IIt’s over! By it, I’m referring to the 2008 Masters National Championships, our once-in-seven-years opportunity to stage a home game. To a Masters club, this is the biggie. It’s a lot of work for the committee and an opportunity for many more members to take part than the usual away team. About 240 NSWMA members participated, more than double the number on the usual interstate trips. The NSW team was four times the size of the next biggest team, Queensland, and we collected 473 medals as against the next best team’s 161. For the first time, online entries were taken and this was well supported, with more than 60 per cent of entries being done in this fashion. The local hotel and shuttle bus was another innovation that has set some of the other states thinking.

Many thanksI’d like to thank the organising committee for a tremendous effort over the past few months – people such as Garry Womsley, championship registrar, who found himself fielding up to 70 emails a day and many phone calls into the night. Nancy Lloyd, our treasurer, in addition to looking after the financial side, also put in a tremendous effort collating entries and entering them into the Meet Manager software. Simon Butler-White organised the medals, race bibs, T-shirts and volunteers’ outfits. Ranell

Hobson, a newcomer to the committee, but well known in sprinting ranks, together with husband Kip, organised the TAFE student volunteers and the massage students. This was a big improvement over our last attempt in 2001. Susan Newton and Janet Naylon organised such things as publicity, dinner tickets and programming.

Our Athletics NSW member, Andrew Matthews, gave up the entire Easter long weekend to managethe results side of the meet. Andrew was ably assistedby several Athletics NSW officials, who likewise gave up most or all of the weekend to make our meet a success. Being a part of the group that pulls off a challenge like this, is one of the most rewarding aspects of being on a committee. It was a pleasure to work with all these people.

Staging the Nationals is a good opportunity to get more people involved in Masters athletics and I was pleased to see 2000 Olympian Karyne Di Marco join the club just in time for the championships – she broke three Australian records: in the W30 hammer, heavy weight and weight pentathlon. She joins our other 2000 Olympian, Tatiana Sudarikova, in the women’s throws. Atlanta Olympic sprint qualifier Andrew Richardson also joined the club and made a return to the track after many years’ absence.

Lastly, one of the most exciting events in the meet was the attempt at the W35 4x100m world record by a composite team comprising three NSW athletes – Ranell Hobson, Gianna Mogentale and Kylie Strong – plus Queenslander Julie Brims. They got it, taking about nine tenths of a second off the old record. Three of the four women are in their 40s, making the effort even more impressive. They averaged just under 12 seconds per leg.

World Indoors 2008While the Nationals was on, a small band of NSWMA members competed at the World Indoor Masters Championship in France. Prior to these championships, only a couple of our members had attended, but that number has gone up considerably now, with several state and Australian indoor records being established. See our feature on page 14.

More trophiesYour committee has expanded and better organised the range of trophies on offer for this past season. Despite the fact that men outnumber women by about three to one in the club, there were actually more trophies for women than men. We're also going to have a proper presentation event now, instead of incorporating it with the AGM. See page 25 for more information and

check the website if you have internet access. Also, don’t forget our Merit Award scheme. Check the website for the standards – you might have earned one.

AGM aheadOur AGM will be held in June. To be effective, the committee needs a good mix of ages and members of both sexes. People come and go on the committee and therefore there needs to be fresh input. Being on the committee is an excellent way to meet more people in the club and have a say in what goes on.

I’ve been on the committee for 15 years and it’s time to let someone else have a go. The 2008/9 season will be my last as President. I’d be happy for someone to take over now at the 2008 AGM, but the AGM in 2009 will be it for me.

Why am I mentioning this now? We don’t want to be in the situation we had back in about 1994, where people were running around the night before the AGM trying to press someone into service.

Next year will be another big one for Masters athletes, with the WMA World Championships in Finland in July and the World Masters Games in Sydney in October. There’s never been a better time to get out the training gear and hit the track or field.

Best wishes,Mark Johnston

The Waratah | the presidential address

IIT WAS NSW’s turn to host this year’s national championships, for the first time since 2001, with 480 athletes from all over Australia – and some from New Zealand – travelling to Blacktown Olympic Park over Easterto compete.

After a week of brilliant sunshine leading up to the long weekend, heavy rain marred the first two days of competition, fining up on the last two days.

The 2008 championships saw some great interstate rivalries resumed – think Gianna Mogentale vs Queenland’s Julie Brims in the sprints; South Australia’s Voitek Klimiuk duelling with Andrew Atkinson-Howatt and Lajos Joni in the M50 weight pentathlon; and 2000 Olympian Karyne Di Marco, a newcomer to Masters competition, tossing the hammer 56.30m, despite the rain, for a sensational new W30 Australian record – only 3m ahead of WA thrower Byrony Glass. Karyne also set two more Australian records during the championships –in the weight throw and the weight pentathlon.

The crowd-pleasing Champion of Champions 100m, a handicap race between the 10 best sprinters of all age groups at the championships, as determined by WMA age-graded percentages, saw NSW sprinters Gianna Mogentale (W40) and Neville McIntyre (M65) triumph in exciting races.

TWO WORLD RECORDSHighlights for the crowd included two world records – the first to WA’s David Carr in the M75 2000m steeplechase in a time of

8.56.59 and the second to a composite 4 x 100m relay quartet of NSW flyers Ranell Hobson, Kylie Strong and Gianna Mogentale, who combined with Queenslander Julie Brims to set a new W35 mark of 47.74 seconds, clipping nine tenths of a second from the record set by a French team, set way back in 1989 in Eugene, Oregon.

The women were ecstatic to learn their smooth baton changes and determination had eclipsed the nearly 20-year-old mark, bounding about and posing for photographs for several minutes after their record-breaking run.

Ranell tells how the world record attempt was planned and executed.

"A few months after the 2007 Nationals in Tasmania, I was playing around on the internet and stumbled upon the record for the 4x100m. When I saw that the French had the record at 48.63, I immediately thought about how we could break it at the Nationals in Sydney."

After some baton practice on the day before the race, the team were quitely confident.

"Sunday afternoon came around and we ran in the men's 170+ relay. Wilma Perkins felt this would be the best event, as the men would pull us out.

"Julie and I had run a few relays together at Pan Pacs and other meets and we knew that we would run a great one-two leg. I wasn’t nervous, but

I was excited. I knew we just needed to get around safely. My start was amazing – I got out of the blocks hard and fast and had a fabulous acceleration, running on to Julie I said a quick prayer for the baton pass to be a good one and my prayers were answered swiftly.

"We had a team of supporters in the crowd with stopwatches and when Gianna crossed the line, they all started rejoicing. We didn't know the time, but when we learned that we'd clocked 47.74, we all screamed and ran to each other, hugging and embracing. It was a great moment for everyone and we soaked up the joy of what we had achieved together.

"Hopefully, we bought some joy to those who watched the event also. Track and field can be a lonely sport, but relays bring together even the most fiercest of competitors in friendship and camaraderie. That is why I love relays – these girls are my friends and teammates and I'll always be grateful for that."

Records tumble at NatsA world relay record, a brace of Australian records and several State recordswere highlights of the 2008 AMA Nationals held at Blacktown Olympic Park.

Volunteers a hitat BlacktownJust a quick word about the volunteers at the 2008 Nationals at Blacktown Olympic Park. You know, those “targets” wearing a bright-red shirt and a light-blue cap − the oneswho were there at the start of theday and at the fi nish of the day, whoraked your sandpits, retrieved yourjavelins/discuses/shots/hammers/car keys, collected your meals, watered your thirst and adjustedyour hurdles (and re-adjusted and readjusted and so on…).

They had a thoroughly enjoyabletime looking after you all! Many ofthem are keen to volunteer for future Masters meets, one even wants to travel to Adelaide next year for the next Nationals and plans to organise a trip around it. One of my nephews wants to be a starter in the future, although that could be due to an unhealthy love of guns, or Richard, or both…

So, thanks to all the competitorsfor putting on a wonderful show forthe volunteers team. I hope you hadas good a time as they did.

A special thank you to Simon Butler-White for the fantastic T-shirts and caps. Simon also co-ordinated the design of the medals, race bibs, program and other merchandise, which was a great success.

So, enjoy the winter layoff, getthose dodgy groins/hammies/anklesreplaced with bionics and see youin Adelaide in 2009.

FFrom the early days of our organising committee meetings, it was obvious that I had the experience to organise the cross-country course, so the event and the venue became my baby. It was also clear that there wasn’t really an established venue in the Blacktown area so I had to look further afield. I needed a course that was predominantly grass and was sufficiently challenging. It soon became apparent that Upjohn Park at Dundas was our best choice. It’s a 2km course, so both races would consist of four 2km loops to make up the distance of 8km.

Parramatta Council was helpful throughout and helped me every step of the way. As the days got closer, I started to worry that I hadn’t thought of something that was going to affect the day. The night before, I tossed and turned thinking of the next day.

Heavy rainWhen the day dawned with grey skies and heavy rain, I thought my worst nightmares were about to come true. There’s little cover at Upjohn Park, so it was going to be uncomfortable if it rained for long periods. Fortunately, the weather started to improve and it soon became warm and humid.

On arrival at the venue,I was confronted by my next hurdle: the gates to the car park were supposed to be unlocked by the ranger at 7amm but he hadn’t turned up! Luckily, a worker at the pharmaceutical company next door allowed everybody to

park in their grounds. The ranger finally turned up at 8.30am and duly opened the gates. While things weren’t exactly going to plan, alternatives were soon found and we carried on regardless.

A couple of days before the event, I was told that the grass hadn’t been mowed and was long in some areas.I confided in some of my distance-running friends about the long grass and they all told me not to worry, as it is cross-country, after all.

On closer inspection while marking out the course, it was revealed that the council had mowed most of the course within the last week but due

to our hot and humid conditions, it had started growing again.

By the time we had marked out the course, the athletes had started to arrive for the first race, which consisted of women of all ages and the 60+ men. To my relief, the race went off without a hitch and no one got lost. Greta Truscott won the race and led throughout in a great performance.

After walking the 2km loop twice – the first time marking out the course and the second time providing refreshments for our marshals – it was then my turn to run in the second

race (30-59). Unfortunately, a combination of two previous distance races, the 4km walk and feeling drained from worrying about the day, I probably didn’t run as well as I would have liked but I still picked up a silver medal. My longtime running friend, Jamie Harrison, was a worthy winner of my age group and also of the race itself.

Club supportThe success of the day wouldn’t have been possible without the help of several members of my club, Girraween, who gave their day off to help marshall (David Perry, Michael Christie, Nick Hanna, Terry Rose, Vince Adams, Joe Butler and Roger Mar). David McEwan (Hills) was also a great help. David Archbold (UTS Norths) was a real tower of strength in marking out the course and setting up on the day, while our two ANSW officials, Susan Newton and Stan Stark, were a huge help.

My wife, Cheri, was another huge support. The feedback from the athletes was encouraging, with the worst comment being that the course was “too hard”. Then again, a Nationals isn’t meant to be easy, so I guess the comment was a compliment! Being on the organising

committee certainly added to my experience in different aspects of athletics, which will stand me in good stead in the future if there ever comesa time when I can’t compete any longer. Being part of making it work will always be a fond memory. TW

TTHE THIRD World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships were held at the Stadium Jean-Pellez in Clermont-Ferrand from March 17-22.

Initially, it was quite a weird sensation to run at an angle on the six-lane 200m banked track, but after the first few steps, it’s just running! Down the centre was an eight-lane 60m track – the run-off takes you up the banking and into crash mats. There were additional 60m lanes and jumps areas on both sides and a perimeter track. It was wall-to-wall mondo! Retractable seating covered the additional lanes on one side to accommodate the 3000-plus competitors.

Inside, the atmosphere was hot, dry and very loud. The announcement before every race was “Attention, shhhhhhhh…” Outside, it was -3 degrees on the coldest morning, there were snow flurries for the throwers, heavier snow for the half- marathon and the wind was icy.

The warm-up area was an outdoor tartan track and several football or an indoor basketball courts that had carpet on one half while the other half was covered in gym mats with two portable throws circles for the shot-put and weight throw. If you were lucky, it was possible to warm up in the stadium; you just had to work the system of volunteer guards!

The normal call-room routine was in place: chaotic on day one, a free-for-all on day two and, by day three, the officials had it under control! There were issues in the first few days with outdoor progressions being used and some results being “lost”.

The F40 60m was doomed from the start. Entry numbers warranted three rounds, but only two were scheduled, though a third round was added to the program available on the website and the notice boards. Day one – five heats were conducted and the three Aussies progressed to the next round later that day. There were three semis – one Aussie progressed automatically, one assumed progression after seeing the times and the other was happy with her achievements. The results weren’t posted until after the

final. At final time on day two, the 10 girls who thought they might be in, warmed up and reported to the call room. Meanwhile, one of the Aussie team managers kept pushing for the start list at TIC. Just minutes before we left the call room, we got the list – seven of the 10 werein, while the eighth lady was a DNS.

For the Aussies, the rest of the competition progressed smoothly. Here is an overview of the NSW results – the detailed results have been supplied for the NSWMA website. For details of all the Aussies, a full report and results have been supplied for the AMA website.

SILVER BULLETSA highlight was a silver medal and inaugural Australian record to the UTS Norths quartet of Jacqualine Bezuidenhout, Caroline Layt, Janet Naylon and Marie Kay in the F40 4x200m relay. The team ran 1:49.98. France was first in 1:49.20 and Germany third in 1:50.62.

Jacqualine Bezuidenhout and Janet Naylon exchanged the F40 60m and 200m National records several times through the course of multiple rounds in both events. They both reached the 60m final, with Jackie finishing fifth and Janet sixth. In the 200m, both finished second in their heats and fourth in their semi-finals, to be ranked seventh (Jackie) and eighth (Janet) overall. In the long jump, Jackie finished with a PB in 10th and while Janet was disappointed with 11th place, Jackie also contested the 60m hurdles.

Peter Crombie (M60) had a less than perfect trip to France and, after a slow start in the 60m, went on to win silver medals in the 200m and 400m.

Joanne Duncan (F45) competed in her first half marathon and saw snow falling for the first time prior to the race. She finished within her target time.

Caroline Layt (F40) came eighth and established the inaugural Australian indoor record in the heavy weight throw (11.22m) and broke the existing record in the shot put (9.58m) to come 11th. She competed outdoors in snow flurries for

8th in the hammer and 12th in discus. Caroline also contested the 60m, running a season’s best in the heats to progress to the semi-finals.

Tony Morphis (M55) competed for Greece in the 400m and 800m and reached the latter final, but didn’t know he was in it.

Stuart Paterson (M50) competed in the 200m to experience speed on the bend and then his favourites – the 800m and 1500m. He established inaugural Australian indoor records in each and was also in the record-setting 4x200m team. His best was 10th in the 1500m final (4:41.99). Stuart assisted Noreen Parrish with the team manager role and his experience as a technical official was most valuable.

Steve McGugan (M55) established an inaugural Australian indoor record in the heats of the 60m hurdles, but a slight adductor injury hampered his efforts in the final, where he came eighth.

Janet organised our extremely popular team T-shirts through Margaret Beardslee. We were instantly recognisable in the crowd and wished we’d bought two or three, such was the demand for swaps!

Away from the track, we managed to wander through the town, which dates to medieval times. The cathedral and other monuments are all black, having being built with basalt from the surrounding 80-plus volcanoes. One church even has a black Madonna statue among its artworks.

We had several team get-togethers – the first night we met at the Australian Pub, but it was a rip-off. Later in the week, some Aussies met at Le Crêpiere Grille 1513 for a terrific meal of crêpes. The final night saw the team gather at Pizza Tino and some went onto the British team party in an Irish pub called Café Pascal!

Afterwards, a couple stayed in Clermont-Ferrand to explore, sample the chocolatiers and patisseries, taste local cheeses and drink very good champagne. Some of the group spent time in Paris beforehand, while others did Paris afterwards, and a small group of interstaters went on to the US Masters Nationals in Boston. TW

Multi-eventer Albert Gay wins a major AMA award, NSW athletes set new world, Australian and state records – and a look at the Masters merit awards.

ALBERT’S AN ACECongratulations to Campbelltown’s Albert Gay (M65), who was named AMA Multi-Event Athlete of the Year at the awards ceremony during the 2008 National Championships at Blacktown.

The official presentation read: “Our recipient has been a quiet achiever who has enjoyed winning success in the multi events at AMA championships. In 2007, he competed in Riccione, where he maintained consistently high performances that resulted in him going into the last event of the decathlon in fourth place, 453 points behind third. Undaunted by this huge points deficit, he set about running a 1500 metres that would at least narrow the gap on third place and allow him to maintain his fourth position and a very respectable result. Multi events allow athletes to build up good rapport with fellow competitors, so our recipient attended the presentations to support the medallists. Much tohis surprise, he found that his 1500m points had not only closed the gap to third place, but had elevated him to a bronze medal.”

HAVE YOU WON A MERIT AWARD?What are merit awards? The merit award is a small trophy given by NSWMA in recognition of reaching a certain standard of performance in an event. It indicates that you are a skilled performer in that event and is made irrespective of whether you have ever won the event in competition or set a record. The award is based on a score of 600 points on the World Masters Athletics multi-event scoring tables. Similar schemes operate in other clubs and countries, notably in US Masters Track and Field. How do I know if I canclaim a merit award? You can check whether you meet the standard by going to the NSWMA website, www.nswmastersathletics.org.au, and clicking on the ‘Awards’ link on the home page. A table of the standards required to claim a merit award is published there. If you wish to claim an award, you must provide evidence of the performance in bona fide competition on a properly certified competition arena. For performances in State/National/World Titles, Masters Games or ANSW competitions, it’s sufficient to refer us to the published results, otherwise you may need a copy of the result sheet. Note: only one award can be claimed per event per age group.● For more information, contact the NSWMA Records and Awards Officer, Jim McGrath, at [email protected]

AAT THE AGM, club annual reports will be presented and all positions on the committee declared vacant. Nominations are hereby called for the following positions: ● President, ● Vice-presidents (two), ● Honorary Secretary● Honorary Treasurer, ● Registrar ● Journal (The Waratah) editor● Records & awards offi cer● Representatives for Track, Field, Distance events and Walks.

The AGM is the place to raise and discuss issues related to the running of the club. Only fi nancial members can stand for positions or vote on matters before the meeting.

Please nominate in writing, on hard copy or by email, at least 14 days before the meeting. If there are no nominations in writing for a position, nominations can be taken from the fl oor.

Three proposals have been made to amend the NSWMA constitution, They are:1. Under article 3, Membership, it's proposed that the following clause be amended:(d) (i) Disputes between members (in their capacity as members) of the Association, and disputes between members and the Association, are to be referred to a community justice centre for mediation in accordance with the Community Justice Centres Act 1983.(ii) At least 7 days before a mediation session is to commence, the parties are to exchange statements of the issues that are in dispute between them and supply copies to the mediator.

The rationale for proposing the amendment is that, rare though they are, disputes between members can arise and the club needs some mechanism spelled out for dealing with such situations.

2. Under article 4, Committee, it's proposed that the following clause be added:c) (i) The Association may by resolution in a general meeting, remove any member of the committee from the offi ce of committee member before the expiration of the member’s term of offi ce and may by resolution appoint another person to hold offi ce until the expiration of the term of offi ce of the member so removed.(ii) If a member of the committee to whom a proposed resolution referred to in clause (i) relates makes representations in writing to the Secretary or President and requests that the representations be notifi ed to the members of the Association, the Secretary or President may send a copy of the representations to each member of the Association or if the representations are not so sent, the member is entitles to require that the representations be read out at the meeting at which the resolution is considered.

The rational for proposing the amendment is that, rare though they are, disputes and problems can arise on the committee where a committee member fails to discharge their duties in an acceptable fashion and/or is at odds with the rest of the committee. Under such circumstances a mechanism for dealing with this is needed. 3. Under article 17, Record Performances, it is proposed to reword the “register of record performances” to "The Records and Awards Offi cer shall keep an up to date list of current record performances made by members. The authenticity of any performance submitted as a record shall be determined by the Committee.

The rationale for the proposal was that there is some confusion as to the interpretation of the word “register”.

AARRIVING BY CAR and train, we gathered at "Brigadoon", as we dubbed it, on a beautiful Southern Highlands Saturday morning.

More than 15,000 others joined us for a day of porridge, haggis, bagpipes, massed bands and all things north of the border.

Our main focus, however were the Highland Games –shot putting, hay bale tossing, haggis throwing, and throwing events called weight for height and weight for distance.

There were, of course, the more traditional events of caber tossing and the lifting of the "Stones of Manhood" – five huge sandstone marbles ranging in weight from 110kg to 165kg. You needed to have haggis for brains to do this event!

Of the hundreds who attempted to qualify for the weight for distance and weight for height events, only 13 made the qualifying distance in the shot – six women and seven men.

The half-Scottish Lynette McSmith was our only female qualifier, in addition to Andrew McAtkinson-Howatt, Lajos McJoni (from the Clan McJoni and representing Budapest) and "Wee Jock McPlop" himself – Keith McJames.

Also in the team was Bob McBanens from across the border in the ACT.

Cheering us on were a team of supporters: our tartan-headed President, Mark McJohnston, Robert McHanbury-Brown and their partners, Sandii and Janet.

The standout performance must go to Lynette. She won her shot qualifier and the haggis throw and set or equalled games records in the weight for height and weight for distance events.

Incidentally, the women's weight is 18kg! For this, she picked up four gold medals and the Open Female Grand Champion Shield.

Mark McJohnston won the Hay Bale toss under protest and Andrew McAtkinson-Howatt won the haggis toss.

Not a bad effort for a weekend out, so make sure sure you put the event in your diaries for 2009. TW
