WELCOME

Una is a district of Himachal Pradesh which lies in its south western part. On the 1st September,1972 the Himachal Pradesh Govt. reorganised the then Kangradistrict into three districts namely Una, Hamirpur andKangra.The famous historical/religious places of Una are ‘Chintpurni’ Goddess temple, Dera Baba BarbhagSingh, Dera Baba Rudru, Joggi Panga, Dharamshala Mahanta, Dhunsar Mahadev Temple Talmehra &Shivbari Temple Gagret. Una district is well developed in the industrial sector due to close proximity to Punjab. Mehatpur, Gagret, Tahliwal &Amb are the main industrial centres of Una. On 11th January 1991, Una has been provided with railway line by laying 14 Kms broad gauge track fromNangal(Punjab) to Una. In district Una, Punjabi, Hindi, Unnabi or Pahari are common languages spoken. In winter, the climate is cool, woolen clothes are required. During summer, the climate is hot, cotton clothes are required. From July to September, it is rainy & humid.

The District Una was selected under Draught Prone Area Programme (DPAP) in the year 1995-96 by the Deptt. of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India. Initially 16 micro watershed projects were sanctioned under DPAP-1st Batch to cover an area of 8000 hectares with a project cost of Rupees 320lacs. 7 more micro watershed projects were sanctioned under DPAP 2nd Batch in 1996-97. The total project cost of these projects was Rupees 140 lacs and targeted area 3500 hectares. All the 23 micro watershed projects under 1st & 2nd batch have been completed. 27 micro watershed projects were sanctioned under Employment Assurance Scheme(EAS) in the year 1997-98 with a total project cost of Rupees 513.28 lacs to cover an area of 12832 hectares. So far a sum of Rupees 454.19 lacs has been utilized on various dev. works covering an area of 11074 hectares. The projects are likely to be completed during the current financial year.

WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME UNDER DPAP AND EAS

The Govt. of India has sanctioned 40 micro watershed projects under DPAP-6th Batch during 2000-01. The total project cost of these projects is Rupees 1200 lacs and targeted area is 19964 hectares. So far a sum of Rupees 113.66 lacs has been spent on Training, Entry Point Activities and various development works covering an area of 998hectares.

During 2001-02 the GOI has sanctioned 20 more micro watershed projects under DPAP (7th Batch) to cover an area of 10000 hectares with a total project cost of Rupees 600 lacs. The identification of projects to be taken up has been finalized. Now works under Entry Point Activities are in progress and other development works will be taken up.

The Govt. of India has recently sanctioned 25 micro watershed projects under DPAP (8th Batch). The total cost of these projects would be Rs. 750 lakhs and an area of about 12500 hectares will be treated.

WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME UNDER DPAP AND EAS

(A) Community Organization/Entry Point Activity

Thirty classrooms in Govt. Primary/Middle/High/Senior Secondary schools, eleven community centers and seven village paths have been constructed. Renovation of Mahila Mandal Bhawan, community center Govt. Primary School and Panchayat Ghar has also been taken up.

(B) Land Development Activity

Staggered trenches in 10 hectares area, 102 rock filled dams, 38 live checks, 1 guide Bandh, Nallah treatment (2500 meters), 13 soil erosion checks (wire crates), 1 guide spur, 2 drainage channel have been provided for reclamation of fertile lands and to check further degradation of soil.

( C ) Water Harvesting Activity

Fifteen village ponds, 3 Irrigation channels, 17 Checks Dams,3 Irrigation tanks and 2 Bowries have been constructed to provide water for Irrigation and drinking purposes. Renovation for restoration of existing wells (Water Harvesting Structures) has also been carried out. The first ever twinHydram in District Una has been installed for demonstration purposes under Watershed Project Apramb functioning in Development Block Amb. The Water from Karluhi Rivulet (Khad) has been lifted upto height of about 26 Meters without any pumping cost to cover an area of about 2.88 Hectares. The yield for wheat crop has increased from 40 Kgs. per Kanalto 100 Kgs. per Kanal. The installation of this Hydram has proved a milestone in crop production. One irrigation Tank of 3.50 lakhs liters capacity has been constructed at Badoh in Development Block Gagret. The command area is about 30 Hects The total No. of families to be benefited is 32 out of which 12 belongs to SC.

(D) Agri/Hort./Afforestation/Pasture Development Activity

Horticultural plants like Mango, Papaya and Lemon have been distributed amongst farmers. The demonstration of wheat, Maize and vegetable crops was carried out to educate farmers to adopt scientific farming. The medicinal plants like Harad, Bahera, Amla and Neemhave also been planted. The roots of Napier Hybrid Bajra grass has been distributed and plants of Alsinia have been planted to meet out the requirement of fodder to the animal beings.

(E) Training Participants for five courses organized by H.P. Krishi Vishvavidyalay Palmpur and Horticulture and Forestry UniversitySolan were sent for training in Watershed management. The participants include BDOs JEs working in Development Blocks, Watershed Development Team Members, Chairman and secretaries of Watershed Projects. Thirty participants were also sent to HindSwaraj Trust, Raligaon Sidhi and BAIF Central Research Station,Uruli Kanchan (Pune) for imparting training. The training camps at Block level and Distt. Headquarter are being organised regularly to sensitize the people about the programme and to ensure people participation.

The fertile land of the farmers of village Kuneran in Dev. Block Gagret Tehsil Amb washed away during rainy season every year. A soil erosion check (wire crate) measuring 35 m length having size 1.25 m x 1.25 m was provided during 1998. About 7 hectares land has been reclaimed and farmers are now growing both kharif & rabi crops. They are very happy as not only fertile land has been reclaimed but further degradation has also stopped.

A cement concrete Check Dam across stream near Govt. High SchoolAttya in Gram Panchayat Ambehra Dheeraj has been constructed the total height of this Dam is 3.5 m and its span at top is about 10 m. The farmers of an area of about 5 hectares have been benefited and water is available for irrigation and animal population.

UNA•The first ever twin Hydram in District Una has been installed in village Paramb Tehsil Ambfor demonstration purpose. The total cost of civil work is Rupees 1.96 lacs. The water has been lifted to a height of about 26 m and there would be no pumping cost. It would cover an area of about 2.88 hectares ,the length of intake tank is 165m And capacity of intake and delivery tank is 9,600 and 24,000 liters respectively. The farmers have made field channels themselves and would maintain the Hydram equipment also. It has proved a milestone in crop production.

•A village pond of size 15m x 10 m x 2m has been constructed nearGovt. primary School upper Lamlehri. There was an acute shortage of drinking water for human and animal population. With the introduction of this pond the water is available for drinking and irrigation purpose

•A class room of size 6m x 4.25m having 2.95m wide verandah in Govt. primary School Badoh has been constructed under entry point Activity. There was shortage of class rooms in GPS Badoh and students had to sit in open during all the seasons. Now the teachers, parents and students are happy as they are teaching and studying in a healthy atmosphere.
