Safety Alert!Back To School Accident

Prevention

In spring we talked about the excitement of ending the school year and how looking forward to the summer months has an eff ect on everyone. We said:• Closing out the school year

brings on an increase of reported accidents.

• Most of these accidents can be attributed to the hazard of hurry. The hazard of hurry isn’t so much physical as it is mental.

• In the rush to get everything done, we forget to think about what we are doing and how to do it safely. the result is an accident.

Almost to the letter, the same safety issues apply for back to school. One of the specifi c concerns is that school employees get in a hurry and try to substitute stools, chairs, tables, desks etc. for a step ladder. When a school employee stands on a stool or table the results are inevitable and we should not expect anything but a fall with injury. As I read the fi rst report describing a recent severe injury due to a school employee standing on a table that collapsed, I couldn’t think anything other than this is exactly what we can expect when an employee uses bad judgement like this. In this case the bad judgement will probably cost in excess of $100,000. Stools, tables, chairs, desks etc. are never an acceptable substitute for a step ladder.

As employees return to start a new school year, I would encourage communicating to each individual the importance of not substituting anything for a step ladder.

As we have said many times before, if employees will think about what they are going to do, and how to do it safely, it will not slow them down. They can think a zillion times faster than they can move, and that mental safety prepartation pretty much guarantees that they can begin a new school year accident and injury free. Individual responsibility is critical to safety success.
