What is considered ethical in informational writing?

Hook:

Discuss ethics using Tagxedo .

Show students video on Plagiarism.

1. Teach students about ethics and plagiarism and explain the importance of knowing

the terms when creating informational writing.

2. Students will be placed into groups and within each group, they will develop a skit to

demonstrate plagiarism and how it can be avoided. Ultimately, they must develop a

problem dealing with plagiarism and then solve the problem.

3. After students create their skits, they will video record their skit using a digital camera

and upload them to the teacher’s computer. Once the teacher has uploaded all of the

skits to her computer, she will play them and the class will discuss what they have

learned.

Lesson 1 Assessment

Page 2: Writing Ethics

Students will be assessed by finding no more than a paragraph of information online

about their favorite animal and typing it up in “their own words” then submitting it to me

via email. After that, I will take each students’ information they sent and during class go

through using anonymous for all students work, and show students how much of their

simple paragraph of information was plagiarized using the TurnitIn report online. This

will show how much they learned about ethics and plagiarism.

Students will also be assessed by each making a post to the class blog site ( Using

Classblogmeigster) explaining what they learned from the lesson and how it will be

useful for them when researching information for their informational writing paper.

Lesson 1 Activities

Explain to students that ethics are morals that manage a person/group’s behavior.

Ask students….

How are ethics useful???

What is plagiarism???

What are the consequences of plagiarism???

*** Students will talk to each other and discuss the consequences of plagiarism and

then we will discuss as a class.

What is the purpose of informational writing???

How do gather information before beginning your informational writing???

Activity:

Students will choose a plant/animal habitat and after researching using any digital

device (iPod, iPad, laptop, desktop, or cell phone), write an informational piece on the

habitat they chose. Once students have completed their informational paper, they will

type up their paper and submit it to the class Google drive.

Assessment

Once every student has submitted and shared their papers to the drive, I will have

students get online and peer edit each other’s paper. (which is a part of the writing

process) after that, students will create a final draft of their paper to be submitted to the

class blog site in the appropriate section.
