A sensor is a device that measures a physicalquantity and converts it into a signal which canbe read by an observer or by an instrument. For
accuracy, most sensors are calibrated againstknown standards.

A wireless sensor network (WSN) consists ofspatially distributed autonomous sensorscooperatively monitor physical or
environmental conditions, such astemperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants.

Sensor node. Also known as a mote. Theseusually consists of
a controller
one or more sensors
a transceiver an external memory a power source
A base station which acts as a gateway betweensensor nodes and end users.

Densely deployed inside the phenomenon.
Deployed very close to the phenomenon.
Position of sensor nodes need not be pre -determined or engineered.
They are deployed either of these ways ;

MIT d'Arbeloff Lab The ring sensor Monitors the physiological status of the wearer
and transmits the information to the medical
practitioner over the Internet.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory Nose-on-a-chip is a MEMS-based sensor
It can detect 400 species of gases and transmit
a signal indicating the level to a central controlstation

The system, designed by eProvenance, includes three physical components: asemi-active RFID-tag placed inside theshipping case to monitor and recordtemperatures and improve shippingand receiving operations throughoutthe distribution chain; a passive RFID-tag with a unique code attached to thebase of the bottle to automate trackingand inventory management, anddiscourage pilferage; and aproprietary, tamper-proof neck sealwith a covert code applied at the baseof the capsule to authenticate the wineinside the bottle.
A high-speed, encrypted, online
database links each unique bottle, caseand capsule, collecting identificationnumbers, along with authenticationdata from the chteau, shipment data, temperature records to create theelectronic pedigree for each bottle.

Smart environments represent the nextevolutionary development step in building ,utilities, industrial, home and transportation
systems automation. However to fully realizethe sensor networks, one needs to satisfy theconstraints introduced by the factors. Manyresearchers are currently engaged in
developing the technologies needed fordifferent layers of the sensor network protocolstack.
