Minnesota Greenkeepers MeetBY L. J. FESER

THE annual meeting ofthe Minnesota Green-keepers Associa tion was

held at the Y. M. C. A. atMinneapolis on April 3,1930. After the boys hadtaken the weight off of aheavily-laden table and filledthe room with enough smoke

CHARLES ERICKSON to obstruct the view of achairman of a Green committee, they reviewedthe high spots of the Louisville con ven tion anddiscussed ways and means of avoiding bill col-lectors during the next eleven months.

If our green keepers can keep about threeholes ahead of those fellows, we are going tocharter the Graf Zeppelin and go to Columbusin style. In the meantime there is going to bea little contest known as the National Openover at Interlachen which will be staged thesecond week in July, and Erich Pahl has man-aged to arrange for a Greens Section meetingthe day before the hostilities begin.

The Association voted to extend a special

better the root system. This was ably demon-strated by Mr. Harrison last year during theU. S. G. A. Greens Section meeting at theChicago experimental turf garden, when heshowed the root system of grass cu t in differen tlengths. The first step to take by those whoha ve a mania for close cu tting is to raise themower a notch-the result will be a pronounc-ed improvement.

One more reason for poor fairways is lackof water when it is essential. The best fertilizedturf cannot be expected to stay green nor nearspring condition without water. Many of thenew courses are having a water system installedduring construction. Those contemplating awater system should investigate the new hose-les's systems which have been installed on sev-eral courses during the past two years. There isno question about the merit of such a system.

Fertilization of the fairways is very impor-tant and should be a yearly occurrence. I havefound that best results are obtained by fertiliz-ing early in the spring, before the grass hasstarted growth.

invitation to all the green keepers of the stateto attend this meeting, and we are anxious tohave the boys from all over the country payus a visit about that time, for we have a veryinteresting and instructive experimental plotat Interlachen that might pull a few stragglersaway from the Bobby Jones Gallery.

After the boys had taken care of the electionof officers by giving them all a chance to dobetter this year, they succeeded in puttingsomething over on Charlie Erickson, but wewill tell you about that later. The officerswho were given one more year to make goodin their official positions were Chas. Erickson,President, Erich Pahl, Secretary, Victor Lar-son, Treasurer, and the proverbial Vice-Presi-den tial side- track honor was given to thewriter, because that officer has nothing to do,and they consider your scribe a master of thatart.

Reports of the secretary and the treasurer in-dica ted that one was checking pretty closely onthe other, and if the conditions remain un-changed, our bondsmen will have an easy timethis year. Erich and Vic have demonstratedtheir ability to keep something besides greens.as their books proved, and they were given avote of thanks from the Association for thecareful work that they have done during thepast year.

T"his article is getting rather lengthy, but Ihave to tell you about Charlie Erickson. Ifany greenkeeper anywhere doesn't know Char-lie, then they have never heard of MinikahdaClub, for Charlie found Minikahda away backin the' 90s, very much like Pharaoh's daughterfound Moses, in a cradle among the rushes. andunlike the daughter, Charlie brought the youngMinikahda up to its present maturity.

But Mr. Erickson must have found a foun-tain of youth hidden away at his club, for heis just as young and enthusiastic as he wasthirty years ago, and this youngster has beenour president since we organized our associa-tion, and the boys think that he is quite somepresident. So they presented a beautiful mon-umen tal inkstand and desk pen to the' 'VeteranGreenkeeper of Minnesota", and he was moresurprised than he was the time that his chair-man found a dandelion on his 13th green, and-far more pleased.

Of particular importance is thefact that t his mower has thefamous quicR-detachable .. drop-out" reel and bed pia t e un i tpioneered by Cooper. Both rollerand reel are chain driven and thelatter can be operated in reversefor self-sharpening. Add i t ion alinvestment in a transport cart forthis mower is unnecessary.

To maintain perfect greens as demanded by present-day golfers, perfect: cutting of the grass, frequent rollingof the turf, aerating of the soil, brushing in top dressingand brushing off worm casts and other refuse, are neces-sary operations which require considerable care if thesurface of the green is not to be injured. The ever-increasing popularity of the Cooper Putting Green Moweris due to the fact: that it eliminates manual labor fromgreenkeeping and under its own power performs thesevarious operations efficiently and quickly.

The high-speed, seven-blade reel trims the turf to per-fection; the smooth sectional aluminum roller with differential actionfor easy turning, supplies traction and provides with each cutting thatgentle rolling action that levels without: packing; finger t:ip control andindependent operation of blade reel and traction roller make the mowerextremely easy to handle. The light: but strong steel and aluminum alloyconstruction, Briggs (, Stratton motor and grease packed gears with balland roller bearings throughout are Cooper features that: insure longerlife and trouble free service.

CHAPTER II-Designing the Course

DESIGNING a golf course has only oneobject-to assist Nature in producing themost satisfactory golf course under the

limitations imposed by the site and the finan-cial resources of the club. The purpose of golfcourse architecture is not so much to remodelthe terrain as to cooper a te to the fu llest ex-tent with Nature.

Nature is the Great Architect. The perfectsymmetry and harmony of color and propor-tion which her handiwork reveals, results innatural beauty which can only be imitated bytrue artistic vision.

The most satisfactory golf course design isone which cooperates with Nature to producean arrangement of holes, which will prove a
