Introduction
The origins of woven wire mesh in architecture and design are based on
industrial applications involving filtration and separation. More recently
architecture has adopted these materials for their outstanding visual impact,
strength and versatility. Our range of woven meshes have been designed
and selected with this in mind, with the GKD materials at the very forefront.
Although there are standard fixing methods, which are illustrated in this
book, many of the projects shown using woven meshes have individually
designed fixings and finishings to suit the clients’ needs.
The increased use of these materials in architecture and design has led
to a number of innovations and exciting new products which you will find
in the following pages.
Product Properties
As a raw material woven wire mesh offers unique
properties to the designer, combining exceptionally
large panel sizes with flexibility and efficient fastening
techniques. The variety of weaves allows the
issues of transparency, acoustics and airflow to
be resolved through the correct choice of mesh.
Creative lighting accentuates the visual impact
of the material from simple lighting to full image
projection as recently showcased on the Bernabeu
Stadium in Spain.
The pre-crimped and welded meshes have many
of the aesthetic and acoustic properties of the
cable meshes with the additional benefits of natural
rigidity. Designed to be more effective over smaller
areas, these meshes are ideal for balustrading and
screening applications.
Our entire woven and welded mesh range can be
made from high-grade 316 quality steel, which is
suitable for almost all environments and offers the
greatest resistance to corrosion and discolouration.

The Manufacturing Process
Our woven meshes are manufactured using hybrid
automated looms. The warp rods or wires are
stretched and spaced vertically, a shuttle then fires
back and forth adding the weft material. Depending
on weave components, sheets of up to 8 metres in
width and of practically unlimited length are possible
(please note that these larger panels are only
available using cable meshes).
The construction of this material allows flexibility
in one direction whilst maintaining a degree of
rigidity in the other. Tensioning the mesh correctly
through fixing methodology will add additional rigidity
and stability to the entire assembly if required.
The pre-crimp meshes are woven in a similar
way also using looms. These meshes offer a rigid
panel that requires no tensioning making it ideal
for specific applications such as balustrading.
Materials
It is also worth considering that whilst the
majority of meshes are specified in either
Stainless Steel 304 or 316L, other materials
are available for bespoke weaves including
Bronze, Brass, Aluminium and Copper.

Case Study
Carlyle Square, London
This commissioned sculpture was a relatively
unusual application for a material that is more
commonly associated with cladding and screening.
The material was hung under tension with
water flowing from the bespoke fixings, with
the final piece being beautifully enhanced through
sensitive lighting.

Laminated Mesh - Introduction
Laminated Mesh, one of the latest innovations from
Cadisch MDA has been developed in conjunction
with Fusion Glass whose knowledge and experience
with designed glass is unrivalled. Between us we
have brought together our expertise in our own
fields to offer a range of materials that are unlike
any other. These materials allow the transparency,
rigidity and enclosing qualities of glass, with the
depth, added strength and the decorative qualities
of the meshes.
Our woven meshes are laminated between two
layers of annealed or toughened glass of varying
thickness depending on structural, safety and the
aesthetic requirements of the project.

Hand-Woven Grilles/Meshes
Hand-Woven Grilles
These products have been made the same way for
over a hundred years. Every wire is cut, crimped
and then woven in by hand. Each grille is built to
your sizes and specifications, as the mesh does
not hold shape when cut from larger panels.
Meshes
We offer square or diamond weave in six sizes,
including some non-standard patterns. The mesh
sizes range from 4mm through to 25mm and can
be woven using materials such as brass, stainless
steel and Aluminium.
