Cornell is led by senior Travis Lee and juniorDustin Manotti. Lee, a three-time All-American and the2003 national champion, has won 42 consecutive dualmatches and is currently ranked second at 133 poundswith a 24-1 record. LAST YEAR VERSUS CORNELL: The Pride facedCornell twice last season, winning both times. The twoteams first met in Ithaca on January 10, 2004 with thePride posting an 18-15 victory. Six days later the two

teams met at the NWCA Duals with Hofstra squeezingout a 16-15 win.

THE WALKING WOUNDED: Injuries and illness havehit the Pride hard in recent weeks. The Pride wrestled lastweekend without senior Ricky LaForge and junior MikePatrovich, who sat out due to injuries. In addition, the fluhas hit several wrestlers during the past two weeks. ButHofstra is expected to field a full line-up today includingheavyweight Gian Villante, who will return from injuryfor the first time since December 4th.

REMEMBERING A HERO AND A FRIEND: ThePride wrestling program is proud to honor the memory ofFDNY Deputy Chief Ray Downey, an American hero anda friend of Hofstra, with the presentation of the RayDowney Memorial Scholarship this afternoon. ChiefDowney, who served as Chief of Special OperationsCommand, lost his life heroically during the terroristattacks at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.After his passing, the Downey family, longtimesupporters of Hofstra University and the Pride wrestlingprogram, created a scholarship fund to honor his memory.Funds contributed are used to endow scholarships inChief Downey's name and will provide financialassistance to the Hofstra University wrestling program.Recipients of these funds must demonstrate the integrity,work ethic, discipline and courage that Deputy ChiefRaymond Downey displayed throughout his life. The2005 recipients of the Chief Ray Downey ScholarshipAwards are senior Paul Siemon, junior Mike Patrovich,sophomore John Manarte and volunteer strength andconditioning coach Brad Christie.

USA TODAY/NWCA/INTERMATRANKINGS: The Hofstra Pride, aftertwo victories last weekend, held steadyat number 11 in the country in thisweek’s USA Today/NWCA NCAADivision I Wrestling Poll. Hofstradefeated #22 West Virginia and

unranked Old Dominion last weekend. Individually, sixHofstra wrestlers are ranked in the Top 20 in theirrespective weight classes. Senior Chris Skretkowicz (19-1) moved back into the number two spot in the country at197 pounds after a 2-0 weekend. Senior Ricky LaForgealso remained at number seven at 141 pounds this week.LaForge, who missed the two matches with an injury, is18-4 on the season. Junior Jon Masa, who went 2-0 overthe weekend, also did not move, remaining at numbernine at 149 pounds this week. Masa is 13-7 on the season.

Senior Paul Siemon, who is now 18-5 on the year withtwo wins over the weekend, remained at number 11 at174 pounds. Junior Mike Patrovich, who is 6-2 on theyear, slipped one spot to number 14 this week at 165pounds despite not wrestling over the weekend. FreshmanCharles Griffin moved back into the top 20 at 133 poundswith two wins and is now 20th. Griffin is now 19-3 on theyear.

Individually, six Hofstra wrestlers are ranked inthis week's W.I. N. Magazine individual rankings. SeniorChris Skretkowicz remains ranked second at 197 pounds.Junior Jon Masa at 149 and senior Ricky LaForge at 141also hold steady at eighth in their respective weightclasses. MASA AND GRIFFIN GET CAA AWARDS: Hofstrawrestlers Jon Masa and Charles Griffin each sharedColonial Athletic Association wrestling honors this week.Masa shared the CAA's Wrestler of the Week honors withDrexel University's Zach Makovsky while Griffin sharedthe CAA Rookie of the Week honors with Drexel's RyanHluschak. Masa, a junior 149-pounder from Long Beach,NY, pinned 18th ranked Mike Torriero from West Virginiain 4:44, and won a major decision (17-5) in a CAA dualagainst Hunter Davenport of Old Dominion. Currentlyranked ninth in the nation, Masa recorded his sixth pin ofthe season and improved to 13-7 overall. Griffin, afreshman 133-pounder from Reading, PA, won both of hisdecisions last week to improve to 19-3 overall and 11-1 induals. He won a major decision over B.J. Compton of OldDominion, the third ranked 133-pound wrestler in theCAA, and has now won five straight matches. He alsodefeated Seth Lisa of #22 West Virginia 9-2.

Siemon is now 78-35overall in his career...Senior Chris Skretkowicz won his125th career match with a 6-0 victory over MarcusSchontube of Penn on January 16th. Skretkowicz has won16 consecutive matches this season...Junior Jon Masatallied his 75th career victory in a match against Harvardon December 11th.

A BIG WEEK: The Pride will face four opponents in thenext nine days and five in the next 11 days. Hofstra willtravel to Drexel and Wagner next Saturday, February 12.The Pride will complete the trifecta on Sunday, February13 when they take on top-ranked Oklahoma State at 10a.m. at the Hofstra Arena. Hofstra has already wrestledagainst number two Lehigh and number three Nebraska.In addition the Pride has also wrestled against numberfour Michigan.

HOFSTRA CONTINUES CONFERENCE WINNINGSTREAK: The Pride extended their conference dualmatch undefeated streak to 38 with their win at OldDominion on January 30th. Hofstra, which lost its lastconference dual match in 1998-99, was 6-0-1 in 1999-2000, 6-0-0 in 2000-01, 6-0-0 in 2001-02, 7-0-0 in 2002-03, and 8-0-0 in 2003-04. The last time Hofstra dropped aconference dual match was on February 17, 1999 whenthe Broncs of Rider beat the Pride 28-10 in an East CoastWrestling Association (ECWA) match.

HOFSTRA FAVOREDAGAIN IN THE CAA: TheHofstra Pride are the preseasonfavorite to record their fifthconsecutive conferencechampionship in a vote of theColonial Athletic Association

coaches. The Pride, who have all 10 wrestlers ranked inthe CAA top six, accumulated 56 points in the preseasonpoll. Rider (38) and Drexel (34), each with 10 rankedwrestlers, placed second and third, respectively in thepoll. Boston and Sacred Heart round out the top half ofthe CAA preseason poll. Old Dominion, George Mason,Wagner, Campbell and James Madison complete thepreseason poll.

WEDDING BELLS: The Pride had some wedding bellsgo off during the holidays in December as assistant coachDonnie Pritzlaff married Robin Schrafnagel in Wisconsinon New Year's Eve. Meanwhile, 197-pound senior ChrisSkretkowicz popped the question to his future wife, Ms.Megan Yurchak. No date has been set for that wedding.
