Pastor’s Letter Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This October we join Lutherans around the world in commemorating the 500th anniversary of the
Reformation. It was October 31, 1517 that Martin Luther, a monk and pastor, posted his “95
Theses” in Wittenberg, Germany. He intended to start a debate, hoping to provoke change in the
church to which he had dedicated his life.
What he actually started was so much more. The debate over indulgences—over how –split the
church, and began the turbulent period of the Protestant Reformation. The divide between
Roman Catholic and Protestant has led to wars, to divisions in families, and to much heartache
over the centuries.
As we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we also celebrate that we have
come to new and renewed understandings of our Catholic brothers and sisters. Catholics and
Lutherans around the world are marking this anniversary together, as Pope Francis and Bishop
Younan of the Lutheran World Federation did in Sweden. We are closer today than we have
been in the past 500 years.
As we remember this important anniversary, we also remember that the act of reformation did
not start with Martin Luther and it did not end with him, either. The Reformation continues when
we seek ways to help the church live up to the ideals of the Gospel. The Reformation continues
when God’s love comes to us—unbidden, unearned—and changes us.
As we commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, I invite you to a few events:
“From Conflict to Communion: Together in Hope”—Join Lutheran and Roman Catholic
theologians, including the president of Villanova University for an ecumenical seminar
and worship—especially focused on lay people. October 21, Trinity Lutheran Church,
Lansdale. Register: community.ministrylink.org/togetherinhope
Reformation Vespers Service—St. John Lutheran Church, Blue Bell, featuring the St.
John’s and St. Paul’s choirs and orchestra. October 29, 7:30-9:00
St. Paul’s Reformation worship will be one service at 9:30, on October 29th. As we commemorate
this important anniversary, may we continue to re-form as the church, to be the body of Christ,
broken for the sake of the world.
In Christ,
Pastor Laura

The Sunday school year has just begun!
We are looking for 2 additional
Sunday school teachers to teach
this year and someone to serve as a substitute.
Each class has 3 teachers, so the commitment is not
overbearing. Each week, one person prepares the lesson, one
person is the assistant, and one person is "off."
Also, there is no Sunday School on the first Sunday of every
month, so it's really only 3-4 Sundays a month.
Contact Melissa Krissinger at [email protected]
or 610-283-1004 or Mary Lynn Kennedy at
[email protected] or 610-761-7095
if you are interested in teaching!

We’ll be celebrating our Stephen Ministry
Program on Sunday, Oct. 15
Stephen Ministers will be helping with many of the
volunteer activities that day including coffee hour to answer
any questions you may have about the ministry.
Please plan to attend to thank these dedicated folks who
give so much to share God’s love with our members
For more information, please feel free to ask: Beth McElvenney, Hazel
Pelletreau, or Pastor Laura
What is Stephen Ministry?
Stephen Ministry is a system through which lay members of our church,
St. Paul’s are trained and organized to help provide Christian caregiving
to members of our congregation and community. This multiplies the
amount of caring ministry St. Paul’s can provide by giving us a whole
team of skilled caregivers who are equipped to bring Christ’s healing
love to people who are grieving, in crisis, or experiencing other stresses
in life.
Why Lay Ministry?
Stephen Ministry is based on the idea that all Christians are ministers.
The responsibility for passing on God’s love is for all Christian’s. God
has given us all gifts for this ministry. It’s these gifts along with training
that bring Christ’s love to people in need.
Why Stephen Ministry?
We have many needs for care in our congregation and community:
people experiencing divorce, grief, a terminal illness, loss of a job,
relocation, an empty nest, retirement, hospitalization, loneliness and
many other stresses or challenges. Often people with needs suffer
silently or do not request or receive the level of care they really need.
Stephen Ministry expands on the care St. Paul’s can offer by equipping
9
and organizing members to provide Christian care. This gives us a larger
pool of people with gifts, skills and calling to bring Christ’s love and
care to those who need it most.
Who Benefits from Stephen Ministry?
Everyone benefits from Stephen Ministry. Those receiving care from
Stephen Ministers benefit because they receive prayer and support
throughout the crisis they face. Stephen Ministers benefit through the
spiritual growth they experience from being involved in meaningful
ministry. Our pastor benefits because the caring ministry is expanded,
which supports and supplements her ongoing ministry of pastoral care.
Most of all you, as members of St. Paul’s will benefit from the
knowledge that special care is available to you should you need it. This
ministry makes St. Paul’s an even more caring place!

Women’s Dinner
When: Wednesday, October 18 at 6 pm
Where: St. Paul’s Fellowship Hall
In addition to food, fun and fellowship, we will be decorating clay bowls for the Social Ministry Committee’s Empty Bowls luncheon in January. The dinner will be catered and the cost is $20.00 per person and includes a bowl to decorate.
The Social Ministry’s mission for the last few years has been to increase awareness of food insecurity in our community and to contribute toward ending hunger in our world. The Committee’s projects include Aid for Friends, the Chick March for the ELCA Good Gifts program, the St. Paul’s community garden, the Rise Against Hunger Rally Day event, and the upcoming Empty Bowls luncheon. The Empty Bowls Project is an international grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight to end hunger.
The bowls decorated at the dinner on October 18th will be added to the bowls decorated by the children during VBS. On the day of the St. Paul’s Empty Bowls luncheon, guests will choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal, and the bowl, guests contribute a suggested monetary donation. One hundred percent of each meal's proceeds are devoted to hunger-fighting organizations.
We hope you will join us on Wednesday, October 18th for dinner and bowl decorating. All are welcome!
Please RSVP to the church office or Helene Roth at [email protected].
