July 2008

June 2008

The London Borough of Waltham Forest was createdby the amalgamation of Leyton, Walthamstow andChingford local authorities in 1965. The River Leaforms a natural boundary with Hackney and to thenorth and east are the woods of Epping Forest.Waltham Forest is mentioned in the Doomsday Bookof 1088 under the name of ‘Wacoumstou’ and untilthe 19th century the area remained largelyagricultural, with the only real industry being brickmaking and tiling using local materials. There werealso fisheries and mills along the River Lea, includingthe Copper Mill which in its lifetime has milledgunpowder, flour, paper, linseed and leather. Famouslocals include Alfred Hitchcock (filmproducer/director) and William Morris (interiordesigner), and Wood Street, Walthamstow was oncethe site of film studios in the silent era. The modernWaltham Forest is a very multicultural area and theentertainments and events in this guide reflect thatfact. There are plenty of sporting and culturalactivities, with theatres, galleries, leisure centres and,of course, a great street market. Travel links to theCity and West End are very good and you do not haveto go too far to find the seaside or countryside.
