Write The Right Resume Resumes are more than just a piece of paper that has your work histo-

ry. Itt is your sales piece. A document that is supposed to create inter-

est and incent an employer to want to meet you and learn more.

Employers do not want a generic resume. They want a targeted re-

sume that shows them that you have the qualities they are looking for

in this particular position.

To write the right resume you need to review the job description for

your desired position in advance. A strategy to help you, is to highlight

or underline everything in the job description that the employer wants

you to have and make sure those qualities are on your resume. The

job description is your clue to what type of person they are looking for. Your resume should reflect the

relevant information for the employer to make a decision on whether they want to meet you and learn

more about you. USI Career Services has several options to help you write the right resume!

You can attend a workshop, look at examples of resumes and watch our tutorial video on “Building a Target-

ed Resume” on our website or make an appointment to meet with a Career Coordinator by calling 812-464-

Welcome Back Students! A note from the director of USI Career Services and Internships

We in USI Career Services and Internships hope you had an enjoyable and productive summer and are

ready to make great strides in your academic endeavors during the 2016 – 2017 year.

This is the first edition of our online newsletter, Career Connections, and we hope you will find it an excel-

lent resource for your career development. Career Connections will be published four times annually –

twice each fall and spring semester.

The staff in Career Services and Internships is dedicated to providing USI students and graduates with

assistance in preparing for and transitioning into the professional workforce. From assisting you with job

and internship search strategy to practicing and polishing your interviewing skills, we are focused on

providing resources you need to prepare for a successful and fulfilling career.

The Fall 2016 semester promises to be one of informative events with opportunities for you to network

with a wealth of employers while taking advantage of the career “coaching” services we provide through

the individual appointments we offer. Last year, we met with students over 1,400 times for individual

consultations regarding resume reviews, job and internship searches, and mock interviews. Also, remem-

ber to routinely check Eagle Career Launch, the online job and internship posting system for USI students

and graduates. You can browse through hundreds of opportunities if you are seeking a job or internship,

or planning to do so in the future.

Let’s look forward to a successful year as we continue to assist you with career development needs. Make

plans to attend our career events including CareerLink, our largest career fair on September 21rd, the

Health Professions Career Expo on October 17th, the Salary Negotiating Workshop on October 18th, and

numerous other events and workshops.

With proper planning, career fairs can provide the perfect venue for you to create a great first impression. There

will be many candidates vying for limited positions, and only a handful will stand out from the crowd. Be prepared

so that you are one of those.

Preparation should include:

Company Research, obtain a list of company attendees. There is a list of registered employers for

CareerLINK and the Health Professions Career Expo on our website. Visit the websites of compa-

nies you are interested in.

Clothing Preparation, first impressions begin the moment someone first lays eyes on you. Dress

neatly and professionally to impress.

Resume Writing, prepare a resume (printed on resume-grade paper) to hand out at the job fair. If

you need help, contact your Career Services coordinator at 812-464-1865.

Things to remember while you are at the fair:

Arrive Early, give yourself time to visit as many employers as possible. Maps of tables will be

provided when you arrive at the fair.

Shake Hands: coming and going, Reach out and give a firm handshake when approaching a re-

cruiter. Look directly in the eye (and smile) as you greet them. Shake hands again when leaving.

Questioning

Ask questions to initiate a conversation. You may ask what opportunities they have for someone

with your major and qualifications, or questions you may have for them after researching their

company. Try to have answers ready to questions you think the employers might ask you.

Brevity… be polite, direct, energetic and concise with your answers. Demonstrate good commu-

nication skills.

Close with enthusiasm! Tell them if you are interested in joining their company. Ask if you can

follow up by phone with them.

Follow Up! Get a business card or name from the recruiter. Tell them "Thank You" for their time

before you leave the event. Follow up with a thank-you note or email in which you state your

continued interest in their company.

Attitude is everything! Always convey a sense of professionalism. Remember, everyone there is

a potential job lead and you are in competition with many other students.

Plan Now for Career Fair Success

Did you know that the average interview lasts around 40 minutes, but about

30% of employers know within the first 90 seconds if they will hire that candi-

date?

Strong interview skills are a crucial skill in landing a job after college. Many

students have trouble in preparing for the questions and nerves associated

with job interviews, but USI Career Services & Internships now has the tools

to help you ace your next interview.

The Career Services website now includes InterviewStream, an interactive

way to improve your interview skills. Interview Stream offers students the

ability to practice their interview skills by taking both premade practice inter-

views and by creating their own interviews through the extensive database of

interview questions.

Via webcam, or camera phone on the mobile app, students can record their

answers to a variety of interview questions then watch their answers and

evaluate their interview abilities. By visually watching their interviews stu-

dents can see common mistakes they may make. This will help prepare them

for future interviews.

Interested in being an ambassador? The Career Services Ambas-

sador Organization is a group of individuals that serve as repre-

sentatives, recruiters, hosts and leaders promoting the services

and benefits of Career Services and Internships to all students.

Ambassadors offer workshops for students, assist with promoting

and working at all of our career service events such as employer

presentation panels and career fairs for our different majors.

An Ambassador must attend monthly meetings, work at least 2

hours of each career fair, one hour of any employer panels

presentations and lead at least one 60 minute workshop per

semester or serve on a committee that devotes at least 5 hours a

month.

Access Now Available Through myUSI USI students and alumni looking for a part-time or full-time job or internship have an

outstanding tool available for their use. Eagle Career Launch is our online job and intern-

ship posting system. Similar to Monster or Indeed, Eagle Career Launch has hundreds of

job postings and is available exclusively to USI students and recent graduates.

Employers looking to hire can post their openings on Eagle Career Launch. The listings

may be for the tristate area, or in some cases nationwide. The openings may be for part-

time jobs and internships to gain experience, or may be for full-time degree related posi-

tions.

Prior to the Fall semester, most student accounts will be automatically activated. If you

registered late or transferred, you may need to contact Career Services and Internships at

812-464-1865 to activate your account in Eagle Career Launch. We will need your full

name, student ID number, USI email address and user name and your phone number. You

will receive a welcome email with a link to login the first time and set your password.

We are excited to announce that as of this fall, after you login the first time, you will be

able to access your account through

means quicker access for you to jobs
