ISSUE 1 APRIL 11th-12th, 2015

Following a hectic off-season, it’s good to welcome the start of the 2015 WRFL football season.Foundation club Parkside has experienced a roller-coaster ride on the back of a convincing win in the 2014 Division 2 Grand Final. Where their win should have led to promotion to

Division 1 in 2015, exodus of a majority of senior list players presented a real prospect of the club going into recess at best; or worse still, closing permanently. The WRFL Board’s decision to relegate them to Division 3 provides a lifeline that hopefully will allow Parkside Football Club to rebuild and thrive in the years ahead. While the fi xture change leaves a bye in the Division 1 draw, the unanimous support of all Division 1 and 3 club Presidents for the move speaks volumes for the spirit of community amongst WRFL clubs.Of course, Parkside is not the only club to feel the pressures and demands on volunteer administrators of maintaining healthy, viable clubs in a rapidly changing marketplace. One of the biggest cost pressures in community football is the expectation of payment to senior players; and the often over-commitment to those payments by club offi cials striving to compete for the best players. AFL Victoria is on the verge of releasing a draft equalisation package of regulations aimed to contain player payments in future. The package will be trialled “in the background” through the 2015 season, with all club committees able to

assess the potential impacts and provide input to a fi nal set of regulations to apply Statewide from the start of the 2016 season. With the AFL Commission now recognising the growth corridor of Melbourne’s west and north-west as of equal importance nationally as South-East Queensland and greater western Sydney, AFL Victoria has increased its permanent development staff from two to fi ve Football Development Managers across those regions. Two of those managers, Tom Delahunty and Tony Nguyen are now permanently located in the WRFL offi ce at Whitten Oval, working closely with Tim Shellcot on strategies to increase participation through WRFL clubs and to provide targeted assistance to both new and established clubs. Despite all of the issues and off-fi eld distractions, the restructure of senior competition to three divisions during the 2014 season has proved to be an overwhelming success, providing more competitive environments in all three divisions. The 2015 season herald full implementation of the restructure, with promotion and relegation to apply between Divisions 2 and 3. With the junior football season scheduled to commence tomorrow, it is expected that around ten additional teams will take the fi eld this year – an encouraging sign for the future. At senior level, Wyndham Suns FC will fi eld Senior and Reserves teams for the fi rst time, as well as open their new clubrooms at Goddard Street Reserve with an offi cial function next Saturday. On behalf of President Bruce Mildenhall, the WRFL Board and staff, best wishes to all for an enjoyable and successful 2015 WRFL season.

WESTERN Region Football League must start again in its quest to be crowned AFL Victoria Metropolitan champions, after being handed a 34-point defeat by Eastern Football League at Ikon Park on March 28.

The Doggies threatened in the opening term but failed to capitalise.

A well-drilled Eastern side wrestled back momentum in the second quarter to make the WRFL pay.

WRFL coach Brett Jacobs made changes at half-time, switching Jayden Post to centre-half-forward and moving Murray Boyd into defence.

The move helped but was not a matchwinner despite reigning Barry Priest medallist Matthew Dean lifting across half-back in the third term to create some smart passages of play.

Jack Purton-Smith dominated on the ball, assisted by Wayde Skipper’s delivery in the ruck, while Andrew Panayi’s sharpshooting kept his side in the game.

But EFL proved too strong in the end, prevailing 13.10 (88) to 8.6 (54), with Matthew Aver named best on ground for the victors.

“We had high expectations but they were obviously a very accomplished side, well drilled and prepared really strong, so our boys played it out until the end, so we can’t ask for much more,” Jacobs said.

“I certainly felt we were the better side in the fi rst quarter and a half. We had a slender lead and I thought we should have been three, maybe four, goals in front.

“But we hadn’t put that scoreboard pressure on them, and once they got some momentum ... they were really hard to pull back.

“Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t but we’re really proud of the boys and the way they went about it.”

Vice-captain Matthew Ryan was voted the WRFL’s best ahead of Skipper, Purton-Smith and Macauley Goring.

“He’s an experienced player,” Jacobs said of Ryan.

“I thought he played a really experienced game across half back, chopped off a lot of their entries and rebounded for us. He was a good contributor.”

Jacobs said the commitment from the competition’s best players was fi rst-class.

“I couldn’t fault the playing group, it just wasn’t to be today but their buy-in from day one has been good, training’s been enjoyable,” he said.

“There were no excuses. We were well prepared, we were ready to play, it just didn’t go our way.”

The WRFL drops to fi fth spot with the loss, and will meet Southern Football League in next year’s championships.

Finishing in fourth and fi fth place last season and with one Good Friday win a piece, the annual WRFL Good Friday clash between St.Albans and Hoppers Crossing was earmarked to be one hell of a match. And it seems the two teams delivered just that, with a stunning fi ve goal last quarter effort by Hoppers Crossing seeing the visitors run home 19-point victors in the season opener at Kings Park Reserve. In perfect football conditions, the Warriors came out fi ring in the opening half, piling on 14 scoring shots to the Saints’ eight to go into the main break a goal in front. Yet the Saints wrestled back the lead in the third, making the most of Hoppers Crossing’s turnovers and boot three majors of its own.Despite going into the last term two goals down, the Warriors fought back momentum, with the aid of the breeze helping to capitalise on its 15 inside 50s and hold the Saints to just three behinds. The fi nal score St.Albans 9.8.62 to Hoppers Crossing 11.15.81.Hoppers Crossing coach Steve Kretiuk said that he was pleased his men responded to the challenge in the last term and made amends for their sloppy skills in the opening three-quarters. “We controlled the game for most of the day but our footy going forward was really poor and they really capitalised on some turnovers.“With such a young group last year, in the same position, I reckon we would’ve lost that game, so it’s good to see how far we’ve come because St Albans is a very good side and it was always going to be tough.”Jackson Viola, David Barbieri and Harley Armstrong-Weston were stand outs in the Warriors

defence, while big men Wayde Skipper and Daniel Riosa were instrumental in the centre square. St.Albans duo Michael Spooner and new recruit Anthony Piva combined for six goals, while Peter Dalinkiewicz, Mitch Bongiovanni and Brad Allen were among the best for the Saints. COACH’S CLIPBOARDTroy Beamond – Wyndhamvale FC

Wyndhamvale’s Senior Coach

Troy Beamond

Tell us a little bit about your playing days and coaching background?Played my entire career, from aged 8 at Geelong West St Peters in GFL.

Have had varying coaching roles at GWSP, Sebastopol, Ballarat FL Interleague, Werribee VFL and Portarlington. What made you get into coaching?Have always had a love of footy. Coached junior teams whilst playing, but after retiring young after too many injuries, it was a natural progression. Always loved the tactical side of the game.

What is your favourite training drill you give the team?Any drill that Chris Graham takes is always quality.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?Don’t bet on heavy tracks. And always be nice to the President and Secretary.

What is your coaching philosophy?Try to make it enjoyable, don’t over complicate things, and remember it is suburban footy and a hobby for players and offi cials.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?I try to keep it low key.

Which team are you looking forward to playing the most in 2015?Manor Lakes in Round One- Purely because after a long pre-season, every player and coach can’t wait for Round One.

Who is the most diffi cult opposition player to stop? They all can be dangerous. We respect all opponents, but we fear none.

What do want to achieve this season? We have some quality 17-23 year olds and I want to see them develop into consistent, competitive players and people.

What has been one of your proudest moments as a coach?Being given the chance to work with an Assistant Coaching team of Bunworth, Graham and O’Shea.

Who was your football idol growing up?Mark Elso was and still is.

If the players could describe you in three words, what do you think they would say?The Senior Coach.

17 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

Welcome to a new season of football. Like most of the local clubs, there have been many changes both on and off the fi eld for the WRFL umpires.

With a number of fresh faces pulling on the whites in 2015, there has been a lot of work behind the scenes with the newcomers in all three disciplines of fi eld, boundary and goal.

While it has been fantastic to see the development of new umpires, there has also been a few favourites depart the WRFL umpiring scene in 2015. This year we say farewell to fi eld umpire Brett Carter, veteran goal umpire Roly Caple, Alf Johnstone and Barry Webster. We wish them well for the future.

In other news, the WRFL umpires are delighted to report that fi ve of our umpires will step up to the next level in 2015. Following an arduous pre-season and trial period, Stefan Bjelosevic (fi eld), Lewis Spiker, Shannessy Adams, Patrick Galea (boundary) and Julian Ensink (goal) have all been rewarded with a spot in the various VFL Umpires Development Squads. These umpires will offi ciate in VFL Development League, TAC Cup and VWFL matches throughout the year. This means that 19 of our best and brightest umpires have made the step up in the last fi ve years, reinforcing the belief for young umpires that they too can make it to an elite level if they have the desire, ability and attitude.

The other very important change in local umpiring circles is the new umpires’ website. This is found at http://www.wrfl umpires.com.au/ and was created by fi eld umpire Christian Brenner. More about that next week but in the meantime make sure you spend some time checking it out.

Good luck to everyone for Season 2015 especially to those people who are taking their fi rst step onto our local grounds as fi eld, boundary and goal umpires for the very fi rst time. Here’s hoping that it is the start of a rewarding career.

LAWS OF THE GAME – QUIZ #1

Q: A player from Team A dives on top off the football and is grabbed correctly by an opposition player. The player in possession of the ball immediately punches the ball away. What happens next?

a) The fi eld umpire calls, “Play on.”

b) The fi eld umpire blows the whistle and awards a free kick to Team B for diving on the ball.

c) The fi eld umpire blows the whistle and awards a free kick to Team A for a push in the back.

Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week’s WRFL Footy Record.

UMPIRES CORNERBy Graeme Hodgart

In its third season this year, the WRFL is pleased to announce the continuation of the WRFL-Western Bulldogs

Heartland Award in 2015.

Each week throughout the home and away season, the Junior Heartland Award will be presented by the coach from the home team to one player from the opposition

side, who they believe embodies the true essence of the game- that being: fair play, fun, involvement, and respect

for both opposition and umpires.

This season we would also like to welcome former St. Bernard’s player Mitch Wallis to the Junior Heartland

Award as a fellow Ambassador with Western Bulldogs Vice-Captain Jordan Roughead.

Don’t forget to register your unique code at the bottom of your certificate on our website to go into the draw to win

The Ultimate Football experience at Whitten Oval.

The Heartland Award will kick off on Sunday April 12 for Round 1 of the junior fixture.

At Insurance4Footballers our goal is to educate players on what they receive from JLT Insurance through their league registration and the gap in the policy as well as provide the best

possible income protection for amateur footballers.

We are currently touring Victoria visiting clubs and educating their players about the importance of having the right personal insurance while playing football.

Through short 10 minute presentations we highlight the importance of extra personal insurance, especially if players:

Have a mortgage or loan

Are self employed

Have a young family

Or rely on their income for everyday living.

Our mission is to protect as many footballers and their families as possible, so that if a player is hurt and unable to work, Insurance4Footballers will be there to help along the way.

Visit our website for your free and instant online income insurance quote and check out our brand new mini-commercials with official ambassador Joel Selwood.
