PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
In January we hosted an Annual Millionaires Night at Grenoside Community Centre. This was to raise funds for our partnership with Ecclesfield Parish Council to supply defibrilators in areas throughout the North Sheffield Area. The event was very successful, hopefully raising in excess of £2500. Many thanks to all who attended, both to work and support, you all did a grand job. We had pie and peas (well some of you did) supplied again by JOHN CRAWSHAWS STOCKSBRIDGE, and I would like to thank John’s staff for serving them. SPECIAL thanks for the members of SITWELL club and President Andrew Bates for joining us on the night, it was lovely to see you and I hope you were well looked after. We have been asked as a club to possibly supply tables etc for their Charter in SEPT. I have already secured the table and croupier compliments of Napoleons Hillsborough. Which brings me on to the croupier that for the last three/four years has given his own time to make our night eventful (MANY THANKS DAVE) see you next year. President Trevor NEWS

thanks with regard to the last batch of Yorkshire
Tea Bar Codes sent.
Rtn Geoff advised that he will be sending out an
email regarding the 2018 VVR to VVR Committee

seeking volunteers from outside the club to help
with future events, This will be discussed in more
detail at a future meeting.
Hon Rtn Lewis advised that he will draw up a duty
roster. Next weeks duties will be shared by Rtns
Steve D and Peter P.
The President introduced Carl who delivered a
New Year message to the club.

club members to join with RC of Rotherham
Sitwell at their Social evening on 25th January at
Kimberworth Bowl.
Rtn Steve P advised that clubs in the district are
being asked whether they want to keep the current
paper directory system or change to a digital one.
There was a vote, and the clubs decision will be
relayed.
Rtn John H asked if the suggestion that former club
members were involved in the possibility of setting
up a satellite club in Sheffield had any truth in it.
Rtn Philip advised that he has had discussions with
senior District people and this seems to be without
foundation.
The rest of the meeting was given over to the
Millionaires Night organisation. A list of duties
were handed out to members who have volunteered
to staff the event. Other details regarding the
evening were outlined.
Once the business was concluded, the meeting
closed in the usual way.
22nd January – Normal Meeting
President Trevor welcomed members to the
meeting.
No visits to other clubs were reported, but Hon Rtn
Lewis along with Rtn Peter B attended former
member Eric Clarkson’s funeral in Filey, and met
Rotarians there. Greeting were passed and
received.
Hon Rtn Lewis also passed round a list asking for
expressions of interest in the proposed trip to
Whitby with a NYMR journey back to Pickering.
There were no Secretary’s Notices.
President Trevor expressed the Club’s Thanks to
Rtn Anne for the organisation of the Millionaires
Night – the feedback received from those attending
the event was very positive.
The Bowling night with RC of Rotherham Sitwell is
taking place on Thursday Night at Kimberworth –
9 people attending from Wortley – 18:45 for 19:00.
As a result of the event last Saturday, we are likely
to be asked to run a similar event as an upcoming
Rotary Charter Night.
Rtn John E advised the club regarding Rtn Roger
current health situation.
Millionaires Night review
Rtn Anne gave an outline of the financial figures so
far. The event was attended by 201 people (based
on payments received). 2 prizes were auctioned
and made over £350, and the raffle raised over
£1000. Full details will be available at next week’s
meeting, but it is likely that the funds raised will be
over £2000.
The surplus drinks were listed and purchased by
club members, and then other issues arising from
the event were discussed.
Any Other Business
Rtn Barrie asked if there was any news regarding
locations for the defibrillators - 1 has been sited at
Grenoside though not yet connected, and club
representatives are going to check whether there is
any recognition of Rotary contribution attached to
the one already installed and working at High
Green. This one has already been used.
Rtn Peter advised that he went to see Stuart from
Towsure, and asked if the club could write to him
thanking him for the equipment supplied.
The meeting then closed in the usual way.
29th January – Normal Meeting
Rtn Anne announced that the clear profit from the
Millionaires Night was just over £2,300.
Also, a letter was received from Rotherham Sitwell
Club thanking us for the entertaining event and
confirming their request for us to bring the event to
their Charter in September.
Malcolm Webb has contacted Trevor about their

Invite to RC of Rotherham Sitwell Social
Evening (Thanks to Rtn Philip for the info)
On Thursday 25th January Pres Trevor, Steve K, Rod, Steve D, Bob Jacob , Philip and Jacob’s son Francis took up Rotherham Sitwell’s invitation to join them for a social evenings ten pin bowling at Super Bowl Kimberworth there would have been about thirty bowlers in total. We occupied six lanes with Wortley members joining with Sitwell’s on each lane, everybody wanted Steve K in their team when he disclosed that in his younger days he played in a team !! There was a lot of friendly banter in the two games with Philip being the highest scorer in game one with 132 points. Rod’s team having finished earlier than the others and Rod needing to get away to finish packing his suitcase for his holiday the following day left the building assuming he had achieved the
highest score for the second game with 144 points only for a Sitwell member to have a late flourish and record a score of 155 points ! All in all it was a most enjoyable evening for a cost of £9.95 including a basket meal at the interval, we should organise our own evening in a few months’ time, I’m sure someone has said Bob would do this !!!
Miscellaneous
Old Comrade remembered
Rev Eric Clarkson
On Wednesday, 14th January 2018 I attended the
funeral of Rev. Eric .G. Clarkson (aged 95) at St.
Oswald's Church, Filey. Eric was a member of
Wortley Rotary Club from 1975 to 1986'.
He joined Rotary in 1968 at Blackburn. He was a
member of Filey Rotary Club, a past president and
a Paul Harris Fellow and just failed to achieve 50
years Rotary membership. As a young man he
served in the Royal Signals and was attached the
8th King's Royal Hussars as they landed on the
Normandy beaches on D day +3 - for this he was
awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honour in
2016.
In his retirement years in Filey, apart from Rotary.
he was active for the Royal British Legion, the
Scout Association and both he and his wife, Laura,
were members of the Police Committee. For his
service he was made an Honorary Citizen of the
town.
From a personal point of view, Eric was my mentor
in the early years of my ministry and, when he
moved on from Chapeltown to Crosspool I was
invited by this Club to become a member, taking
his place. In my capacity as Curate at Chapeltown
I was privileged to serve alongside him and learned
of his deep desire to meet and serve all the people in
their needs. He stood by the Rotary motto of
"Service above self" to the end of his life. I will
miss him.

Oaks Colliery Disaster Talk
I have booked Joan and Prof Mel Jones who are no
strangers to our club to give us a talk on a remarkably
interesting subject close to many hearts on 19th March
2018. This talk will explore evidence relating to the
Oaks Colliery disaster of 1866 (and the death of the
rescuer, Parkin Jeffcock of Cowley Manor and the
building of the new church at Mortomley in his
memory) the Westwood pit explosion, the Westwood
Riots etc.
Please invite Inner Wheel Ladies, Friends of
Rotary, wives, husbands, partners and friends - a night
of fellowship and friendship - make a diary entry! -

Snippets relayed to Santa on Christmas Eve by the youngsters
1. At one stop a little lad probably about six or
seven said to me ( Santa ) as I was leaning
over the side wishing everyone a happy
Christmas & handing out Kit Kats “ is that a
Rolex watch tha’s gor on”. Quite taken aback
as not many kids say anything other than thank
you, I said “ yes I think it is “. he replied “ I
knew Father Christmas wouldn’t be doing this
for nowt !”
2. On another occasion Anne who was dressed in
her Mother Christmas costume was asked by a
little girl “how old is Santa ?” Anne said “ I’m
not exactly sure but Santa is very very old” the
little girl replied “ not to worry I’ll Google it
when I get back home”!

REMEMBER THE 4-WAY TEST
1) Is it the TRUTH?
2) Is it fair to all concerned?
3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Who Am I
1. I was born on 4th May 1927 in Watford,
Hertfordshire, the youngest of 3 children. My father was a postman who retired to run a corner shop. My brother died when I was 6. I was educated at Schools in Watford. I began my theatrical career whilst a teenager in the local Amateur Dramatic Society playing small comic roles.
2. I did National Service in the Navy at the end of
WWII, before I briefly studied accountancy. I started to work on the radio in shows such as “Workers Playtime”, which led to TV appearances. I then joined the Whitehall Theatre Company run by Brian Rix appearing in a number of farces. I appeared with Bill Maynard at Butlin’s Holiday Camp at Skegness and also on TV.
3. During the early 1960’s, I joined forces with
Hugh Lloyd on TV in “Hugh and I”. We both appeared as Ugly Sisters in Pantomime at the London Palladium. I also released a novelty record on Parlophone in 1962, which received regular airplay on BBC Radio. As it was based on a schoolboy character, I dressed in a uniform to sing in when on TV. In 1968, I worked in a Sketch Show alongside an actress who then starred alongside me in the comedy “Happy Ever After” and its successor which was named after us both. We also had supporting roles in the film version of “Bless this House”. I also returned to the “Carry On film series, playing major roles in 6 of the following films including Cardinal Wolsey in “Carry On Henry” – ironically, I was a Lay Reader in real life.
4. In the early 1970’s, I played a memorable role
in a TV advert for “Curly Wurly”, again appearing dressed as a schoolboy. I repeated this performance on “The Good Old Days” TV show. As well as the ongoing TV show (“Terry and June”) which ran from 1979 to 1987, I voiced Penfold the Hamster in Dangermouse from 1981 to 1992. By now, I was suffering from Health issues – in 1979, I had an operation after suffering a Brain Haemorrhage, and suffered from creeping paralysis, wearing a neck brace even when on TV. In 1987, I suffered a Nervous Breakdown, and was also diagnose with cancer of the bladder.
5. I married twice, first in 1949 ending in 1957,
and again the same year, which ended when I died on 26th July 1994 in Witley in Surrey. I had 5 children – 1 son (who died when 1 year old) with my first wife, and 4 daughters with the second.

This Month’s Joke
THE BLONDE AND THE LORD
A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She'd seen many books on the subject, and finally getting all the necessary tools together, she made for the ice. After positioning her comfy footstool, she started to make a circular cut in the ice. Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" Startled, the blonde moved further down the ice, poured a thermos of cappuccino, and began to cut yet another hole. Again from the heavens the voice bellowed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" The blonde, now worried, moved away, clear down to the opposite end of the ice. She set up her stool once more and tried again to cut her hole. The voice came once more, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" She stopped, looked skyward! and said, "IS THAT YOU LORD?" The voice replied, "NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE HOCKEY RINK!"
