World War II Timeline

Non aggression pact• The Soviet Union and

Germany signed the non aggression pact on August 23rd 1939. It was a agreement between Hitler and Stalin that during this war they wouldn’t fight. Hitler would come up with this because he didn’t want to fight a two front war which was a big reason they had lost the first war twenty years back. The agreement said that for Russia to stay out of the next possible war that was sure to come. Russia did so they stayed back and minded their own business.

Germany Invades Poland

• Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. The Germans used the blitzkrieg way to invade Poland. It was a fast attack and it was a success to the Germans. This started the war. It led to the non aggression pact.

Invasion of Russia

• June 22nd of 1941, Hitler breaks the non aggression pact by invading the soviets. This was a complete surprise to the Soviets something they had no idea about. The Germans sent three armies to attack four cities.

Pearl Harbor

• The attack on Pearl Harbor happened on December 7, 1941. The Japanese were the ones that attacked the harbor. It was in Hawaii. The first attack was at 7:53 a.m. The second attack was at 8:55 a.m. It was a surprise attack. The Japanese killed around 2,400 people during the attack. They destroyed most of the planes and the USS Arizona on Pearl Harbor. This event brought the United States to World War II and joining the Allies.

U.S. attacks Japan

• On April 18, 1942 the U.S. attacked Japan. This was the first attack on Japan by the U.S. It was called the Doolittle Raid. The B-25s that the U.S. flew dropped bombs on military targets, factories, and the Imperial Palace. Doolittle, the leader of the attack, became a hero for the victory of the attack.

Battle of Stalingrad• This battle took place August 19,

1942. Germany wanted to attack Russia again to get to the city of Stalingrad and capture it and cut off all the communications. This was far from the same results of the last invasion of Russia. This time they were strongly built and ready. Plus the Germans invaded them in the middle of winter and they were cold, sick and just not able to handle the conditions of the harsh winters on Russia. The Russians pushed back the Germans and they didn’t even get close to Stalingrad and it was a great stand for the Russians.

The invasion of Normandy• The Allies stormed the 5

beaches of Normandy France on June 6, 1944. This attack was also known as Disenbarcation Day or just D-Day. General Dwight Eisenhour called this operation and ordered 160,000 Americans for this attack. It was the largest air land sea attack in history. We forced the Germans back and we even went past to go for Berlin the capital of Germany. About 450,000 soldiers were killed in this invasion. It was a huge victory for the Allies.

Battle of the Bulge

• The Battle of the Bulge started December 16th 1944. It was yet another surprise attack by the Germans. Hitler wanted to put a Bulge in the Allie front line. It was a quick attack but shortly fell apart. It lasted a few months. It was the largest fought battle for Americans. The Germans lost 100,000 soldiers wile the Americans lost 81,000 men.

VE Day

• May 8, 1945 the Germans surrendered. This was known as the victory in Europe this was also known as VE Day. We had the Germans surrounded and the Germans officially surrendered. We got to send our troops home. We were proud of our performance. Then had to go take care of buisness in Japan.

VJ Day

• In august 15, 1945, the Japanese finally surrendered to the allies. The Japs were outnumbered and they had been bombed on several occasions by us. On august 14, the Emperor of Japan Hirohito gave in and by the 15th it was official. The end of the war was here.
