The Home/School Partnership Curriculum Newsletter Summer Term 6 2012

WOW!

This term we worked as a

team to solve different

challenges. We had to

follow clues to find let-

ters that spelt out differ-

ent words. We also have

to work together to

cross the water to get

safely to the other side.

English

We will base a lot of work during this

theme on the story of Peter Pan by J.M.

Barrie. We will create stories based on

an island and begin to understand how to

develop plots. We will focus on the trials

and tribulation that the characters may

face and use carefully selected

vocabulary to describe the settings.

The children will be learning about

different animals that may live on and

around these islands and using their

knowledge of non-chronological reports

to create useful survival guides.

Home Learning Challenge

Design an imaginary island. Think about

and draw a plan of your ideal island geta-

way. What physical and human features

will you include? Remember a plan is a

bird’s eye view of a place! Please use co-

ordinates and include instructions on how

to find your buried treasure!

Art

Children will learn to use a viewfinder and record their observations

and ideas using a variety of methods, including photography, collage

and paint. They look at and comment on the work of photographers

and illustrators and create a story board for their extended

stories .This unit will be linked with English and drama activities –

using language and actions to convey situations, characters and

emotions. The children create their own representations of real or

fantasy situations using different media, linking art and ICT learning.

ICT

The learning in ICT is connected to the

learning theme ‘LOST!’ The children will be

using graphic programs to create images of

imaginary locations, the island in their story.

The children will develop word processing skills

through the presentation of their story using

word programs. The children will use video

cameras to film scenes from their story and

think about how stories can be told using

different media. The children will learn to

make a presentation with sound. .

Geography

In our Geography learning we will take a virtual trip to

the island of St Lucia. We will compare our lives to

the lives of people who live on the island and we will

compare transportation, plant life and animals life.

During our studies we will be learning how to use

maps and atlases to find countries and places of in-

terest. We will be using simple map symbols to help us

to create our own maps.

Forest Schools:

Every Friday we are continuing to

explore the outdoors with Miss

Harris. This term each group will

have 2 sessions each and we will be

creating a new home for the lost

boys and in our final sessions will be

enjoying a camp fire to celebrate.

Science

The children will be learning about the huge variety of living things within their local

environment. They will learn that although individual living things are different there are

similarities which can help to sort them into groups. The children will learn to recognise

similarities between animals and between plants and differences within these groups and

suggest questions relating to differences between living things. The children will also develop

enquiry skills through investigation activities, which will involve making measurements of length

using standard units. They will develop the skills of presenting data in different ways, then

making simple interpretations of these.

P.E

This term we will taking part in an Olympic style sports day where children will experience

activities such as javelin, shot put, hurdles and many more. We will also be developing our

sprinting skills further and taking part in races to test our skills.

During our indoor PE sessions the children will be developing their gymnastic skills further and

creating sequences with a friend. After Olympic sports day we will also be developing our

tennis skills.

Maths

In maths the children will be learning to solve problems

involving length. They will be using a variety of measuring

equipment to read scales accurately. They will be sorting and

interpreting data, then using this data to answer questions.

The children will be consolidating their learning about

fractions and developing their understanding of 1/2, 1/4 and

3/4 of shapes and numbers. They will be working together in

small groups to solve puzzles and problems and consolidating

their known number facts.

PSHE -

This term we will continue our work on the d

‘Be The Best You Can Be!’ programme. We

will think hard about our comfort zone and how we can move

out of it at times which will allow us to experience new things.

The children will also begin to realise effect that positive

thinking has on their well being and ability to be open minded.

R.E

The children are introduced to the Sefer Torah (the Torah scroll), which is the focal point of Jewish worship and the source of Jewish

teaching, custom and practice. Children will also spend time looking at an important story in the Torah and will be examining the characters

feelings and the symbolism of colours for the story of Joseph and the Coat.
