THEME

Definition of Theme1. It’s what the story reveals about

people and life.2. A discovery of a truth about our own

existence.3. Theme is what a story is REALLY

about. 4. It is the meaning or lesson you take

away from the story.

Where does it say what the theme is?

• The author does NOT state it directly.

• The author wants you to DISCOVER it yourself as you read.

To help you identify the theme of a story:

1. How has the main character changed over the course of the story?

2. What has the main character discovered?

3. Which scenes are important?

4. What ideas about life do they suggest?

5. What is the story’s title?

Thesis Statement• A sentence with a subject and

opinion (also called commentary).

• This sentence is USUALLY the last sentence in the introduction paragraph.

Example Intro for Monsters

Fear is a powerful emotion. It can make you do things that you would not normally do. In “Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”, by Rod Serling, fear causes Charlie to behave in an irrational way.

Sample Intro Rikki

Anyone can be a hero. You don’t have to be big, strong, and powerful. In “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, Rikki proves that heroism can come in very small packages.

Non-fiction Response to Lit essay

• Using “The President Has Been Shot” by Justin O’Neil, write a four paragraph essay describing how President Kennedy changed America.

• Identify:

• The Subject of the article. (JFK)

• The Theme of the article. (impact on America)

• Pick character traits for JFK

• Pick 1 CD (evidence straight from the text) to prove that character trait.

• Today:• Create a t-chart with CDs and CMs. Write a topic

sentence.• With your partner, decide on two different character

traits for JFK.• Each of you will write your own one-chunk paragraph

for your trait.• Tomorrow:• Together, share each other’s one-chunk paragraph, and

write an introduction and conclusion paragraph.• Monday: edit and proofread• Tuesday: enter in MyAccess for a score.
