TRANSCRIPT
• This week KS2 will be writing a detailed book review of a fiction (story) book.
• Children will spend time writing different sections of the review throughout the week.
• Children may present their work in any format they’d like. We would like work to be able to go on display in the school library in September. Year 3, please email work to [email protected] and Years 4-6, please email your work to [email protected] and have the subject: Home Learning Book Review.
Why would we write book reviews?
•To share our opinion of books•To recommend a book that we liked •To encourage others to read
What do we include in a book review?
• Plan your review by working through the next few slides. Do these one at a time to cover all the sections you may wish to include for your own detailed book review.
• Section A must be included.• Do as many sections as you can from Section B.
A. The basic bits…
• What is the title of the book?• Who is the author?• Who is the illustrator?• In which year was the book first published?• What is the genre of the book? (list all that apply)
Fiction Genre• Adventure• Fairy tale• Fantasy• Scary• Science Fiction• Mystery• Other?_______________
B. Your bit…• For this section, you will have to have read the book.• Some of this section will be fact but your opinion is important too as
that will persuade others to read the book! Work through each section and do as many as you can.
This section may include:
1. Your recommendation
2. The plot
3. The setting and atmosphere
4. The characters
5. Highlights
6. Themes
7. Any weak bits?
8. Unputdownable?
9. Pictures
1. Your Recommendation:
• Who would you recommend this book to and why?• How many stars would you give it?
• Who would you recommend this book to? Why? I would recommend this book to _____ because ____________. ● What is your
• favourite part of the book? Why? ● What is your least favourite part of the book? Why?
Short WAGOLL based on Harry Potter:I think that anyone who likes fantasy books would love this 5 STAR book! I believe that this book will entertain you as it has action, drama and suspense. This is one of the best books I've ever read! I think that an incredible amount of people should read it but it’s best for ages 9 and over!
2. The Plot (what is the story about?)
• This is WHAT happens in the book. (Don’t give all the details away)• To help you think about the main events, first draw a time line (or a story map) with
the beginning scene of the book at the top of a piece of paper and the final scene at the bottom.
• For example, if you were reviewing Harry Potter,Write "Harry starts at Hogwarts" at the top and "Harry defeats Voldemort" at the bottom. Then fill in the main events of the story in between.
Short WAGOLL based on Harry Potter:This is the last book in the Harry Potter series. The ministry of magic has fallen and Dumbledore is dead. Harry, Ron and Hermione are on the run from the death eaters. But no matter where they run they always get caught and have to flee. When they get caught by the Malfoys’ and Voldemort comes, it is an epic battle between death eaters and Hogwarts's wizards.
3. The setting and atmosphere
•Where does this story take place?•Describe the setting•Describe the mood of the book•Use descriptive language
4. The characters
This section should include:• The name of the main character and other characters that you find most
interesting. • The role of the character(s)• Adjectives to describe them.
Also consider:• What is their personality like?• How do the other characters feel about this character?• Include information about what the character does or says• How do you feel about the character?
For example:• Harry Potter• brave, schoolboy
wizard…
5. Highlights
This is where you describe your favourite part of the book. Was there a particular piece of action, description or characters' speech you really enjoyed?
6. Themes
•What themes (ideas) does the book come back to again and again?
Themes may include: -Courage-Justice-Family-Power-Greed-Freedom-Friendship-Self-esteem-Equality-Bullying
7. Any weak bits?(You may not feel there were any!)
• Were there any chapters where you found yourself wishing for some action to liven up the plot?
• Any unrealistic characters? • Any descriptions or chapters that you felt were rubbish?
8. Unputdownable?
• Did you grab the book whenever you had a spare moment? • Did you read it rather than play computer games or watching TV? • Or…did you read the first chapter before letting it gather dust on
your bookshelf (that means you did you not enjoy it)?
9. Pictures
• Draw/paint a picture or pictures from the book. This could be of the cover or a character (you may have to use the ‘ERIC’ skill of visualization from descriptions given in the text for this).
• You may even wish to create a model of a character or scene from Lego or junk modelling.
Now it’s your turn to write your book review.
• Use your plans to write up your book report.• We are looking for well presented work to go
on display in the library. • There are no rules on how to present your work
so be creative! There are some ideas for presentation on the last few slides.
• Section A (The Basic Bits…) must be at the start of your review but other than that, there is no particular order we’d like you to do Section B (Your Bits…)in.
• There is a WAGOLL in 2 slides time!• Ask an adult to email your book review to
school (see slide 2).

HolesWritten by Louis SacharFirst published 7 May 2015Book Review by Phoebe C. (age 11)
Stanley Yelnats has never been very lucky. That's because he is under a curse, a curse that started with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather. Stanley is unjustly accused of stealing! He is sent to Camp Green Lake, where there is a dried up lake, and a myriad of holes. Stanley is forced to dig holes to build character. The holes must be five feet wide, and five feet deep.
Soon, Stanley realizes that he is not digging holes to improve his character. Someone is looking for something, hidden somewhere in the dry expanse that was once a sea-green lake. Then, something happens to his best friend, and Stanley ends up on the most dangerous and amazing journey of his life.
I loved this book. It had adventure, friendship and comedy. I think that both boys and girls would like it, because it's about a lot of different characters. My favorite characters were Kate Barlow and Zero Zeroni. Kate Barlow was a brave woman with opinions of her own and the love of Onion Sam to keep her dreams alive. Zero was one of the boys at Camp Green Lake. He hardly ever spoke, so everyone thought he was stupid. He was really very smart, and turned out to be a great friend.
When I read this book, I felt many different emotions. Sometimes I laughed, and other times I cried, and every once in a while I squeaked like a mouse, scared or excited for the characters as if I were right there with them.
When I started reading it, I couldn't stop, and my mom had to pry it out of my hands. It really made me think... I realized how lucky I was, to have a mother and father, to have warm water, to have clean clothes, and especially to have the freedom to be friends with any person, regardless of their color, religion or gender. Wouldn't you be upset if you weren't allowed to have a friendship with someone, just because of the way they looked, or the religion they were, or the things they believed?
Some of the words in this book will never come out of my mind as long as I live. That's why "Holes" is such a good book.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, friendship and superstition. It has a curse, an unusual group of friends, and some fantastic characters. I think that anyone over 9 would like it. Holes is a great book!
