MIAMI MARLINS (34-46) RHP Tom Koehler (6-4, 3.66) at CHICAGO CUBS (42-35) RHP Jason Hammel (5-3, 2.92) WRIGLEY FIELD, CHICAGO, IL Friday, July 3, 2015 – 2:20 P.M. EDT FISH BITES The Marlins open a five-game road trip today with the first of three at Wrigley Field against the Cubs at 2:20 p.m. EDT. Right-hander Tom Koehler (6-4, 3.66) will climb the bump for the Marlins; he is 0-0, 4.76 (11.1 ip/ 6 er) in three career ap- pearances (two starts) against Chicago. The Cubs will call on righty Jason Hammel (5-3, 2.92), who is 2-3, 4.33 (43.2/21) in nine career appearances (seven starts) against the Fish. After this holiday weekend set in the Windy City, Miami will have an off-day Monday before a two-game set against the Red Sox in Boston (July 7-8). Miami is coming off a nine- game homestand (4-5) against the Cardinals (0-3), Dodgers (1-2), and Giants (3-0). VS. THE CUBS Miami begins a three-game holiday-weekend set at Wrigley Field against the Cubs today. The Marlins are 2-1 against the Cubbies this season, having won a three-game series in South Florida from June 1-3. Miami holds a slim 88-87 lead in the all-time series, while the Clubs are deadlocked, 45-45, at Wrigley Field, where the Fish have gone 9-7 since 2010. YESTERDAY The Marlins concluded a nine-game homestand by completing a three-game sweep of the Giants with a 5-4 victory. Jose Fernandez made a successful return from the disabled list, earning the win in his first game since May 9 of last sea- son. He tossed 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits (one home run), with six strikeouts. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Fernandez also sparked the offense with a lead-off home run. Later in the frame, Christian Yelich walked and Adeiny Hechavarria singled, and both came home on a three-run homer by Justin Bour that gave Miami a 5-3 lead. Miguel Rojas tied a career high with three hits, and Carter Capps had four strikeouts in 1.1 innings. MODERN HOME LIVING With yesterday’s victory at Marlins Park, Jose Fernandez tied the Modern Day record for consecutive home starts without a loss to begin a career. Fernandez is 13-0 with a 1.23 ERA (138.2 ip/19 er) in 21 career starts at home. The only other pitcher in the Modern Era to do that was David Palmer, who did not lose in his first 21 home starts for Montreal from 1979-1984. CLOSE SHAVES The Marlins have been very comfortable in the close quarters of the Friendly Confines in Club history. According to Stats LLC, Miami’s 18-7 (.720) record in one-run games all-time at Wrigley Field is the best mark of any road team in a series since 1993, ahead of San Diego’s 18-11 (.621) mark at Wrigley and Colorado’s 16-10 (.615) record at the Nation- als/Expos. THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT Miami and Chicago have depended on youth more than most Clubs in the Majors this season. The Marlins lead all of baseball with 75.7 percent of their hits (522 of 690) coming from players who are 27 or younger (as of July 3), while the Cubs rank fifth at 58.8 (377-of-641). Between them are Arizona (74.4), San Diego (63.0), and Philadelphia (61.3). SIGNS OF LIFE The Marlins have won three consecutive games for the first time since June 11-13, and have scored at least five runs in each game of the winning streak. It is just the third time this season that the Club has scored at least five runs in three- plus consecutive games, the first time since doing it in four straight from June 2-6. The first two games of that run came in wins against the Cubs to close out a three-game set at Marlins Park. The other occurrence was a three-game run from April 14-16. Also, Miami batters have struck out just 10 times over the last three games, the fewest of any three- game stretch this season. RISPY BUSINESS The Marlins are 6x22 (.273) with runners in scoring position during their three-game winning streak, with a triple and three home runs. That is as many hits as the Club had mustered with RISP in eight games prior to the winning streak (June 20- 28), when it batted just .105 (6x57) with RISP, had only two extra-base hits (double, home run), and a 2-6 record. Miami ranks second-to-last in the National League in average with RISP this season (.227), ahead of only Cincinnati (.211). TURNING A CORNER Christian Yelich is riding a five-game hitting streak and batted .440 (11x25) with a .563 on-base percentage on the homestand that ended yesterday. Since the beginning of that ‘stand on June 23, he ranks third in the Majors in average, behind only Gregor Blanco (.485) and Cesar Hernandez (.459), and ranks first in on-base percentage. Since the calendar turned to June, he is batting .296 (29x98) in 28 games, which ranks 13 th among NL outfielders, compared to .220 (27x123) in 32 games combined between April and May. HIT PARADE Dee Gordon, who is the current vote leader to start the All-Star Game among National League second basemen, is leading the Majors with 114 hits. He is closing in on the Club record for first-half hits, which is 117 by Juan Pierre (2003) and Hanley Ramirez (2007). According to Stats LLC, Gordon has the fifth-most singles (93) all-time by a second baseman prior to the All-Star break, behind Florida’s Luis Castillo (103 in 2002), the Cubs’ Glenn Beckert (101 in 1971), and Philadelphia’s Dave Cash in 1974 (97) and 1975 (96). ROOKIE IS CATCHING ON J.T. Realmuto is hitting .338 (24x71) over his last 19 games, with four doubles, a triple, a home run, and eight RBI. His current four-game hitting streak is tied for the longest of his career. Over the 19-game span (since June 3), he ranks 12 th in the National League in batting (min. 74 PA), first in the Majors among catchers, ahead of Buster Posey (.333), and second among all rookies, behind Maikel Franco (.342). According to Stats LLC, Realmuto has excelled when batting early in innings. He leads the NL (min. 60 PA) in average with no outs at .394 (28x71), tied with Troy Tu- lowitzki and ahead of the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo (.388/26x67). Realmuto also leads the NL with a .442 (19x43) batting average when leading off an inning (min. 40 PA). FANNING WITH FLAMES Carter Capps has recorded 42 strikeouts in 19 appearances this year, including four in 1.1 innings of work yesterday against the Giants. It was his fourth game this season with four-plus strikeouts, tied with Vidal Nuno for the most in the Majors by a reliever this season. His 17.18 so/9 ratio is the highest in the Majors among relief pitchers, ahead of Aroldis Chapman (15.73) and Andrew Miller (14.70). Capps’ average fastball velocity of 97.9 ranks fourth in the Majors, according to Fangraphs, behind Aroldis Chapman (99.6), Arquimedes Caminero (98.2), and Kelvin Herrera (97.9). Capps now ranks seventh in the NL in strikeouts by a reliever, while A.J. Ramos (45) ranks fourth. The Marlins’ bullpen is fourth in the Senior Circuit in strikeouts (250), behind Milwaukee (261), Philadelphia (260), and the Dodgers (253). MARLINS VS. The Marlins and Mets were in a scoreless showdown in 2000 as neither team could score a run through the first eight innings of play in Miami. In the bottom of the ninth, Der-rek Lee followed a Mike Lowell single with a two-run walk-off home run. Jesus Sanchez pitched 8.0 scoreless innings but did not re-ceive a decision.

Overall record on this date: 9-12

Tom Koehler is making his eighth start since a brief bullpen stint, where he made one 3.0 inning relief appearance against Atlanta on May 16, and will mark his 15th of season. He is coming off a 2014 season that saw him go 10-10 with a 3.81 ERA in 32 starts. Led entire staff in strikeouts with 153, while ranking second in ERA behind Henderson Alvarez’s 2.65 (min. 15 starts) and second in innings pitched (191.1) behind Nathan Eovaldi (199.2).

Owns sixth-best home ERA among qualifying Major League starters at 1.68 (48.1 ip/9 er), yet in seven road starts has ERA of 6.21 (37.2/26).

Is making third career start and fourth appearance against Chicago, with no record and a 4.76 ERA (11.1/6). Last faced Cubs on June 16, 2014 at Marlins Park, when he allowed four runs on five hits (one home run) while striking out five over 6.0 innings. Tonight will mark first start against a NL Central team this season and is looking to improve on lifetime 1-6 record and 6.52 ERA (59.1/43) in 14 games (10 starts) against Central.

After completing 7.0 full innings just once in first 10 starts of season, has gone exactly 7.0 in three of last four outings. Tossed season-high 7.1 frames in fourth start of season, April 25 vs. Washington.

On June 10 at Toronto, surrendered career-high tying three home runs, while striking out a season-high seven. Also allowed three home runs to Washington at Nationals Park on May 6.

Opened season going 2-3, 4.62 (39.0/20) in seven starts. Moved to bullpen and made just one appearance, on May 16 vs. Atlanta (3.0 ip, 2 h, 0 r). Returned to rotation after that outing and has gone 4-1, 3.07 (44.0/15) in seven starts since.
