Foreshadowing

• Foreshadowing- It’s a warning or indication of a future event.

• Example of foreshadowing in the story:“‘Ivan is an incredibly strong fellow,’ remarked the general, ‘but he has the

misfortune to be deaf and dumb. A simple fellow, but, I’m afraid, like all his race, a bit of a savage.’”

“‘Is he Russian?’”

“‘He is a Cossack,’ said the general, and his smile showed red lips and pointed teeth. ‘So am I.’"

• The general states that Ivan is a bit of a savage, and then he says he is like Ivan, which means he's a bit of a savage, too. And at the end, he ends up being a savage because he likes to hunt people for fun (he doesn't want to grow bored). He thinks that the day he gets bored of hunting, his life will fall to pieces.

Symbolism

• Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.

• Example of symbolism in the story:

“The cry was pinched off short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea closed over his head.”

• Blood (red) is an example of symbolism because the word blood is repeated a couple of times throughout the story. The author could have used another word to describe the temperature of the water, but he described it as "blood-warm water". This may just represent General Zaroff’s bloody work on the island.

Imagery

• Imagery- visually descriptive or figurative language (metaphor or simile), especially in a literary work.

• Example of imagery in the story:

“‘He is a Cossack,’ said the general, and his smile showed red lips and pointed teeth.”

• We can visualize General Zaroff with his red lips and pointed teeth. We can also foreshadow that he is thirsty for blood. The fact that author Connell uses the word "red" to describe Zaroff’s lips, and then adds the part of his pointed teeth only makes us visualize General Zaroff as someone who is dangerous and ominous.
