WP List Mailer requirements and optional setup

items

Here is the list with WP List Mailer requirements. Make sure you check them and prepare your files and server before installing WP List Mailer *Notes• DO NOT upload the WP List Mailer folder you purchased directly to your server by FTP or

by using WordPress plugin install function ! It will NOT work. Please read and follow thesteps below.

• If you install WP List Mailer on a working/existing blog, make sure to back it up before. We have thoroughly tested our plugin but we cannot guarantee that some configurationswon't be affected. We are not responsible for any damage to your blog.

• The best way is to install WP List Mailer on a fresh, clean WordPress installation to avoidany incompatibilities• WP List Mailer will not function until the steps under  Activation and license code guide

part are not completed !• This guide was made using a Windows 7 PC - the menus and commands will not be the

same on Mac or Linux machines

Required items

• Linux based hosting , min 32 Mb RAM available - make sure your host can support your site.We recommend at least a VPS server for any site with a decent amount of members andemail sent. Our recommended hosting is BigScoots - they will also help you with WP Lis tMailer install and prepare the server for it, making the job much eas ier for you. And theyhave incredibly cheap offers

• PHP 5.2 installed on server with phpcurl enabled• ioncube loader for php 5.2 +• cron jobs - at minimum 2 are required• WP 3.0 +• A FTP software that will allow you to upload files to your server (make sure you have your

FTP login/pass at hand) - We recommend Filezilla, it's easy and s imple to use but you canuse anything you want. Make sure the transfer mode is ‘binary’ while you upload the files.

All of the above are included if you opt in for BigScoots hosting, if you already have a good one, make s ure to check all prerequis ites are met. We have decided to recommend them for their spotless s upport during the time we used them as our hosting provider and also because theywill help each of our clients to install WP List Mailer quick and painless .

Conflicts and initial settings

You need to know that WP List Mailer works using default WordPress system for membership towhich we added our modifications. You will need to make sure that your membershipregis tration is open - like in the image above. To verify, log into WP admin and go to GeneralSettings - check that is enabled.

The easies t way to install WP List Mailer would be to disable all other plugins if you are doing aninstall on existing site. There are certain plugins that will NOT work with WP List Mailer, like WPSales Engine, WP Spire - pretty much any plugin in this category (OTO, sales page creation andso on). Also any membership plugin will most likely conflict with WP List Mailer. Obvious ly wecould not test WP List Mailer with every possible plugin and combination but it will work with a

wide variety of plugins.

If you cannot or don't want to disable all your plugins please disable all that are in the

categories - sales page offer creation, membership plugins, redirect and custom paths,captcha-related plugins and any other big resource consuming plugin. Most of them will workprobably after you finish installing WP List Mailer but in order to accomplish some tasks youneed to have the least pos sible interferences(e.g. you will not be able to import contacts if captcha plugins are active)

Please m inimize the poss ible causes for errors and try to disable ALL plugins . This will shortenthe install time and will eliminate any possible cause of conflict. We will do our best to providehelp where needed but cannot help everyone that chooses not to lis ten our advices.

Create de fault members hip - step 1

In order to use WP List Mailer you need at leas t one active membership type - the default membership. The default membership is the one each member will have once they subscribe -

the lowest grade or cheapest type if you want.Notes:•  You should prepare before installation with a membership plan - credits, price, bonuses

and also what rights will each membership have are the most important things toconsider - Do your math carefully so you balance the credits each member can gain byclicking with the credits they can spend on site for emails and banner/text ads

• Set your email limits according to your server capabilities! The best way is to asksupport about email limitations of your server if you are not sure! We are not

8/3/2019 WP List Mailer Guide

responsible of any loss you might suffer if you set your limits too high (hosting accountloss or even worse...)!

• All price fields are numbers, not percents and are displayed in the currency you will

select in the General settings-Payment options tab•  You cannot delete a membership type after your site has launched and is operationalwithout messing up the database. Each membership type can be edited and if you don'tuse it anymore or is a trial or a temporary membership, can be disabled by changing thestatus from Active to Inactive

• The paid membership are not automatically renewing - we are working to improve thisbut for now you have to consider this fact. The paid members are informed of their membership expiration and they have the option to buy it again from the upgrade menuor choose another membership.

• Very Important ! - at the first login to each member is presented a series of pop-upwindows containing upgrade offers for your membership types -remember all members

sign in as default member types - . The pop-ups are ordered from your last entry in themember type - the last one you create- to the second(the default is not presented asthey are logged in that membership). So you should create your membership type fromthe least expensive to the most expensive order. If your most expensive is $100 and theleast is $10, start creating the $10 first and move up until you create the last one the$100. This way the first upgrade offer will be the most expensive.

Here are the explanations for each field and step-by-step tutorial:1. Name - Choose a descriptive name for the membership type, like "Free" if there is no

charge. You can put whatever you want though.

2. Price - The price members will pay - 0 if it's free3. Duration - The membership duration in days - with WP List Mailer you can have

memberships that can last years, months or a few days if you want to. Choose your number or input 0 for a lifetime membership. Don't forget these are days !

4. Discount fields - Add here the discount you want to offer for a paid membership type. e.g. if you want to have a 10 day promo with $5 off an $10 membership, add 5 into the discountfield then select discount start and end dates. Add your discount text - this wil l be presentedin the upgrade offers each member can see after the first login.

5. "Is contributor" - a very powerful option and a unique feature. By checking this option themembers will have a new "Posts" tab in their member menu where they can add posts tothe blog. They will use the WordPress editor and have access to all plugin fields and

settings any editor has so you can have all sorts of extra features enabled via plugins for your members if you choose so.

6. Registration credits - the amount of credits each member will receive once they register 7. Read Mail Bonus Min/Max - WP List Mailer has a random feature for reading credits that

members will receive upon clicking on a credit link or ad. You can choose different valuesfor each membership type so that higher level members could earn credits they needeasier. e.g. 20 value for Min and 40 for Max will reward members a random number of credits between 20 to 40, like 28 or 36 and so on

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/wp-list-mailer-guide 29/107

WP List Mailer © 2011 User Guide V1.0WP List Mailer Guide - 29

8. Save Mail Limit - each membership can have sent email messages saved for statisticsdata (number of open messages is dis played) and re-use. You can set how many emailswill be saved for each membership level. Do not allow a very high number - like hundreds,

even tens for a large number of members will add cons iderably to the server load andperformance.9. Advert Limit - you can create many advert types and s izes in the Advertising settings tab

and also determine which membership types can use them- here you can choose howmany you wil l allow the specific member type to use - 0, 1 or more, it's up to you. You shouldknow ads are displayed through widgets in your s idebars and widgetized areas. Manyrecent themes have multiple sidebars options so you can display specific ads in eachsidebar. You will be also able to set the s izes for all ads that will be displayed on your site.

10. Referral Bonus - if a member is actively promoting your site and a new member registers toyour site from this promotion, the member will automatically gain the specified number of credits

11. Maximum recipients per mail - another important setting you should cons ider beforestarting the site - This is the number each membership type is allowed to send in theinterval you wil l set below (Mail limit) - if you're not careful you will very easy get over email limit or server capabilities. You wil l need to do some math here to find out themaximum email capabilities for your server so that you can set a decent amount here. e.g if you want to allow 1000 members to send to each every day that's 100.000 emails daily(of course not all will do it but even half would be 50 k emails). o send 100k email the server has to be capable and allow you to send at least 4166 email hourly. So plan ahead and doyour math before launching your offer and give yourself a good margin. WP List Mailer iscapable of sending the email at almos t the speed of the server so the real factor you shouldconsider here is the server capability. As we mentioned before, we have tested and

recommend our hosting company of choice - BigScoots . Visit them and check their offer.12. Mail Limit - The setting is straightforward - how many emails is the member allowed to

send in a set interval i days - e.g daily is 1 mail per 1 day, weekly 1 mail per 7 days and soon. You can even have something like 100 email per 365 days so the member can send hisor her emails when they want in that interval. As almost all options wee tried to give youcomplete freedom so you can set everything to your pleasure. By combining the settingshere with Maximum recipients per mail setting you can control the email part very easy witha little planning. You can allow a bigger recipient number but al lower frequency or lessrecipients but more often, it's up to you.

13. Status - We mentioned before that once you create a membership type you cannot delete it (you can reset all settings as you will see) Every membership though can be edited and

also set Active or Inactive . If you don't want to us e a membership type a period or you justdon't want to edit it for any reason you can set it to Inactive - the members will not beaffected and they will continue to have the same privileges as set when they regis tered untilthe membership duration expires . Then they can upgrade or be automatically reverted to thedefault membership type.

Once you set everything you can click Submit. Don't worry, if you forgot anything you will be ableto edit the membership type. If some required setting is missing you won't be able to subm it

until you complete the required field.

You can now proceed for the next step or you could add all your membership types now if

you made a plan and you are sure on the number of membership types you want to have.We would advise to give as much as possible to these settings. Give some thought on how you want your site to function, if you need/want a trial membership, how many would be and how much the upgrades will cost, all these are factors you should consider.

To create the other membership types just follow the steps above for each membershiptype. You can use the short code [showmembertypes] to display all available membershipsin any page or post.

Create de fault members hip - step 2

Once you have your default membership created you need to go to General Settings - >Registration Settings - > Default Member type drop down menu. Select from there themembership type you want to set as default.Warning - Once you set this all members that register will automatically be assigned to thismembership type.

Final activation step - license check

The final s tep required to activate WP List Mailer is the license check. This is required for safetyand as an anti-theft measure but also to insure proper communication at API level. Using WPList Mailer API we will implement a hos t of features - like the ability to organize solo-emails -after 2 or more WP List Mailer owners have an agreement they can offer a JV email option for their members - the email will get send to all members of all sites involved. Other powerfulfeatures will be implemented using the API so this is a necessity.

To receive your API key you will need to email us with your domain URL where WP List Mailer will be installed. If you use a different email than the one registered at WP List Mailer you willneed to add in the email the Paypal transaction number for verification and the email

address you registered with. The API key is unique for each site/owner, do NOT give it awayor allow access to it to untrusted persons.

Until now we set up all absolutely required settings. WP List Mailer will work but in order touse it at it's full potential you will need to set up more items. Most settings we present arerecommended but you can set almost any parameter as you like if you want to experiment. We will do our best to help you understand the function, the rest is up to you. Here is one of the main parts of WP List Mailer - the membership creation. You can createUNLIMITED membership types , hide some if not used (special offers, trials, JV...). You need toknow that each ACTIVE membership type along with details is presented in a pop-up window tonew members at their first login AUTOMATICALLY. The order is from the latest ACTIVE entry inyour membership lis t to the first non-default entry. The default membership is the one assigned to ALL new members once they join your site. Toupgrade, they will have to either accept one of the upgrade offers pop-ups or go to their upgrade

entry in member menu.To create a new membership type you wil l need the WP List Mailer to be in active state, at leas ttemporarily. If it's not (the WP Lis t Mailer s tatus is always displayed in your WP admin dashboard,at top) go to WP Lis t Mailer - General Settings -Server state and activate it. Below is a walk throughon membership creation.

To create a membership type, please read detailed instructions in the WP List Mailer Guide.pdf  - you will be talked through all the steps required.

Notes:•  You should prepare before installation with a membership plan - credits, price, bonuses

and also what rights will each membership have are the most important things toconsider - Do your math carefully so you balance the credits each member can gain byclicking with the credits they can spend on site for emails and banner/text ads

• Set your email limits according to your server capabilities! The best way is to asksupport about email limitations of your server if you are not sure! We are notresponsible of any loss you might suffer if you set your limits too high (hosting account

loss or even worse...)!• All price fields are numbers, not percents and are displayed in the currency you will

select in the General settings-Payment options tab

•  You cannot delete a membership type after your site has launched and is operationalwithout messing up the database.

- at the first login to each member is presented a series of pop-upwindows containing upgrade offers for your membership types -remember all memberssign in as default member types - . The pop-ups are ordered from your last entry in the

member type - the last one you create- to the second(the default is not presented asthey are logged in that membership). So you should create your membership type fromthe least expensive to the most expensive order. If your most expensive is $100 and theleast is $10, start creating the $10 first and move up until you create the last one the$100. This way the first upgrade offer will be the most expensive.

Here are the explanations for each field and step-by-step tutorial:

1. Name - Choose a descriptive name for the membership type, like "Free" if there is nocharge. You can put whatever you want though.

2. Price - The price members will pay - 0 if it's free

3. Duration - The membership duration in days - with WP List Mailer you can havememberships that can last years, months or a few days if you want to.

They will use the WordPress editor and have access to all plugin fields andsettings any editor has so you can have all sorts of extra features enabled via plugins for

your members if you choose so.6.

8. Save Mail Limit - each membership can have sent email messages saved for statistics

8/3/2019 WP List Mailer Guide

WP List Mailer © 2011 User Guide V1.0WP List Mailer Guide - 36

data (number of open messages is dis played) and re-use. You can set how many emailswill be saved for each membership level. Do not allow a very high number - like hundreds, even tens for a large number of members will add cons iderably to the server load and

performance.9. Advert Limit - you can create many advert types and s izes in the Advertising settings taband also determine which membership types can use them- here you can choose howmany you wil l allow the specific member type to use - 0, 1 or more, it's up to you.

11. Maximum recipients per mail - another important setting you should cons ider before

starting the site - This is the number each membership type is allowed to send in theinterval you wil l set below (Mail limit) - if you're not careful you will very easy get over email limit or server capabilities. You wil l need to do some math here to find out themaximum email capabilities for your server so that you can set a decent amount here. e.g if you want to allow 1000 members to send to each every day that's 100.000 emails daily(of course not all will do it but even help would be 50 k emails). To send 100k email the server has to be capable and allow you to send at least 4166 email hourly. So plan ahead and doyour math before launching your offer and give yourself a good margin. WP List Mailer iscapable of sending the email at almos t the speed of the server so the real factor you shouldconsider here is the server capability. As we mentioned before, we have tested andrecommend our hosting company of choice - BigScoots . Visit them and check their offer.

12. Mail Limit - The setting is straightforward - how many emails is the member allowed tosend in a set interval i days - e.g daily is 1 mail per 1 day, weekly 1 mail per 7 days and soon.

13. Status - We mentioned before that once you create a membership type you cannot delete it (you can reset all settings as you will see) Every membership though can be edited andalso set Active or Inactive . If you don't want to us e a membership type a period or you just

don't want to edit it for any reason you can set it to Inactive - the members will not beaffected and they will continue to have the same privileges as set when they regis tered untilthe membership duration expires . Then they can upgrade or be automatically reverted to thedefault membership type.

Once you set everything you can click Submit. Don't worry, if you forgot anything you will be ableto edit the membership type. If some required setting is missing you won't be able to subm ituntil you complete the required field.

To create a trial membership, add as a discount the full amount of your price - e.g. if the priceis $10, out a $10 discount. Then set a period for your discount and add your discount text and

other settings and activate it.

To create the another membership types just follow the steps above for each membershiptype. You can use the short code [showmembertypes] to display all available membershipsin any page or post.

Upgrade membership pop-up

Above you can see a screen shot of upgrade pop-up in action. This is presented to EACH newmember after they log in the first time, ONCE. If they aren't taking the upgrade offers they canupgrade at any time in their upgrade menu . You can find out more about member s ide settingsin the WP List Mailer member-side guide.pdf .

Setup Admin Account step 1

•  You will need an admin account in order to send emails to all members. It is bes t if youset it up once all other membership type accounts are done. Using the admin account youwill be able to send emails to all user levels and communicate the latest news, contests

8/3/2019 WP List Mailer Guide

and other things. Also as a good incentive for members to open them, you should add agood premium to read bonuses .

• Create a new membership type following the steps we presented before. This time you

should add really high values - at least as much as you think you will need for save maillimit, advert limit, max recipients and max mail per day - as we did above. Once it's done youwill set it to inactive so it won't be displayed in the upgrade offers or in the membership lis tthat can be set up using the shortcode [showmembertypes]

Setup Admin Account step 2

Register as a new member by going to the default WordPress registration page - the link ishttp:// Yourdomain.com/wp-login.php?action=register  , replace Yourdomain.com with your

domain name. You have to use a new email account that is not already registered at your blog/site. 1. Go to Wp List users tab in your admin area and select the newly created account. You can

search for it if you have more emails(you shouldn't unless you already imported a lis t). Clickon Change Type link. Once you activated the command the options from #2 will sl ide abovelike in the image.

2. Choose the new member type you created for admin - you might have named it admin :) and3. submit. Once it's done, you can log out of WP admin account and log in the new WP List

Mailer admin account to test it. Will cover this in Testing chapter.Create 1 or more test accounts

This is optional but highly recommended. In order to make sure everything is working as itshould and the members will be able to send-receive emails , set their ads and use all thefunctions you activate for them you should create at least one test account. Just regis ter as anew member in your default membership. Then log in the new account and send emails, setyour ads and verify all functions . With just a single account you can't verify thoroughly the emailsending and receiving part so you might wanna use 2 or more testing accounts. You will need anew email for each account.

In order to use a s ingle account for testing, you can s tart by testing the default membership.Once you're done and satisfied you can upgrade the account following the steps done with your admin account, just choose the second level membership. Repeat the upgrade to test all

membership types. Even better would be to have 1-2 friends or team members help you - thiswill speed everything up.

General Settings - Mail settings

This is another vital part in WP Lis t Mailer configuration. These settings affect directly the number of emails being sent by the server. It is critical to not go over your server capacity so be careful. Alittle math will help you here to calculate the ratios. Make sure you get first the email lim its andcapacity of your server from your email provider. They can help you also to set this up by giving youthe exact values . If you followed our recommendation and choose your hos ting from Big Scoot offers, they will have you covered.

Editing mail settings

1. Members have the option to use their own email when sending an email or choose to gideit and use the email provided here in your settings. We suggest you to use something [email protected]

2. Credit per mail : how many credits will be deducted from the users account after sending asingle mail to a single receiver.

3. Maximum mail per day : the highes t number of mai ls the server can send in a day. This

8/3/2019 WP List Mailer Guide

reflects your server capability. Contact your host for it. The plugin wil l never send more thanthis in a day

4. Maximum Mail per hour : How many emails are you allowed to send in an hour in your

server. In a dedicated server you can have it set to 10000 - 100000 emails5. Maximum Mail per Cron : Emails are scheduled and sent periodically for ensuringconsis tency and integrity of the system with the help of complex schedule management andcron files. In every server each cron script can run for a certain period of time. This settingtells the cron file how m any email is to be processed and sent in each run. If your server has maximum 30 seconds set for a run and you have a shared server then limit to 10. If youhave a dedicated server you should set it to 100 or more. Remember this is alsoinfluenced by the server setting for the cron - e.g. if you set the cron to run each minuteand the max mail per cron to 1000 then the server will send 1000 emails each minute.

It is important that you work with your hos ting company to set up the settings above. For sites

just starting up there is no need to go over the board and set it to the max, you can put morerelaxed values here.

Create and set up advert blocks

In this section you will learn how to create and set up the advertising part of WP Lis t Mailer. WPList Mailer has provisions for 2 types of on-site advertising -text and banner ads. Both can be setup of any size you want so they can fit any des ign possible. The only requirement is to havesidebars enabled as the ad blocks are displayed through widgets

Do not delete created advert blocks. If an advert block is deleted, the place where youattached the block won't show it

Create a new advert block

Go to Advertising settings -> Create Advert Block . All is straightforward here, just remember toname each advert block with a suggestive name like "250x250 sidebar img" or "200 char textad "-this way it will be eas ier for you and for members when they will set up their ads. The sizeis relevant to either text or banner ads, the min character is only for text ads, set it to 0 for bannersEach widget will only display 1 ad at one time. The ads are rotated from the same ad group

when more banners are available. To display more ads at one time simply place more adblock widgets.

1. X size in pixels, e.g. 250 - You should know your theme sidebar usable width so that theads won't go over the limits or be displayed improperly

2.  Y size in pixels e.g. 300 - Try to set up your ads so that members can use standard banner sizes like 250x250 or 125x125px for your s idebars. If you can create widgets in footer or other places you can consider other sizes for your ad blocks

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/wp-list-mailer-guide 53/107

3. Max Character - the maximum number of characters that members are allowed to use, including spaces. You can allow s mall 3 word text ads or 100 word ads, it's up to you !

4. Min CPM/CPC - WP List Mailer offers 2 type of payment for ads - CPM (cost per impression)

and CPC (cost per click), both settings should have a value in credits. These should befamiliar for anyone using PPC, for the res t, don't worry, it's not that complicated. Each isself-explanatory, for more information, follow the links - CPM/CPC . If you only want one tobe used you should s et up a very high credit price for the other. It will probably take time toget a perfect value s o you should experiment and test with these settings . If you happen toknow your average click through of your banners from other sources you can take those asa template for the CPM/CPC settings . MAny ad manager plugins have statistics so you cantake those into consideration. Let's assume a 10% CTR(Clickthrough rate) - then if 1000impress ions cost is 100 credits the CPC cost should be 1 credit to have the same value.

5. Chose the member... - Here you can select which membership type will have the Ad blockavailable in their member area menu. This way you can further differentiate between

member types and keep the best ad places for premium membership types

Once you're done, click subm it. Repeat the process for each ad block. Do NOT delete active adblocks if used as all ads will be lost.

Credit pack setting

Depending on how you set your credit settings for your membership types, some members coulduse more credits to display more ads or email more often. This is a perfect opportunity to makesome money. You can create credit packs that would be available for all members to purchase intheir member area menu. It's up to you to make them cheap (maybe set lower credit allowances -the read bonus in the membership creation tab - so that members will either need to read moreemails to send theirs or buy some) or even sell high for those not willing to bother to click onemail links. It's up to you and maybe some fine tuning will be required once you have a runningsite.

To create a credit pack, go to WP List Mailer - Credit packs and s tart creating. There are jus t a fewsimple settings, explained below.

Create a new cred it pack

1. Set the amount of credits for this pack2. The price in your set currency. You should choose carefully - having a plan is again a good

idea3. You can have certain credit packs that can be available only for a short while - promotions, gifts for all members and so on. Once the event is over, you can dis able the credit pack andactivate again when needed.

Repeat the s teps to create more credit packs, make sure those you want to be displayed inmembers area are Active

One Time Offers

One Time Offers are special offers that can be displayed for members and visitors at presetevents - before or after login, registration or for guests. These are full HTML pages that you canset up and edit as you wish. Their purpose would be to help in promoting other sites andproducts, sale your own products or s imply display ads. Members are credited for viewing theOTO's but these can be us ed as promo pop ups also.OTO's are very easy to setup and are very powerful if used properly. Offers are tracked two ways, browser cookies and member ids. Guest and registration offers are presented only once per browser/IP or user but if the IP changes and the user clears the cookies the offer will bepresented again. If you create an after login offer, it means it will be showed to every member once. If you create a registration offer, it will be shown only in registration page. If the sameperson accesses the registration page from another PC he will see it again. The before login

1. As many other settings, OTO's have a campaign setting - you can choose a s tart and enddate so once you set it up you can forget about it ! Just make sure you plan it well.

2. Period - you can set a second timer - e.g. you can offer 500 extra credits to anyone that willregister in the 1 hour period after click ing on ‘Accept’ button in your offer . The plugin willremember and automatically add the credits to qualified members. With a little imaginationyou can use this in many ways

3. Credits - Offer credits as incentive to regis ter, vis it a certain offer or whatever reason you like4. Target Link - This is the link for a page you promote or whatever link you want to open when

the vis itor clicks on Accept Offer button (more about it in the next chapter). In the sampleabove we set the link to open the regis tration page. So when a visitor arrives, if he likes the

offer can join in 1 hour time and get 500 extra credits. The visitors can register immediatelyas the registration page will open if the Accept the offer.

5. Content - Add your text, images or other HTML content. It can display almost any kind of

content, make sure you don't go overboard as the size will grow to fit your content.6. Onevent - This determines WHEN the pop up will be displayed - above for the guest setting, will appear for every new vis itor ONCE. This should be us ed for offers catered tonon-members and regular visitors . Registration setting would be appropriate for goodincentives for registering while before login and after login settings are addressed toalready registered members.

7. Count - Another way to create the sense of urgency! Combining the 3 timing settings -campaign period - hour and count you can have for example an offer valid for 1 day, 1 hour and for the next 50 vis itors as we set it above. We're not ready yet ! See:

8. Max per User - A last setting to persuade those undecided. In order to give a secondchance to your members to take the offer you can set this to a higher number. e.g. an after

login offer that gives the member some credit incentive to see a 3'rd party sales page. If Maxper User is set to more than once members can accept the offer as m any times as the limitis to accumulate more credits, thus giving a better chance for a sale. Same would go for anad promoting other site, you got the idea...

Change the default value(5) to 50 to have 50 rows displayed in all menus. As we mentioned, themost affected are the User list and User emails tabs. Click Save and verify in the other tabs.

Plugins highly recommended

If you followed us until now you had completely set up WP List Mailer. Because we useWordPress functions some parts will not look as good or simply some functions could beimproved. There are a many things that can be improved, but we will focus mainly on theregistration and login page and more importantly the WordPress default email address. Surelyyou can combine and test many other plugins to add to WP List Mailer functions or looks . If youget some interesting results, send us an email :)

We could had integrated in WP List Mailer some or all the functions below but us ing other pluginswill give you the flexibili ty to choose the exact functions and s ettings you like and want. If youconsider wil l be better to have them integrated, post it on the forum and if others will cons ider thesame will update WP List Mailer withe the functions reques ted.

Change default email "from" name

This is a very important plugin as without it all your emails, including credit emails sent willbe sent with the default "WordPress" as sender name. This can lead to confusion and harmyour business.Since WP List Mailer uses WordPress functions where possible, the automated emailsgenerated when a new user subscribes will have the default "from" as WordPress . To change

that, you wil l find many dedicated plugins in the WordPress plugin repository. In the screenabove we used a s imple plugin called MailFrom and you can see the straightforward options.Just add your name that will appear in the from field and fill the other details.

Registration enhancements

The default WP registration and login process and pages are a bit bland, even after 3.2 updatebut there are plenty of plugins that can enhance the visual appeal of those pages and/or addmore functions and capabilities.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/wp-list-mailer-guide 84/107

WP List Mailer © 2011 User Guide V1.0WP List Mailer Guide - 84

What is more important for us would be a way to make the standard WP registration processdouble-optin as is the norm for a site like WPLM helps to create. The easies t and mos t capableplugin that will do that and also help you customize the registration and login pages is Register

Plus Redux . As you can see in the s creen shot above by checking the option "Verify..." wepractically made the registration a double opt-in. What's even more wonderful is that you have aton of other options that will help you customize this part in almost any way you like.

There are tons of other choices so if you think some other plugin will be better for you, go and tryit. For those really skilled there are ways to create new Registration and login pages, withcustom forms, or use widgets for both, even full skins for these pages . Also some other pluginsprovide other functions , like AWeber Registration Integration that will "seamlessly add users toyour AWeber account during registration on your s ite, either by request or silently"

How to test WP List Mailer

To fully test WP List Mailer once it is installed you should follow the steps below. We're assumingthat you created at least 1 test account and all the steps till here are completed successfully.

* NOTE/Hint - Testing involves lots of switching between accounts - the WordPress adminaccount, the WP List Mailer admin account and the test account you should have createdbefore. There can be only one active login at once per browser, so you won't be able to staylogged with 2 or more accounts unless you use 2 or more browsers. We recommend to useFirefox and Chrome to make things a bit easier. You can keep the WP admin open in one andswitch test accounts in the other browser.

Ver ify email send-rece ive function

• Log into your Admin account you should have created before and compose a test message.Content is not relevant but you can us e this opportunity to test also the editor. Use varioustext styles, sizes, colors and all elements you want to test in your message.

• Verify your content if all the elements you added are displayed properly

Now you can als o see maybe for the first time that the emails already contain the credit link and

the required disclaimer and unsubscribe link. The email automatically adds the subscribersname and email and a link that allow them to unsubscribe. Once clicked the page you set should open as in the next step.

members clicking this link will automatically receive the credits in their account- can beverified in the Credit History tab
