Brazil will be looking to repeat their FIVB World League victory last year in Belgrade, Serbia when the competition reaches its climax in Cordoba, Argentina

The opening day of the 21st edition of the FIVB World League will begin on June 4, officially kicking off a mouth-watering season of international Vol-leyball.

The World League is seen as the premier annual international men’s Volleyball tournament and has been since its es-tablishment in 1990. This year 16 sides will battle it out in four pools across 43 cities worldwide for a place in the Final Round of the competition, set to take place in Cordoba, Argentina for the first time.Argentina has only previously hosted the Final Round once, in Mar del Plata 11 years ago in 1999 and they will have a lot to live up to if they want to repli-cate last year’s final in Belgrade, Serbia where 22,680 supporters saw the home side go down 3-2 to Brazil in an exhila-rating final.

“The FIVB World League has always been seen as a good indicator as to how teams perform on a regular basis, and this

year’s competition is likely to be elec-tric with sides grap-pling for momen-tum ahead of the FIVB Men’s World Championship later this year,” Mr. Theofanis Tsiokris, FIVB 2nd Execu-tive Vice-President and Sports Event Council President said. “This is a tour-nament all teams want to win and you seldom see less than 110% dedication on the court throughout the competition.”

“I have no doubt that this year’s edition of the FIVB World League will be another which grabs the attention of all sports fans,” FIVB World League Council Presi-dent Mr. Francesco Franchi added. “You

Venezuela initiates project to attract new talent

Following the end of the Venezuela U13 Boys’ and Girls’ Nation-al Championships, the Venezuela Volleyball Federation (FEVE) held a tournament designed

to recruit new Volleyball talent to potentially represent the country in future international events.

Carabobo won the boys’ competi-tion, which took place in Porlamar and Margarita Island, followed by Yaracuy and Miranda.

Meanwhile, Miranda picked up the girls’ title with Carabobo claiming second and Aragua La Guaira picking up third at their tournament in Vargas State.

According to the FEVE, the com-petitions’ participants will help form the bulk of the national teams that will participate in next year’s U14 Girls’ and U15 Boys’ South American Champion-ships, established at the South American Volleyball Federations’ 63rd Congress held last April in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Venezuela Volleyball Federation hopes their new development initiative will strengthen their youth programme in the coming years

One of the largest inter-national youth Volleyball competitions, the Lases Cup 2010, came to a close during May in Riga, Latvia. This year the Latvian Vol-leyball Federation, in col-

laboration with Rigas Piena Kombinats (Riga Milk Complex) and with the sup-

lases cup finishes in latvia

A total of 106 teams attended this year’s final in Riga, Latvia, a record for the tournament

port of the Riga City Council, organized the competition for the ninth time. During the past nine years the Lases Cup has become the largest and most popu-lar Volleyball competition for school teams in Latvia. A total of 66 teams par-ticipated in the first final, but this year a record-breaking number of 106 attended the last stage of the competition.

A total of 125 teams took part in the 2010 Mosöld Volleyball tourna-ment in Reykjavik, Iceland from May 13-15, a new record for the annual competition.

The competition is specifically de-signed for masters (age 30+) and be-gan 35 years ago as a small tourna-ment held by the Icelandic Volleyball Association.

This year’s tournament featured 17 more teams than in 2009 with 43 teams playing in the men’s divi-sion and 82 teams taking part in the women’s tournament.

Around 1’000 participants joined to-gether for the event plus many vol-unteers.

Additionally, all profits derived from the tournament are directly filitered back into the youth and the develop-ment of the sport in Iceland.
