We have had inquiries regarding new regions who want to
be recognized through the wsc as a region. we of the WSC Admini-
stration Committee and also the WSO, do not have either the authority
or sanction of the ·Fellowship to do this. For any re.gion formed
after last Mayts conference, they will Ii.ave to present th~s-e.lves
at the forthcoming Conference, where it is up to the Fellowship
to recognize and seat new regions at that time. What w.e would like
to recommend is that you send to the wsc Secretary·t at the following
address, a list of your regional officers, your RSR and RSR Alternate,
a map of the region , and you will be included on the mailing list,
so that you can recei•.re all pertinent information;.

to be incorporated into a reference book, as we have been receiving
many requests for assistance . These references will eventually be
filed at the wso, so that as requests come in, they will be sent
out information to help them in the formation of their own guidelines.
Any contributions to this reference file would be greatly appreciated.

WORLD POLICY COMMITTEE
REPORT
OCTOBER 1983
The Policy Committee is continuing to work on the project mandated
it at the 1983 World Service Conference: "to rewrite the servive
at?'\lcture !or approval at the WSC." Progress has been made in the
following areas:
The Organization o! the Policz Committee
A number o! NA members throughout the country have expreessed a
desire to serve the Policy Committee in a~ way possible. The
Committee has been able, therefore, to compile a resource list ot
concerned NA members who will be able to help in the various tasks
relating to the service structure project.
The Committee has not, however, been able to find a Treasurer.
I! arJ3 qualitied NA member would like to serve in this capacity,
please contact John l'arrell at (302)655-6598.
The Committee has also not been able to !ind any NA members in
countries outside the United States to assist in its work, although
it is veI7 anxious to do so.
Policy Newsletter
A Policy Committee Newsletter has proved to be tinanciall,y ~~
feasible in terms of the Committee's current budget ot 1200.
Policy Workshops
California--Jobn Parrell, Policy Chairperson, conducted a lengthJ'
and productive workshop in Los Angeles on 14 August.
11
•2-
The L.A. workshop concentrated largely on structue
chal18es at the area and regional levels and the rela
tion ot the WSO as non-profit corporation to the rest
ot the service structure.
New York--the workshop scheduled in New York in September was
cancelled.
Nashville--a Policy Workshop will be held at the Volunteer Region
Convention in Nashville, 24-27 November.
Texas--discussions are being held about the poesibilit;r ot a work
shop in Texas during Januar.r. Any ideas on this subject
would be appreciated~please contact John Farrell.
The Midwest--the Policy Committee would like to hold a workshop
somewhere in the Midwest. ArJ3 suggestions on this
subject should be made to John Farrell.
Policy Committee Meeting
There wi.11 ~so be a Policy Committee meeting in Nashville over
Thanksgiving. The purpose ot the meeting will be discuss the
mechanics ot implementing the service atruoture project, the
assignment of research and writing tasks tor the project, and
~e tir.ming-up ot the Committee's timetable. Regular Policy
Committee business Will also be discussed.
Input to the Policy Committee
All NA structure arms--the Board ot Trustees, the WSO Board, World
Committees,Regional Service Committees, Area Service Committees--
12
-3-
are urged to inform the Policy Committee ot aey ideas they have
concerning the role their service· ·uni ts plq in NA and what changes
in the service structure they wan~ : to see. The WSB is planning
a meeting to address these questions and the Policy Committee
hopes others will. meet as well.
And ot course, individual NA members are alwa.,-s invited to share
their ideas w1 th the Poliay Committee. THIS PROJECT CONCERNS THE
ENTIRE FELLOWSHIP.
Regional Policy Committees
A number ot regions have formed policy committees in the past tew

WSC-LITERATURE SUBCOMMITTEE
Fellowship Report
The biggest news from the literature committee is a mid-year service workshop we will be holding November 6th through 11th. It will be at the Neumann Conference Center in Jamison, Pennsylvania. We extend an invitation to all area and regional literature committee cl:lairmen as well as interested members who wish to attend. All of the literature completed this year will be reviewed and discussed at this workshop. We will obtain a group conscience of the literature committee on the material we feel is ready to send out to the fellowship for approval. Some of these pro-jects include : 'Living Clean, our step/tradition book, a newsletters handbook, our revised Literature Committee Handbook, the N. A. History, and a variety of new I. P. 's including The I.oner Group., P~ofessionals in N .A., To Our Parents, Welcome to N.A . . , To The Medical Profession, s·tay1ng Clean Thiough Trauma, and To The Gay Addict . Any member of ~!arcotics Anonymous is welcome to contribute input on any of these pieces. The deadline is October 30th, 1983. Send your input directly to Ginnis., Literature Committee chairperson and please do not wait urttil the last minute. Sending your input early will assure it is included in the conference agenda. Anyone wishing to obtain copies of the above-mentioned materials may do so by sending a check for $10 . 00 to the w.s.o. This covers the cost of printing and postage . The r.iterature Committee is desperately in need of funds to put on this workshop. We would heartily appreciate any donations from regions, areas, groups or members to aid us in this important endeavor.
The effort to translate our existing literature into foreign languages is corning along well. A very ambitious committee in Florida has completed the translation of our little white booklet as well as the original five pamphlets into braille. These will soon be available through the W.S . O. In addition, members and groups in France, Germany, Florida, San Diego and Kansas are working on translating some of our new I.P. 's into French, German, Mexican and C~ban Spanish.
An all-out effort has been made to contact all of the members who ha~e contributed their personal stories to the Literature Committee. Releases have been obtained from some members and those stories will appear in the next printing of our basic text . We still have not heard from the authors of :
One Third of my Life Hell-N-Back Early services The Gift of a Lifetime Institutional Story I Kept Coming Back It Won't Get 1'.ny ~\orse No Excuse for Lonliness Relapse & Return Sick & Tired at 18 It Wasn't Always Like This Long-Distance Recovery
Literature Committee Fellowship Report Page Two
In the interest of protecting the contri~uting members' anonymity their names have not been included in this listing. If anyone can assist the Lit. Committee in locating these members, we would greatly appreciate it . It would be a shame not to use these stories in our basic text, especially since they have already been approved by the fellowship. However, if we cannot obtain signed releases from the authors, we will have to forfeit these particular stories.
The Literature Committee has also been in the process of expanding and improving our filing system. As is common knowledge, the lit. committee is in possession of massive amounts of files . These include all of the original input and revised drafts of our basic text, as well as the original outlines and each draft of all of our I . P. 's. In addition, there is a lot of resource material which has been submitted by various members . A process was begun last year wherein the secretary/librarian of the WSC•Lit. Committee put the book files on microfiche. This makes the files more accessible due to_the minimum storage space required and less expensive means of transporting them. The Lit . Committee currently has all of the book and story files on microfiche. The Lit. committee will continue to hold the microfiche copies, while the actual . paper files will ce kept at the w.s.o. with the other N.A. archives . We feel this will address the issue of spend~ng large sums of money for transporting these files.
In the process of expanding and developing our resource files, we have been in contact with many of the newsletters around the country. We have requested written permission from them to use some of the articles they print dealing with recovery from addiction. The Lit. Committee has read through many articles and categorized them by topic . They have been added to our resource files . ~his will give us a readily-accessible wealth. of raw material from which to draw when we start on new projects. The Vice-Chairman of the I.it. Committee, Bud K. , has been attempting to contact members who have contributed material of a personal nature . Any material which can be identified as an individual's personal experience, must be accompanied by a signed release. If you have contributed any material to the lit. committee in the past, please contact Ginnis., or Bud K., to determine if a release form is necessary.
As a final piece of information, some of you may have been wondering why The Physician •·s Viewpoint I . P. which was approved at WSC-83 has not been available . At the conference, the Georgia RSR requested permission for the author to make certain grammatical changes in the material, which would not effect the content. This revised draft has subsequently been received by the Lit. Committee. It will be reviewed at our November workshop to determine if it needs to be approved again by the fellowship, or if we should just forward it on to the W.S.O. for printing and sales.

The WSC Finance Committee met on September l, 1983,
at the Vista International Hotel in New York City
at w.s.c. 13.
No input has, as yet, been received regarding the
proposed financial guidelines. The committee is in
agreement that all input will be finalized at the
Georgia Regional Convention (GRCNA III) in February
of 1984.
We noted in New York, a great deal of talk about a
"tax-free-number," for use in obtaining bulk-mailing
permits and charge-free checking accounts. The use
of this number has been, in the ma·in, not in strict Robin Heaton. Co-cllalrrieraon , cvn111iaPonoro1e1cer.eo.c11111l'JIOfSOnaccordance with Federal law. P.o. eoam Its usage tends to Sun v..ie,. CA 11352

accordance with our 7th tradition, that all groups,
areas, and regions discontinue the use of this number.
Let's stop looking for the softer, easier way and
show our gratitude by doing the extra needed to
serve. Pay the mailing costs and service charges
on checking accounts!

Dear Fellow Member,
The N.A. Way continues to move in a positive direction. but at a much slowci:
rate than any of us would have anticipated or wanted. The coordination and co-
operation between this sub-committee and w.s.o . is excellent, but some delays
have been cxpe!ienced. We apologize for this, and hope that your patience wi th
us wi 11 continue.. The July and AuguBt issues have been mailed within the past two
weeks or so. We are obviously not on schedule .
We have resolved our difficul ties in regard to type-setting and lay-out of
the magazine, and feel th3t the quality of style to which we were accustomed has
been returned.

The major difficulty this sub-committee is experiencing at present is a lack
of input from our members. We have a limited number of articles submitted for
inclusion in the October issue. If this situation should continue, we will con-

FELLOWSHIP REPORT f rom WSO, I nc .
WORLD SERVI E F I .
W.S.O. Inc. 8061 Vineland Ave.
Sun Valley, CA 91352-0622 213 /768.(,203
Since the last report, of the second edition of the Basic Text
arrived. Immediately those already purchased copies were mailed
out. Almost as qu ickly, new orders for the book arrived in ever
increasing numbers. At the time the book arrived from the
printer, there were slightly over 3,000 copies that had been
presold. During the thirty days the book bas been in stock over
4 . 600 •dditional copies have been sh i pped.
A subsequent printing of the c ur r ent edition has been ordered and
this next printing (also 10,000 copies) is expected from the
printer about November 20 . At the current sales rate there is
some possibility that WSO will again be out of books for a shor t
t i me.
The WSO Board and staff have a difficult problem with determining
what is a reasonable expected sales rate for the book. Because
there has not been sufficient time of experience from which to
draw on in determing a probable sales rate, always keeping enough
of the book on hand to satisify demand ~ill take time. There
has been sufficient and measured experience in the production
time and normal sales rate for the new pamphlets, so there is
little prospect of problem in that area again.
Similiarly with mo s t of the other items in the WSO inventory,
recent experience and close inventory monitoring has provided tbe
necessary learning so that shortages can, in the future be
avoided .
27
There has been a problem, however with the long awaited World
Directory of Meetings. The projected schedule established by the
Office Manager has proved impossible to follow precisely.
Although most of the revised input for the Directory wa s rece i ved
as requested, there were several areas with substantial numbers
of meeting that did not get their reivesed information back on
schedule. Additionally there was an unexpected delay in the
office reproduction of that data. The final draft wa s not sent
to the printer until after the first of October. This will mean
that the Directory will not be available until near the middle of
November. All those who have already sent money for the
Di rectory have been notified o f the delay.
During the last 120 days, as the office ~as begun to respond more
rapidly to the demands of the Fellowship, the inadequacy of the
s i ze of the existing office has become manafest.· Consequently
the Board and the Office Manager have been investigating possible
locations to which the office could move. After much time spent
we found an off i ce that really suits our nee~s for now and in the
future. The new location is 16155 Wyandotte St. Van Nuys, CA.
91406. Our new office consi s ts of about 4,300 square feet which
includes a large warehouse and some office space . This is i n a
good location which is easy to find. It has good access to the
freeways, it's also a newer building that we can all be proud of.
We · are looking forward to each and everyone of you visiting the
new office in the near future. We will be completely moved in by
November 5, 1983.
In an effort to improve the capacity of WSO to respond to the
growing needs of the Fellowship, some new equipment was obtained
at the direction of the Board. The first item has been the
purchase of a small office computer. This machine provides the
opportunity to accomplish many tasks with greater speed and
accuracy. This letter for instance was produced on the computer
with the aid of a word processing software package. Fairly soon
many of the primary . office activities will be recorded and
28
processed through the computer: inventory control, individual
ordering records, accounts receivable, routine and some special
document generation and production.
There has been a substantial increase in the "normal" sales level
for all items in the WSO inventory. Although the availability of
the book, by its'self, has increased the monthly gross ~ncome,
there has been an increase i n the regular purchase of most other
items. This increased bussiness level has necessitated the
increase in the number of employees to properly provide service.
There are nov three full time employees in addition to the Office
Manager , Bob Stone. Others may be added soon if demand continues
at the new level.
There has been a streghtening in the relationship of WSO to the
other service branches of the Fellowship. WSO has been making a
concentra~ed effort to provide assistance to the WSC and the
Board of Trustees. This trend will continue. There are a great
many services the staff of WSO can provide to the Fellowship that
will develop greater unity and growth. WSO is open to
suggestions from the Fellowship of areas where WSO talents and
skills can be of service.
Of great importance to the unity of the Fellowship has been the
increase in the communications within the Fellowship. The
NEWSLINE, produced by the Office Manager bas been an important
tool in providin2 informat i on to the Fellowship and also
creating the opportunity for dialogue about the problems WSO
encounters. The recent issue asking for input on policy
decisions that the WSO Board is concerned about is both an
example of the desire for communication and also a desire for
the input from the Fellowship.
Do not be mislead by the almost rosy picture painted by the
changes and i mprovements cited above about what is happening at
WSO. There are sill many problems to be overcome . A continuing
29
problem is arriving at a consistant production schedule and
routine for the publication of the NA WAY MAGA~INE. Every effort
has been extended by WSO to accommodate the expeditious
production and delivery of the magazine. But the very nature of
the separation of the editorial and production duties creates a
problem: the editorial work is done in the east and the
production, accounting and mail list duties are accomplished at
tb-e WSO office in California.
Additionally there appears to be a continuing difficulty
experienced by the NA WAY Editorial volunteers in getting
sufficient volume of stories and material that can be used in the
magazine. Robin B., principal editorial volunteer bas also
indicated some problems in a continuing review of material within
the NA WAY review committee.
As of the date of this letter for the Fellowship report, the text
for the September issue of the magazine has not been recieved at
the WSO for production. It will normally take about three weeks
from date of receipt until the finished product is in the mail.
For the September issue therefore, it will not ~e maile~ prior to
the middle or end of November. Although the shared
responsibilities that the WSO and the Volunteer editoral staff
have in the production of the magazine create a lack of central
control, the difusion can be lived with.
Robin B . and her committee are undoubetedly doing everything that
can be done to get the copy ready at the earliest possible date
each month. But the subscribers are beginning to become concerned
about getting their magazine on a regular schedule.
For the past two issues the magazine has been printed in the
east, after it was typeset by WSO in C4lifornia. In order to
speed production of future issues, the magazine will be printed
in the Los Angles area under the direct supervision of the Office Manager.
30
Another continuing problem bas been the difficulty of the need
for an IRS Tax Exemption number that can be used by groups,
areas, committees and regions for their banking purposes and for
the normal activites of the Fellowship at all levels. The 1 Board
had assigned to the Office Manager the duty of preparing a report
that can be distributed to the Fellow~hip and provide guidance
for . interim needs while the WSC and the WSC Policy Sub-Committee
along with the WSO develop a long range answer. That report has
not been prepared to date. It bas become difficult to provide
interim solutions that apply to each of the states across the
country. As a result of this there bas been some continued use
of the WSO number, as a last resort. We are not encouraging this
but felt the need to inform the Fellowship that there are
problems that have not been overcome. Bob Stone indicates the
report may be available in early November.
I again would like to tell the felowship what a great job I feel
Bob Stone and his current staff are doing . I really feel Bob
has been a God-send. I know that those of you that have been
dealing with him will agree that we should really be greatfu~ to
have him in charge of our off ice and to have such a dedicated
staff. I am really happy with our progress and all of your
support.
Bope to see you all very soon.
Sincerely ,

We welcome your suggestions and topics for future articles to be written.
According to the Temporary Working Guide to the Service Structure of Narcotics Anonymous , W.S.B . members are to work wi t h w.s.c. Sub-Committee, which we are currently doing. We are col..lecting input for the purpose of writing guidelines for the Board of Trustees , and are reviewing literat ure for possible violations of Traditions in "Living ·clean", "Clean and Serene", and the "Twelve by Twelve", being developed by the World Literature Sub-Committee.
We are attempting to take care of a back-log of correspondence and are trying to develop a better system for dealing with WSB correspondence and f iles.

TO THE FELLOWSHIP
"Anoriymi ty , Yours and Mine"
In our desire to give a better understanding of how the Traditions work, and their importance, we the Board of Trustees, wilY monthly try to elaborate and expand on questions most commonly asked on the Traditions.
We like many of you in the Fellowship have become increasingly concerned with the Eleventh and Twelth Tradition violations, which have been cropping up with increasing and alarming regularity.
We are a program of attraction, not promotion, and as we have grown more and more public ourselves, attracting more and more public figures, it is critical for their recovery and our own that we honor our traditions concerning anonymity. Unfortunately, public figures sell newspapers, magazines and obtain viewers for television programs. Members of the press can be quite unscrupulous · in persuing information regarding these people. We would caution the Fellowship in these dealings with the media, least violations of the Traditions result.
We, the WSB and our service organizations, have no control over the media. In our dealings with them we need to be careful of setting ourselves up as an authority regarding the Fellowship or acting as a spokesman for Narcotics Anonymous. A good rule of thumb is "When in doubt, don't say anything."
We need to be aware that each and every member of Narcotics Anonymous deserve recovery without notoriety . We need to continue to reach the addict who stilL suffers, which requires that we scruplously maintain our Eleventh and Twelth Traditions.
TRADITION ELEVEN
"Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of the press, radio and films."
TRADITION TWELVE
"Anonymity is the spiritual foundation 0£ all our Traditions, ever remindi~g us to place principles before personalities."
Yours in Service,
Board of Trustees

MINUTES OF THE WORLD CONVENTION MEETING OF TRE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Members in attendence: Mike B., Bo~ •• Sally E . , Bob B., B., Carl B., Dutch B., Sydney a., The meeting opened at a.m. There were 8 present , 4 absent, 3 having resigned. who have resigned are Jim N., James D., and David C.
Jack 11 : 20 Those
The first item of business was selection of a new Vice Chairman: Nominated were Jack B., and Bob B. Bob B. declined and Jack B . , was elected by acclama~ion.
Dilscussion then began wi th the matters of the WSO and related legal problems. The letter from the WSO brought the suggestion that the WSBT become incroporated if the WSO does in fact have significant legal prboelms with the IRS .
Carl B. explained the process and problems. The WSO 95 number should be used only by WSO and not by the Fellowship groups, regions, etc. Discussion continued among the Trustees and these other items of importance were discussed.
WSO is now making witholding from wages of employees~ a practice that was not being done before. A letter might oe sent to regions, groups, etc . , advising them to di~continue use of the WSO IRS number. It may be necessary for· regions or groups to obtain their own 95 (IRS) number. The WSO Manager is in the process of making a report for the fellowship that will outline the possible alternatives and making suggestions. That report will t•ke a considerable time to prepare because of its complexity.
Discussion drifted to the sale of WSO literature and books. At issue is the collection of sales tax that is due in California on all sales. It was suggested that the word "sale" be discontinued and that all transaction be considered '"contributions". In this manner whatever the contributor gave, the WSO would have to accept and not question the amount in exchange for the merchandise that was desired.
Discussion began on . the possibility of having space in the WSO NEWSLINE, for articles from the Trustees that would have wide importance in the Fellowship. Items such as discussion of Traditions would provide the opportunity to advise the Fellowship of the thinking of the Trustees on a specific issue. It was suggested that a article be on the issue of how to address violations by going through the chain of command and that Trustees answer using full names . There was disagrement in that some. 9f the trustees wanted to keep thing general rather than specific.
It was then M/S/C Mike/Bob : to have a Trustees section in the NEWSLINE devoted to issues that come before the WSBT . The Fellowship report can also contain these same articles.
Pql}owing discussion on how to get these articles done, it was M/S C Jack/Bo that WSBT should have a sub -c~mmittee to write input for the monthly WSO NESLlNE. The question then arose of who would serve on this committee . Sydney R., Bob B. and Bo S . were selected and other trustees can send sugcestions to them. Selection of topics will be left to the committee.

Material received for WSBT~reviewed. Article re:Cleveland NewsP.aper and football team and hospital controversy.
Bo/Jack Motion: Write a simple letter reaffirming the action taken by area LEGS. PASSED
. Dutch read letter from area in Iceland re: Literature ·& approval. Sally will write and recommend to policy committees for policy policy change.
Sydney read letter regarding NA Logo - Much discussion. Jack suggested that a message go out to the Fellowship that says we don't abuse the NA Logo for profiteering. Bob R. addressed this issue that the WSO is looking into it and will accept any input. Jack made a statement that convention committees should be the ones authorizing who's going to sell what and that anything being sold outside this area is not sanction.
Reviewed Literature: Living Clean, 12Xl2, Sally- Menibers read reviewed and gave input about tradition Tradition Violations only. Advise to WSC- Members did discuss what they did read so far.
Bo suggests that we be helpful but to send a letter that we'd rather wait to see a finished piece. Jack also agreed to wait until all input is entired to find tradition violations so as not to double the work. Sally suggests that we stay active through every phase of process. Everyone agreed.
Back to discussion of guidelines for Trustees re:Service Structure. Dutch read a written report and some questions.
Jack suggested we write some input to the Policy Committe re: Service Structure. Sydney set up a cornmitte to review guidelines for Service Structure for WSBT.
Dutch Motion: Moved a s above. Sydney seconded. Discussion carried.
Mike suggests that we get together here because we live so far apart .
35
Bo suggests break ing now a n d get ting together in a little. while to discu ss guidelines and get something on paper. Also she feels we 're not discussing some of the r eally i mpor tant issues .
Mike s uggests we break for lunch and meet l ater, specifically to Guidelines.
Break for lunch: 2:20 PM will resume 3:15 PM
Re- opened 3:45 PM
Floor opened to Rich from Scranton, PA. He addressed the WSBT about bei ng stumped on some traditions. ASC doesn't wnat to go to RSC and asked for imput on these issues:
1. Newsletters 2. About Tradition 9 3. Fundraising 4. Meetings that are not supporting service boards- or are
possibly violation traditions . S. Can Area Literature Committees approve literature until
WSC has final approval?
Bo- discussion on guidelines. Reconunended that we red line certain areas in t he guidelines as we see it- activate guidelines that are alre ady there . Ammended guidelines need to be inserted or deleted from present guidelines as adopted WSC "83 motion. Eliminate 4th & 5th paragraphs, Page 16 - TWSM Talks about standing committees but not the function of these standing conunittees.
Bo recommends we keep the paragraph re: standing committees and implement it rather than delete it completely. Sydney read some suggestions and also to define our purpose. It needs to be addressed and gone over at an extened period of time,. there is a need for the link to be brought together. Maybe a Truste es meeting or a Trustee conference. We don't want to get to bogged down with too much procedure.
Bob B. expressed difficulty in getting together for a weedend. Solution : is the greater nwnber of people, review material as best we can from copies here and collectively present as individuals to Jersey or Delaware and see if it agrees with existing material. Jack- if we do that we'll be in the same spot at the next WSC.
Discuss ion on conunittee to take care of this .
Dutch Motion: Forget deadline and get our act together to do this right. Suggests that 5 who live in California get together to address this . Jack- NSC finance NST getting together on an annual basis to be written in eventually. Bo- define standing sub-committee, to provide stabi lity and economy of action to WSC and NA as a whole. Same as WSC sub-conunittee .
36
Bob B. says they're not doing anything. WSBT will specify what they: do. We'll have a weekend workshop, those outside of Calif. will put in their input and we'll put it together sometine in January or February .. . More will be revealed.
Dutch- lets be united for something. Sally- doesn't feel it can be done before Policy Conference. Jack- Briefly went over major things that were discussed. Sally used Sydney's report as input Bo/Dutch Motion: For WSBT to send brief statements to leav e it to her discression to call a board meeting. draft thats passed 1 week to 10 days, have until Nov .
Sally and Prepare to do it.
Ther's a conference in Nashville, need input in 30 days.
Adjourned at 5:00 PM.

SUBJECT: SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT
As follow-up to the report included in the last FELLOWSHIP
REPORT, this supplemental report is presented to provide
knowledge of actions taken subsequent to that last report.
Upon the advice of a Committee member (Robert K., RSR, Volunteer
Region) and the WSO legal Counsel, the motion that is attached
was considered by the Board of Directors of the World Service
Office at their meeting of October 8, 1983. The motion was
fully discussed by the Board of Directors and then adopted.
The mot~on in effect acknowledges all of the acts that have
been performed by previous officers, directors, volunteers and
employees of WSO, Inc., that were legal acts, that there is
current knowledge of, and ratifies those actions as being
authorized by the Board of Directors of WSO, Inc. It does not
ratify any illegal act or any act that is not currently known .
The list of acts that this actually covers is relatively small
and all of them are related to using the acronym C.A.R.E.N.A
on the copyright applications of N.A. approved literature and
the N.A. Text. It also approves the filing and refiling of
the ·required notice (it is currently on file and valid until
July 1985) with the County of Los Angeles.
Adoption by the Board of Directors provides the protection to the Fellowship that was questioned and led to the formation of
this adhoc committee. If there are any questions, please call.
2 Motion for the Board of Directors :
The Board should adopt the following motion in order to clarify the relationship between the World Servi~e Office, Inc . , and the use of the acronym C.A.R.E.N.A.
M/S/C (Rehmar I Long ) The Board of Directors direct i.:l"lat a notice be filed with the County of Los Angeles to provide legal notification that the World Service Office, Inc. shall conduct business in the name of"C . A.R.E.N . A "(an acronym for ''care N. A., of to imply that Narcotics Anonymous cares), in additon to the Corporation continuing to conduct business under the name of the Corporation .
That this name shal be so registered with the County on a continuing basis, even if the use of the acronym is not used.
That the WSO, may from time to time use the acronym as the name of the "owner, author, or publisher" of literature and books and other publications of the Fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous that are prepared, printed, distri buted or owned by WSO as the agent of the Fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous.
That the Corporation does her~by acknowledge previous actions of the Corporation and its officers and employees to act in conformance with this motion and hereby ratify such actions as the Board currently has knowledge of as they represent the decision of the Board currently or in the past, at the time of such actions .
Adoption of this motion shall not be construed to restrict the future actions of the Board in the use of the acronym or to imply that the Board is required to continue use of the acronym .
