Legal Requirements and DutiesA Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) is a legaldocument required under the UK regulations. It isintended to assess the whole of the pressure system andidentify the critical components together with the scope,procedure and frequency of examination to be carriedout by the competent person. A WSE must be providedby the user to a competent person prior to placing thepressure system into service and at the commencementof any subsequent examination.

Who is affected by these Regulations?Users and owners of pressure systems such as; airreceivers, café boilers, steam generating plant andassociated pipework, installed gas systems andpressurised hot water boilers etc will all be required to ensure that a WSE has been put in place before placing these items into service.

Provision of WSEAllianz Engineering is accredited by the United KingdomAccreditation Service to produce and certify WSE inaccordance with the requirements of the UK regulations.They are electronically held for all Allianz EngineeringInspection Policyholders and also provided in hard copy format. Electronic storage and viewing allows both the user and the competent person continuousaccess to the documents removing the practicaldifficulties of holding and providing WSE on site at the time of the examination.

Review of Written SchemesA WSE must remain suitable for the pressure system towhich it relates. A WSE will usually require a PeriodicReview between 3 to 5 years depending on thecomplexity of the pressure system.

Combined Report and Written SchemeAllianz Engineering can provide a combined report andWSE for single item minor pressure systems such as airreceivers and café boilers. These can be provided free ofcharge as part of an Allianz Engineering Inspection Policyand will remain valid for the period of the policy as theyare reviewed at every examination.

How Allianz Engineering can help youThe normal inspection premium covers the regularstatutory inspection and report, but does not coveradditional services such as provision of Written Schemeof Examination (except for the above Combined WrittenScheme and Report). In the event that you requirefurther technical information or need to obtain a cost for producing or reviewing a Written Scheme ofExamination then please contact Allianz EngineeringSpecial Services.

The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 require all owners and usersof pressure systems, operating above 0.5 bar or containing steam, to put inplace a risk assessment and a Written Scheme of Examination.
