘only’aninterdisciplinaryscientificproblemtounderstand.Itiscrucialtobeawarethatitisalsoapolitical,economic,social,psychologicalandlegalissue(tonameafew).ThismakestheUnderstandingClimateChangeclassatruejourneythroughtheacademicworldandanincrediblyversatiletopictostudy.

StartwithwatchingtherecentDavidAttenboroughBBCdocumentary,‘ClimateChange-TheFacts’,andthentakeitfromthere.Thiswillopenyoureyesandyouwillprobablybemuchmoreawareofanymediacoverageorfilm-footageaboutclimatechangeafterthat.Oneproblemaboutclimatechangeisthatithasbeeninthenewssincethe1980sandpeoplehavebecomenumbtoit,theydon’tpayattentiontojustanotherreportaboutclimatechangeanymore.Onceyoure-sensitiseyourself,you’llbeamazedhowmuchinformationisofferedtoyou.

Ihavelearntsomuchinashortspaceoftime.Thequalityofteachinghasbeenexcellent.Thetutorisexcellentatcomingupwithactivitiestomaketheclassroommorefunandinteractive.Heruseoftechnologyisexcellentandshemixesitwithavarietyoflistening,speaking,writingandteaching,whichkeepsthepacegoingthroughoutthelesson.Firstclass.
Mostofallitisthesatisfactionoflearningsomethingnew.Pushingtheboundariesofyourknowledgeinawaythatyoucannotdobyreadingbooksathome.Itisaboutgettinggoodteachingbutalsoforlanguage,thechancetopractiseitinconversationswithothers.Itisentertaining,educationalandhopefullywillenablemetoenjoymorethetripsIoccasionallymaketoFrance.

IaminYear2oftheGreekLanguagecourse.IchoseGreekbecauseIamhalfGreek,onmymother’sside;andIwasashamedthatIcouldonlyjustaboutsurviveonholidayinGreecewhenorderingfoodandalcohol!!So,IthoughtIowedittomyheritagetodoabitbetterthanthatandmywifeboughtmethefirstcourseasabirthdaypresentwhenIretired.AswellasadeeperconnectiontomyrootsitwillbenicetobeabletochatalittletomysisterinGreek(sheemigratedthere45yearsago,marriedaGreekandnowlivesonSamos)andtoholdmoremeaningfulconversationswhenweareonholidayinGreece.It’salsogreattobeabletostretchmyagedbrain!

MynameisMarta,Iam25yearsoldandIcomefromabeautifulregionsituatedinthecentreofSpain.IamaqualifiedprimaryteacherwhodecidedtomovetoanothercountryasmanypeopledotoimprovemyEnglishskills,findnewopportunitiesandanewdirectionofmylife.Currently,IamworkingasaLive-inAu-pairandaLearningSupportAssistantinaPrimarySchoolinthecityofSouthampton.
SinceImovedtoEnglandIhavenotstoppedstudyingEnglishasIknowtheimportancethatthislanguagehasinmycurrentjobandtheimpactthatitwillhaveonmyfuture.
WhenIstartedmynewjobasaLearningSupportAssistantmystudytimewaslimitedthereforeIhadtolookforaneveningEnglish
coursethatsuitedme.ThatcoursewastheLifelonglearningcalled“EnglishforProfessionals”.AnotheraspecttoconsiderwasthepriceofthecoursewhichinmyopinionwasaffordableandwasoneofthefeaturesIwaslookingfor.
ForallthesereasonsIdecidedtojointhisEnglishcourse,withtheexpectationofbeingabletoimprovemycommunicationskillsandwritingskillsasitissuchanimportantthinginmycurrentjob.
ThebiggestdifferenceIhavenoticedthroughoutthiscourseishowmyconfidencewithlanguagehasgrown.Thisisaconfidencethatwillallowmetocommunicateinaneffectivewaywithpeopleofallkinds,inallsituations.
Alotofcoursesjustteachyougrammar,vocabulary,orotherpedagogicaltopics.Whathasbeenmosthelpfulfromthiscourseisthecontentaboutspokenlanguage,howEnglishisreallyusedbetweennativespeakers,andthequirksandsayingsthataresounfamiliartoastudentlearningthembutsecondnaturetothosethatusethem.Thiscoursehasdemystifiedahugeportionofthisforme…andInowevensliptheseinundertheradar.

Therearesomanygreatreasonstotakeacreativewritingcourse.First,it’snotalwayseasytofindthetimetowritecreatively.Enrollingonacourseoftenmakesyoufindthattime–remindsyouthatthisissomethingyouwanttodo.Then,weallwantourworktobeasgoodaspossible;learningfromapublishedwriterabouthowyoucanimproveyourworkisreallyhelpful.Finally,onedifficultpartofwritingisthatit’sdoneinaroom,byyourself.Bytakingacourse,yousuddenlyfindotherpeoplewhoaredoingthesamething–whoareascrazyaboutwritingasyouare.

AnIntroductiontotheHistoryofNuclearWeapons:FromWorldWartoColdWarThiscourseprovidesanintroductiontothehistoryofnuclearweapons,fromtheirinceptionduringWorldWarII,throughthenucleararmsraceandtheColdWar.Itmakesuseofarangeofprimarysourcesandhistoriography,givingyouanopportunitytoengagewithandanalysekeythemes.Itwillintroduceyoutokeydebatesrelatingtonuclearweapons,includingtheuseofthebombagainstJapaninAugustof1945,thefalloutdebatethatemergedduringthe1950sand1960s,andtheissueofnuclearproliferation.Eachsessionwillcoveradifferentaspectofthetopic,examplesof

UnderstandingClimateChangeClimatechangeisthemostcomplexandchallengingproblemthatwehaveconfrontedasacivilization.ArecentreportoftheIntergovernmentalPanelofClimateChange(IPCC)concludedthatGovernmentsaroundtheworldmusttake“rapid,far-reachingandunprecedentedchangesinallaspectsofsocietyquickly”toavoiddisastrouslevelsofglobalwarming.However,ourresponsesofarislessthansufficientandthegeneralawarenessandunderstandingofthisthreatremainsfarbelowwhatisneeded.Thiscourseisdesignedtogiveyouabetterunderstandingofthescientificbasisofclimaticchangeaswellasanunderstandingofwhyourcivilisationstrugglestoaddressthisproblemsufficiently.Wewillexploremultiplefacetsofthisinterdisciplinaryandall-encompassingfieldbylookingatthephysicalscienceoftheclimatesystem,the
