A thousand words?
Dallas, TX -- Tracey Nolan lost track of her seven-month-old son, A'Mahd MaGee, when she was forced to leave for Dallas. A'Mahd had been visiting with a family friend when the storm hit New Orleans, and floodwaters prevented Ms. Nolan from reaching her child before she had to be evacuated by helicopter on August 30th. A thousand words?
Refers to the idea that complex stories can be told with
just a single still image, or that an image may be more
influential than a substantial amount of text.
However …
Photo cutlines are often the first and most read element of newspapers, magazines and “new media”
13I n t e g r i t y - S e r v i c e - E x c e l l e n c e
Tell the story behind the photograph Be short and clear Influence picture meaning
Point out subtleties not apparent to casual viewer
Prevent reader misunderstanding Complement the text by relating to
nonvisual senses Explain technical information/special
effects Reinforce the message effect Start with the photographer
A cutline should …
14I n t e g r i t y - S e r v i c e - E x c e l l e n c e
State the obvious Raise more questions than answers Change the original message Speculate about subject
feelings/thoughts Include fiction Overlook the mood of the photo Be an afterthought
A cutline should not …
