Got More Questions? Each week, we will strive to answer some of the questions asked that we will not be able to address in our “Got Questions?” sermon series.

Questions on Women in the Bible: “Who are the great women of the Bible, and how do they relate to our lives today?” and “Did Adam have two wives?”

Radical Hospitality at Oak Hill UMC: A desire to invite, welcome, receive, and care for those who are strangers so that they find a

spiritual home and discover for themselves the unending richness of life in Christ.

Despite there being relatively few women highlighted and named in the Bible, there are still more than can be covered in a single sermon or brief newsletter article. Just a few of the notable women in the Old Testament include Deborah, a respected judge over the people of Israel; Rahab, a Canaanite woman of the night who saved the Hebrew spies in Jericho and became part of Jesus’ own lineage; Esther, an influential queen who risked her life to save her people; and Ruth, a Moabite woman who remained faithful to her mother-in-law after they were both widowed. This is clearly not a complete list, but each of these women is recorded on account of her courage, integrity, and persistence in adversity. Generally speaking, for a woman’s name and story to be recorded in the Bible, she must have ei-ther done something great (though not always something good), or been part of a greater family story. They lived in very different times, but we can learn a lot from these women whose conviction and strength overcame their patriarchal and societal restraints. As for Adam’s marital status, we just know of Eve, but who knows what happened after they left the garden and went East of Eden.

Help Children Get Ready for SchoolOak Hill UMC is once again partnering with Foundation Communities to provide backpacks and school supplies for children in our neighborhood and throughout the Austin area.

Our donations first go to help children at Live Oak Trails and Southwest Trails housing complexes off Texas Highway 71, then to the general drive for Foundation Communities. OHUMC was so generous last year — 75 filled backpacks, 45 empty ones, plus additional supplies — that we met the needs for our immediate neighbors with extras for other children in Austin.

OHUMC will be accepting donations July 15-22. You can drop off backpacks and/or supplies in the foyer of Fellowship Hall. Contact David Matustik at [email protected] or 512-971-8418 for more information.

Backpacks and supplies are requested for elementary-age children (kindergarten-fifth grades). The supply list includes:

• Glue (white, liquid, 8 oz.)• Supply box• Pencils, No. 2• Crayons and markers• Scissors (round or regular point)• Wire-bound notebooks• Erasers• Notebook paper• Ballpoint pens (black/blue)• Rulers (12-inch)• Dividers for binders

Foundation Communities is a local nonprofit providing first-class, affordable homes and support for thousands of low-income families and individuals empowering them with the tools they need to succeed. OHUMC has developed a partnership with Foundation Commu-nities, establishing a children’s library at Live Oak Trails, as well as sponsoring an Easter egg hunt the past two years.

United Methodist Men Lead Off “Dump the Debt” CampaignThe United Methodist Men’s tasty BBQ lunch sale raised more than $1,500 to help liquidate our church’s existing debt (currently $2,735,000 — yikes!). It may seem like $1,500 is just a drop in the bucket, but a lot of little contributions like the UMM’s can add up quickly and make a big dent in that intimidating debt balance. Let’s all make a “little” contribution this Sunday and start watching that debt shrink!

Seven Class Focuses on Awkward Conversations 11:15 a.m. Sundays Room A102, Adult Education BuildingThe Seven Class is studying The Art of Awkward Conversation by Melissa Collier Gepford through the end of July.

Awkward conversations. We’ve all had them, and most of us cringe just thinking about them. Whether it’s politics or family or social media, conversations can go south quickly. Thankfully, the Bible has something to say about this. Jesus found himself in quite a few awkward conversations, so we can learn how to navigate them with grace and humility by studying Jesus’ tactics. So, come on, let’s talk.
