“Water” Is More Powerful Than a LocomotiveWater is a powerful thing! Did you know that we all experience the use
of water every day and every minute? As we breath, inhaling then exhaling, we are respiring waste material including water vapor! Water vapor comes from the water we drink, the food we eat, and the air we breath! Water is everywhere! It is in the air as rain, snow, ice, steam and fog. It makes up most of the volume of plants and animals, including humans. Our bodies
are about 60% water! Your blood is about 80-90% water and your muscles are around 75% water. To keep your body operating, you will need about 5 to 6 pints of water a day. A person can exist on a gallon of water a day for drinking, cooking, and washing, yet the modern person uses 80-100 gallons per day.
W WOOWW!!
Water is recycled — even the water you drink from the water fountain at school! One important fact to remember, new water cannot be manufactured. The Earth’s surface is 75% water, although less than 1% is fresh water that can be consumed by humans. So it is very important that we are practical with our use of water and do our best to use conservation practices when possible!
As your bus drives down the road, you may see a pond, a lake or a stream. It is alsolikely that you may see a Wetland , which is an area of land whose soil is saturatedwith moisture either all of the time or during the different seasons. These areas mayalso be completely covered and/or have small pools of water sitting onthem. Wetlands include swamps, marshes and bogs, among others. Thewater found in wetlands can be fresh or salt water or a mixture ofboth. These areas should be kept safe because they serve manypurposes! They full of living things like plant and animals which thrivein the living soils, water and the natural environment! They also serveas a natural wastewater purification system and filter away pollutants. Wetlands areoften called “kidneys” because they act like the organs in your body removing harmfulthings from your body!
Water is as important as soil and each person needs it to survive—for your health and well being, food, energy, jobs, andso much more! BE a conservation champion and learn how you can be a better water steward!
