WRITING A RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Page 2: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Provides the context of the problem. This may be the justification for conducting the study that you propose or this may constitute some statements made by authorities concerning the topic of the research

Introductionexplains the macro description of the

study and cites situations or statement of authorities to explain why the study is being conducted

Page 3: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Background of the Study

This section provide ideas which caused the researcher to undergo this particular study. Also , the information on the setting like geographical location, cultural and demographic characteristics, political or economic information, depending on the focus of the study.

Page 4: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Statement of the Problem

Sets the direction of the inquiry, it is verbalization of the ”question” which the study proposes to answer. This divides into major/main problem and the minor/sub-problems and may be stated declaratively or interrogatively

There should be at least three specific questions in the Statement of the Problem

Page 5: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Conceptual Framework/Research Paradigm

Refers to the researcher’s concepts or ideas about his study, consisting of inputs, process and outputs of the study

Page 6: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Objective of the Study/Purpose of the Study

Specific Objective

Page 7: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Significance of the Study

Contribution of the proposed study either to a body of scientific knowledge , to practitioners in the area of the research or to any other group which will benefit from the results.

Page 8: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Scope and Limitations of the Study

Boundaries like geographic, population, time and variables

Weaknesses/shortcomings of the study perceived by the researcher

Chapter II : REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes applied researches as well as other researchers not included in the theoretical framework, but which have relation to the proposed study on the problem dimension

Organize accdg.to the variables The similarities and dissimilarities among

the works cited and the proposed research Organize into foreign and local

Page 11: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Related Literature

Consists of books, documents, articles which are closely related to the present study

The ideas of each author must be stated and after it is the surname of the author and the year of publication

Related Studies Ideas from the theses or

dissertations read and which have relations to the present study

The theses writer’s familyname must always be indicated after each idea and the year

Must also be categorized into foreign and local

Page 13: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Synthesis/ relevance of the review to the present study

Similarities and differences of the present study will be stated

Family names of writers must be stated together with the year when written

LIST OF TABLES/LIST OF FIGURES/APPENDICES

Table Page 1.1 Mean Scores….. 20

Page 25: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Table Entry

Center the table number and caption between the margin

Double the space from the table number to the caption

With captions longer than one line, make each succeeding line shorter and center it on the line above

A double line is used to indicate the beginning and the ending of the table

Page 26: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Center Headings Triple-space above centered

headings, and double space below. Capitalize the first letter of each word

except articles, conjunctions, and prepositions; underscore with a solid line.

If a heading is more than four inches long, use single-spaced inverted pyramid format.

Punctuate as a chapter title

Page 27: Writing a Research Proposal-revised

Side-Heading,Too Long to Put on One Line Leave a triple space above and double space

below free-standing side headings

Align with the left margin

Capitalize and punctuate the same as centered headings

If a side is more than 21/2 inches long,single-space with a two-space handing indention

Paragraph Heading

Paragraph Heading. Triple- space to paragraph headings, indent five spaces, and underscore with a solid line. Capitalize the first word and proper nouns and objectives only; end with a period and begin the text on the same line
