Governments Wage Total War

• Total War – Governments devoted all their resources to the war effort.

• Factories were switched over to produce goods and munitions for the war

• Anyone that could work was put to work

• Citizens were forced to ration items that were needed for the war

Nearing the End

• With 5.5 million casualties and rising civil unrest, Russia wanted to end its involvement

• November 1917, The Russian Revolution took place and Russia became the Soviet Union

• March 1918, Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk which ended the war between them.

Germany Focuses on the Western Front

• With the help of the U.S., the Allies were able to over power the tired and weakened Central Powers.

• The Bulgarians and Ottomans surrendered

• November 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm II stepped down and Germany became a republic

• Germany signed an armistice with the Allies which ended the war.
