Bettingjobs.com is the leading recruitment company for the i-gaming industry around the world. They had an in-house server that dealt with email for their 20 staff. However, there were several problems: it was approaching the end of its life and it was often too slow for comfort, especially for remote users.

Switching to Microsoft Exchange Online reduced the burden on the company’s in-house server and allowed remote users to get the full benefit of Exchange, including email, diaries and contacts, via Outlook, a web browser or their smartphone.

The benefits are clear: performance, reliability and cost savings. Remote users can get their email much faster. For a company that relies on email, Microsoft’s SLAs are a great reassurance. Finally, the switch allowed Bettingjobs.com to defer an expensive service upgrade.

Business Needs“Email is vital for our business,” says Jason Shears, office manager at specialist recruitment firm Bettingjobs.com. If it fails, even for a couple of hours, it can mean a lost placement and a disappointed candidate. “Anything we can do to make email faster, easier and more reliable is good.”

The problem was that email was NOT fast, easy or reliable. The company used an aging in-house server that was approaching obsolescence. Since it also ran the company’s recruitment database and acted as a conduit for remote access from offices round the world, it was getting too slow to be usable. Exchange’s features, including email, shared diaries and contacts.

The new system also replaced a number of POP3 email accounts, which some staff were using for subsidiary companies.

BenefitsBettingjobs.com can’t afford email problems and Microsoft Exchange Online solved several of them. The biggest benefit was the money it saved. It helped them avoid an expensive bandwidth increase and defer a costly server upgrade.

It made life easier for people who worked away from the office. For example, most of the company’s staff are on the road most of the time and they can use their smartphones and laptops to stay in touch. They can also send and receive emails late in the evening from home to stay in touch with customers in different time zones.

The company has offices in Malta, Singapore, Costa Rica and Gibraltar (where many of their clients are based). Now these users can connect quickly to Microsoft’s servers and avoid a slow, frustrating VPN connection to the company head office. The server is faster too, now that it doesn’t have to deal with email.

Availability is a less tangible, but equally important benefit. Microsoft provides a 99.9% uptime service level agreement, with enterprise-class security, backup and redundancy. If thieves stole the old server or it had a breakdown, business would cease, perhaps for days. Now, says Shears, “as long as we have an internet connection, we can carry on. We can move our office into McDonalds if we have to.” In short, says Spears, “We ended up spending less money and getting more flexibility and capability.”

“Thanks to Microsoft Exchange Online, we extended the life of our server for at least a year, postponing a £4,500 purchase, and avoid a £7,000-a-year leased line upgrade.”

Jason Shears, Office Manager, Bettingjobs.com

“Now we can use smartphones and laptops to get our email, even if we’re not in the office, and this makes the work much easier. It just goes smoothly now.”
