• Adding a System Design (Cont.)– In the Choose Layout Technology dialog box, select

MS-RT duroid 5880(Er-2.20) 0.010 inch, 0.5 oz copper– Click the Open button.– A new, empty schematic opens in the Ansoft Designer schematic editor.

• Technology File– A technology file initializes a design with a

set of data to avoid repeated entry of commonly used information. This data consists of layers and stackup information for layout, configured libraries of components, and substrate definition(s) for circuit analysis.

– Users and foundries can customize Technology Files for their own manufacturing processes and simulation models.

• Component Placement Method– To place components in general, you can either:

• Double click its icon, move your mouse cursor to the schematic window and left click where you want it• OR select, drag and drop a component in the schematic• OR right click its icon, select Place Component, move mouse cursor to the schematic and left click where you

want it• Note: As you move the mouse cursor to the schematic window, you will see that the cursor is accompanied by

the symbol of the component you choose to place. Before placing the component, use the R key to rotate. If a component is already placed, select it and use the CTRL-R key to rotate.

• You can continue to place more components of the same type by further clicking. To stop placing, hit the ESCkey.

• Go to the next page to begin placing components.

• Budget Analysis Domain– Budget analysis displays a system response such as Noise Figure (NF) or Output Power (PO2) as a function of

components in the system. • First we’ll display Noise Figure (NF) through the Receiver

– Right click on the Results folder; select Create Standard Report > Rectangular Plot

• Report Dialog – Select Domain: Budget (upper left corner of the dialog)– Category: click on Noise – Quantity: select NF(format=cum)– Function: dB– Click: New Report– Click Done

• A Budget plot of NF vs Receiver components – In the main menu select Window>Tile Horizontally

• Notice system NF increases through the system (left to right)– Click anywhere on the plot to Highlight the plot window– In the main menu select Report 2D>Accumulate

• Accumulate will display multiple traces resulting from multiple analyses

– Double click on the 2nd Amp (on the right) and increase NF to 6dB

– Re-analyze: in the Project Mgr right click on cwtone in the Analysis folder and click Analyze cwtone

– The new NF data resulting from the increased NF in the 2nd Amp will be displayed

• A Budget plot of Power Output vs Receiver components – In the main menu select Window>Tile Horizontally

• Notice on the Budget plot from left to right that the System Power Output increases through the first Amp then decreases through the Attenuator and Mixer and then increases again through the final Amp. We’ll experiment again with the 2nd Amp to increase it’s gain and hopefully increase the overall Power Output.

– Click anywhere on the plot to Highlight the plot window– In the main menu select Report 2D>Accumulate– Double click on the 2nd Amp (on the right) and increase MS21 to 20dB– Re-analyze: Right click on cwtone in the Analysis folder and click Analyze cwtone– The new Power Output is displayed

• Notice that Power Output only increases by ~1dB even though we increased the small signal gain (MS21) by 10dB. This is due to the fact that the Amp is saturated.

• Double click on the Amp again and increase P1DB to 20dBm • Re-analyze• Notice now that the System Power Output has increased a lot since the Amp is no longer saturated. • Keep in mind that component properties such as Input and Output Return Loss of the Amps, Conversion Gain of the Mixer, and

Saturation characteristics of the Amps will all effect overall System results such as Noise Figure and Power Output.
