Welsh Premier League Newsletter - Issue 39 - Season 2013-14TRANSCRIPT
PORT Talbot have confirmed that a winding-up
order has been served on the club by HMRC for
a non-payment of VAT/PAYE debt.
While the club is disappointed by the course of
action taken, it accepts its responsibilities.
The outstanding debt has arisen as a result of
poor cash flow in recent months due to the fact
the club has played only two home games since
December 26 because of adverse weather
conditions.
There have been a number of postponements in
recent weeks.
Club CEO Andrew Edwards said: “The
outstanding debt will be paid within the next
seven days.
“I’d like to reassure supporters that the directors
of the club are committed to safeguarding its
future and to resolving this situation as quickly
as possible.”
The club has made Corbett Sports Welsh
Premier League secretary Gwyn Derfel fully
aware of the situation.
Meanwhile, Chad Bond has left Port Talbot
Town for another stint in the United States, this
time with California-based side Sacramento
Republic FC.
They will make their debut in the USL Pro
League — football’s third tier in the country —
this season.
Bond came through the youth ranks at Swansea
and featured for the first team in the
Championship under Paulo Sousa.
Capped by Wales at Under-19 and semi-pro
levels, he first joined Port Talbot in the summer
of 2006 but was re-signed by the Swans when
Roberto Martinez became manager. >>>>>>>>

Airbus UK clinch
Euro place The three points gained from Friday night’s 2-1 win
against Rhyl took the Wing-makers to fifty-seven points,
a point more than the four clubs below them can achieve.
This guarantees second place and another adventure in
the UEFA Europa League next season.
Earlier this season they experienced their first venture on
the European trail when they were paired with FK
Ventspils of Latvia.
After a very creditable 0-0 result away in the first leg the
1-1 home draw meant their opponents progressed on
away goals.
At least they can take heart for the next campaign
knowing they start off unbeaten in Europe.
Boss Andy Preece can now focus on ensuring that they
get maximum points from their remaining matches.
He commented "We need to keep winning to keep the
pressure on TNS, because I do think they will drop
points.”
Bond remained on loan with the Steelmen until his recall
in January 2008 and, after further loan spells with
Spanish club CF Balaguer and Swedish outfit Ostersunds
FK, was released from the Liberty Stadium and signed
for Neath in August 2010.
After a season at the Gnoll he moved to Llanelli in July
2011, then joined Afan Lido on loan, before leaving to
play in the USA with LA Blues.
Bond returned to Wales and Port Talbot in January and
made five appearances from the bench, scoring once.
Port Talbot would like to wish Chad every success in the
future.

NEWTOWN AFC www.newtownafc.co.uk WREXHAM striker Nick Rushton spent a season on loan with Newtown under Bernie McNally back in the 2011/2012
season.
Despite Rushton's 13 goals he couldn't prevent the Robins from propping up the table on the last day of the season. But
everything ended well as Rushton went back off to Wrexham and the Robins were given a reprieve.
Two years on from his loan spell Rushton is now at Barrow for the remainder of the campaign. And he has been
speaking to Jonny Drury for the first time since leaving Latham Park in 2012.
The strike came through the youth set up at Wrexham, before gaining his first team experience at Newtown.
And the little forward has said it was a great learning curve for him in Mid Wales.
He said: "Being on loan at Newtown was a big learning curve for me as it helped me make the transaction from youth
and reserve football to men's football. It really help me along in my career.
"It was a tough season that year but I felt the team was still good enough and couldn't believe where we was in the
league table."
Rushton helped the Robins to a league cup final, and scored some memorable goals in the campaign, but he feels he
could have grabbed more.
He said: "We did have a good run in the league cup, just as shame we couldn't win it. I was happy with the amount of
goals I scored but would have loved to score more to help the team. But like I said before going on loan to a team such
as Newton was a good thing for me to do as he helped me progress as a player."
His current stint at Barrow has seen him making regular appearances, but he has stated that his future lies at the
Racecourse.
He said: "My aim this year was to break into Wrexham's first team after having a good season there last year and
winning young of the year. Things didn't quite go to plan in pre-season so will have to hope I get the chance to break
into the team next year.
"However I am really enjoying my football at Barrow the moment as we have had a really good run and I have been
scoring goals so I can't complain."
Since Rushton left the Robins they survived relegation last season, and have gone on to finish in the top six this
campaign.
And the former forward is routing for his former side to get into Europe, and still looks out for the results.
He said: "I think Newtown have done very well this season getting into the top half. With the chance to get into Europe
is a massive thing and I really hope they can do it and wish them all the best.
"I still check all the results and try to watch the highlights whenever I can."

PORT TALBOT TOWN www.porttalbottown.co.uk Rhys Griffiths has set his sights on winning the Corbett Sports WPL golden boot award after soaring to the top of
the charts with a record-breaking haul against Afan Lido.
The Port Talbot striker scored seven times against the Steelmen’s rivals in last Friday’s local derby.
That bettered the achievement of Marc Lloyd Williams, who twice scored six during one game.
It took Griffiths’s league tally to 18, meaning he now leads the top scorers table, two ahead of Aberystwyth’s
Chris Venables.
.
“The golden boot is something I think about, it’s something I will always be known for and it’s an award I would
love to win again,” said Griffiths, who has claimed the prize seven times before.
“But the most important thing is the club. We’ve had a disappointing season, we have underachieved. As much as
I loved scoring seven goals It doesn’t make up for that fact.”
The golden boot is something I think about, it’s something I will always be known for and it’s an award I would
love to win again. Griffiths is the league’s second all-time leading scorer behind Lloyd Williams.
He began his astonishing spree last Friday with a 12th minute penalty to cancel out a shock Lido opener.
Martin Rose then put the Steelmen ahead against their bottom-placed hosts at the break before Griffiths struck
five more times in the second period, including another from the spot.
“It is something to be proud of but to be honest it hasn’t really sunk in yet,” added Griffiths.
“We were playing against a side who are struggling in the league and they went down to ten men early, but it is a
nice achievement.
“I’m happy with every record that I can get. I want as many as I can.
“I don’t think anyone has stepped up to the plate this year, I don’t think anyone has been exceptional in front of
goal.
“Chris Venables has been outstanding from midfield. He’s the best player in the league by a country mile.”
PRESTATYN TOWN www.ptfconline.co.uk Coach Martin Jones had this to say following the Seasiders defeat at Port Talbot.
“Another disappointing display and result. We made a bright start but our quality in the final third was missing.
Their goal was from a soft free kick and Bouaza shouldn't have scored from that angle. The goal diminished
players’ fragile confidence and more errors crept in. We started brightly second half but a lack of awareness for
the second ball cost us when Jones forced home their second goal.
“Rob Hughes made a difference when he came on as sub but we never really looked like salvaging anything.
“Next week's match with Connah's Quay is huge. Our future is, thankfully, still in our own hands so we need to
grasp the opportunity and make sure everyone is fully prepared for that battle. We hope that all the supporters
will rally round and cheer on the lads in the remaining games.”

THE NEW SAINTS FC www.tnsfc.co.uk The Oswestry Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile took place at Park Hall Stadium On Sunday morning.
The Deputy Mayor of Oswestry, John Gareth Jones opened the races, which ranged from one mile to six miles.
Over 55 people took part in the run that started off at 11:00am.
Event organiser, Naomi Stocker was delighted with how the day went and said, ‘We wouldn’t have been able to
do it if it wasn’t for the kind help from the local volunteers which included Gareth Thomas and co, who are from
the Oswestry project.
“The TNS stewards who help out most weekends were a great help and they marshalled the event. Clare and Rob
Walker from Cross-Fit Oswestry, ’Bully’ and Reanna Walker were all brilliant too.
“I would also like to say a big thank you to Lucy and Shelly McLinchey, Sarah Roberts and Ellie Battam for
helping out.’
Everyone associated with The New Saints Football Club would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped
make the event run smoothly.

THE LAST WORD from Gwyn Derfel I have to start today by congratulating Airbus UK for securing their place in Europe for a second
successive year – a great achievement for everyone associated with the club.
I was fortunate enough to be present in Broughton on Friday evening to witness their crucial victory
against Rhyl. The fact that there weren’t any major celebrations on the final whistle was a clear
indication that securing an Europa League spot isn’t enough for Andy Preece and his ambitious men.
They are rightly still intent on securing their first ever Corbett Sports WPL title and if they continue
playing as they did on Friday for the remainder of the season – a truly memorable climax to the season is
guaranteed.
It is equally as exciting at the foot of the table. gap Connah’s Quay were very impressive during their
deserved victory against Aberystwyth on Saturday while Prestatyn’s recent poor run of results continued
at Port Talbot. What a game we have in prospect at Bastion Gardens on Saturday as the Nomads make
the short journey up the coast. It won’t be an occasion for the faint hearted.
Next weekend will see another occasion to savour as well as the first ever Welsh Premier Women’s
League Cup Final will be contested between Cardiff Met and Llanidloes. The game will be played at the
GenQuip Stadium in Port Talbot at 2.30 pm on Sunday. Please support the teams and the first ever final
– in years to come you will be able to say ‘I was there!’
Enjoy your week.
Y GAIR OLAF gan Gwyn Derfel Mae’n bleser dechrau’r llith wythnosol y tro hwn drwy longyfarch Airbus am hawlio’u lle yn Ewrop am
yr ail flwyddyn o’r bron. Tipyn o gamp yn wir sy’n cadarnhau datblygiad diweddar y clwb.
‘Ro’n i’n ddigon ffodus i fod ym Mrychdyn nos Wener i’w gweld nhw’n curo’r Rhyl a chadarnhau eu
lle yng Ngynghrair Europa o leiaf. Arwydd clir o uchelgais y clwb bellach yw’r ffaith nad oedd
dathliadau gwirioneddol ar y chwiban olaf gan bod Airbus yn dal i gredu’n gryf y gallant ddal Y
Seintiau a chipio’u coron gyntaf erioed yn UGC-Corbett Sports.
Mae diweddglo hynod o ddifyr i’r tymor yn ein haros.
Mae’r cyffro a’r cnoi ewinedd yr un mor amlwg tua gwaelodion y tabl hefyd. ‘Roedd Gap Cei Connah’n
llwyr haeddu eu buddugoliaeth yn erbyn Aberystwyth brynhawn Sadwrn – tra parhau wnaeth rhediad
gwael diweddar Prestatyn ym Mhort Talbot. Bydd yr ornest rhwng y clwb o Sir Ddinbych a’r clwb o Sir
y Fflint ar Erddi Bastion ddydd Sadwrn yn achlysur i’r gwan galon ei osgoi’n llwyr !
Y penwythnos nesaf hefyd bydd achlysur cofiadwy arall yn digwydd wrth i Rownd Derfynol gyntaf
erioed Cwpan Cynghrair y Merched ddigwydd ym Mhort Talbot ddydd Sul (2.30pm). Llanidloes a
Myfyrwyr Met Caerdydd fydd yn brwydro am yr hawl i gael eu dwylo ar y tlws newydd sbon – felly
cefnogwch yr achlysur fel y gallwch ymhen blynyddoedd i ddod ddweud ‘roeddwn i yno yn y ffeinal
gyntaf un !’
Mwynhewch eich wythnos.
