A Message from your Principal

To the Wright Brothers PreK-8 Families: Greetings and welcome to Wright Brothers PreK-8 home of the mighty Pilots! We had a great 2014-15 school year in which we participated in and took advantage of some new opportunities that became available to us while continuing some long lasting relationships. We continued our partnership with Grace Christian Fellowship through their two after school tutoring/mentoring programs “Kids Rock” and “Whiz Kids” while continuing to work with “2J Supply” and “Becker Electric”, who had volunteers give up their lunch time once a week to come in and read with our Kindergarteners. The students and the adults who participated in these opportunities grew tremendously from this experience. We continued our work with Wright Patterson Air Force Base, in which 6

th grade students were afforded a 5 day adventure to STARBASE, while our 5

th

graders visited Rosemary’s Garden, Dorothy Lane Market and Dayton Racquet Club through a “Food and Wine” grant. The entire student body was involved in the Spring musical, “HONK Jr.” We accomplished this and much more while the state legislators increased the accountability measures for students and teachers with the addition of the PARCC and AIR assessments while refining the measures of the “Third Grade Reading Guarantee” and the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System (OTES) that had been put in play during the 13/14 school year. We believe that our school staff working together with families will create a dynamic team that will be able to assist our children in their academic, social and emotional growth. We are very excited about the new school year and the opportunity to serve you and your children. During the 15/16 school year, the district will continue working on improving student achievement by focusing on “Kindergarten Readiness”, “all students reading on grade level”, “closing the achievement gap between groups of students”, and “College and Career Readiness” in all of the schools in Dayton. We are committed to the mission of Dayton Public Schools, “Dayton Public Schools provides a high-quality education in a safe environment that prepares our students for success in school, work and life by providing a highly effective trained staff working each day with community resources.” In order to meet this goal, we need your support. We need our students here every day, on time, and ready to learn. This year the district has changed our bell schedule by five minutes; as the student day will be 7:25-1:55. Please make note of this change as it will impact drop off/pick up time as well breakfast time. We’re looking forward to an outstanding school year and want you to be a vital part of the Wright Brothers PreK-8 school family. A great deal of time has gone into the planning of various programs for the 2015-2016 school year and we encourage all students to become involved. Please feel free to visit and volunteer anytime. Your support of the school and its’ policies/procedures is greatly needed and appreciated. We hope the information in this handbook will provide you the necessary information about the expectations that have been put in place at Wright Brothers PreK-8. With your support, we will continue to make Wright Brothers a place where every student is successful. Sincerely, Shawna L. Welch

General Guidelines

Students who ride school buses or who are dropped off by their parents will enter the building

through door #1 which is in the front of the building off of Wright Avenue.

It is important to note that even though students will enter the building through this door parents

must drop their students off in the back loop off of Pleasant Avenue. This is important so

that we keep the bus loop free of cars, but most importantly so we DO NOT want to have

students crossing in front of buses.

ECE/ECIP students will enter through the building through door #9 which is located on Huffman

Avenue and go directly to their classroom.

Walkers will enter the building through door #6 which is located off of Huffman Avenue.

It is very important for the safety of students that ALL parents and students follow the

guidelines for dropping off and picking up students.

Bus riders – Dropped off Wright Avenue

Car Riders – Dropped off in the loop off of Pleasant Avenue

Walkers – Enter and exit the building through Huffman door #6

ECIP/ECE/ D Buses/ Day care – Enter and exit the through Huffman door#9

Students should not be left at school before 7:10 a.m. There is no supervision for early

arrivals.

The student day begins at 7:25a.m.

Any student arriving after 7:40a.m. must get a tardy slip from the attendance office.

The student day ends at 1:55p.m. Bus riders will catch their bus on Wright Avenue while

car riders will be picked up in the car loop off of Pleasant Avenue. All walkers will be

dismissed through the doors on the Huffman Avenue.

Parents picking up car riders should stay in their car and their child’s name will be called

when you arrive. This system only works if everyone follows the guidelines. We ask

that you pick your student up on time.

Early dismissal is permitted in the case of an emergency and doctor’s appointments only.

Early dismissal must be cleared through the office in writing and completed before

1:30p.m.

Students will only be released to persons listed on authorized “Pick-Up List”.

Students who are walkers needing an early dismissal must be picked up by a parent or

guardian.

Any change in regular dismissal routines for your child must be submitted in

writing. Please refer to the Alternate Transportation Form in the back of this book. We

will not pull students off of the bus once they are placed on it. Due to liability issues only

DPS bus riders will be permitted to ride DPS buses. Please complete early dismissals by

following the procedures outlined above.

The school playground is a place for recreation and enjoyment. The playground and

fields should be safe, orderly places where children can interact positively with each

other in a cooperative spirit.

Emergency Drills Guidelines Emergency drills include: fire, tornado, crisis, and evacuation are a regular part of our

school training. Getting students out of the building is our primary concern.

Teachers will review with students the procedures for leaving the building. When the

alarm sounds, students are to stop talking and listen for instructions from the teacher.

Talking is not permitted during any drill. In the case there is a crisis, instructions may

not be heard if talking is taking place.

Students will follow all hall procedures and listen to the direction of the adults in charge.

All alarms are honored whether intentional or false.

Student Health Guidelines

It is imperative that your child’s immunizations be kept up to date as recommended by

your family physician. Each student kindergarten through eighth grade is to be

immunized prior to the school year for original enrollees, or as soon as possible in the

case of a student transferring from another district.

Any student who does not comply with the immunization requirement will not be

permitted to continue in school until he or she is in compliance with the requirements.

The cost of the immunization shall be borne by the parent or guardian.

Medication prescribed by a physician for a student must be given to the school nurse.

Prescriptions over-the-counter medicine may not be in a student’s possession nor may

they be carried to school on the school bus.

Students entering the 7th

grade this school year will be required Tdap or Td vaccine prior

to the start of the school year.

Becoming ill at school

If your child becomes ill at school, the student will be sent to the nurse. A parent or

guardian will be contacted.

It is extremely important to keep all contact information current. Care of School Issued Materials

Textbooks will be issued to the students by the classroom teacher book room chair. A

record is kept of the book number and the condition of the book issued. Each student is

responsible for the proper care of the textbooks and learning materials. Any damaged or

lost book must be paid for by the student to whom the books were issued.

Materials must be carried by the students on a daily basis to every class.

Student Internet Guidelines

Students shall abide by the Dayton Public School’s Acceptable Use Policy as it relates to

computer use and access to the Internet. This would include any violation(s) as defined

in Level I, Level II, or Level III offenses. See the Student Guide to the Code of Conduct.

Parent Visitation Guidelines

Parent participation and support is encouraged.

Classroom observation and visitation are welcomed. This is a time to observe your

student, not to become a distraction or to discipline other children.

Parents will be asked to leave the building to use their cellphone during this time.

If you want a conference with your child’s teacher, you must schedule a time in advance

with the teacher, that is not during instructional time. Please do not come to the school

and expect to meet with the teacher during the school day unless it is during his/her

planning time.

Parents MUST SIGN IN at the main office BEFORE going to a classroom. The office

will notify the teacher of your arrival. This is in the interest of safety for all students.

Staff members’ and volunteers’ children will be expected to follow all of the expectations

of the building, including being in class and going through the metal detector.

Parents are encouraged to participate at Wright Brothers PreK-8 as volunteers or as

members of organizations which seek to maintain and improve the quality of education at

Wright Brothers PreK-8 and throughout the Dayton Public Schools district.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, contact your child’s teacher or the school

administrator.

Fieldtrip Guidelines

Field trips will be conducted under the guidelines of the Dayton Board of Education.

Students must have a signed registration and emergency medical forms with working

phone numbers on file in order to participate in fieldtrips.

Teachers will also send home a field trip information sheet for each field trip.

This sheet should be completed by the parent and returned by the date set by the

coordinating teacher.

Students who do not have Emergency Medical forms, updated phone number or the

returned information sheet will not be permitted to participate in the field trip.

Students who have demonstrated poor behavior choices in school may be excluded from

the field trip or a parent may be asked to chaperone the student.

Students who may behave poorly on a field trip will be excluded from future field trips.

Telephone Guidelines

In case of emergency call the main office at 542-5940.

Cell Phones may be carried by students but must be turned in at the office upon arrival at

the building. Neither the School nor the district has any responsibility for this item

should it become stolen or lost.

The cell phones will be picked up at the end of the school on the student’s way out of the

building. Teachers will not dismiss students early to pick up cell phones.

Classroom phones are to be set to voice mail during instructional time.

Students may use school phones with permission from a teacher or staff member.

9

Parents driving students to school

Traffic before and after school is potentially very dangerous. Please drive carefully at all

times.

Parents must exit their vehicle and come inside the building to pick up their children for

early dismissal.

Parents need to model good, safe practices and expect their students to do the same.

Dropping students off in the morning can be done safely in the back loop off of Pleasant

Avenue. Dropping off or picking up during this time does not require the parent to leave

their vehicle.

School bus rules

Students riding the school bus to and from school are expected to demonstrate the same

behavior expected at school. Students who fail to cooperate with bus drivers or who fail

to comply with basic safety regulations may be denied the privilege of bus transportation

and are subject to disciplinary action.

Bus riders must:

Load and unload from their bus at the designated stop in orderly fashion.

Ride assigned bus and unload at regular stop, unless the principal signs a note

to give the driver directions stating otherwise.

Refrain from eating and littering on the bus.

Keep noise to a minimum. Students may talk quietly to the person beside them,

if the driver permits.

Be absolutely quiet at places of danger as specified by the driver.

Refrain from use of abusive language at all times.

Remain in the same seat while the bus is in motion.

Refrain from throwing anything (inside or outside) while on the bus.

Refrain from hanging any object or parts of your body out of the bus window.

Cross the street at least ten feet in front of the bus.

When dismissed from school, go promptly to the bus.

Discipline

When discipline problems with individual students arise the following procedures should

be applied:

if possible, the driver should handle the problem.

when the driver is unable to solve the problem, he/she should report it to the

transportation supervisor. Then, the transportation supervisor and driver, if

necessary, will confer with the principal. The disciplinary disposition of the case

will be by the principal of the school.

situations which cannot be solved through the courses outlined above will be

referred to the Superintendent .
