What makes an international conference and trade show such as theWorld of Asphalt Show & Conference exciting is the opportunity to seethe newest technology the industry has to offer. Innovations in millingand paving machines; technology and software systems that enhanceequipment performance; and professional services that help asphalt andaggregate industry contractors make more money are all displayed. The asphalt market is truly dynamic. Each year it is amazing to see

new products and refinements/enhancements of existing products. Thelarge equipment manufacturers are always vying to offer machines thatare easier to operate, more productive, and more efficient while beinggentler to the environment. When visiting the equipment manufacturers this year at World of

Asphalt, look for these innovations and trends:

Innovative DesignsLook for gravity-fed pavers. These must be paired

with material transfer vehicles to ensure asteady flow of HMA to help reduce phys-ical and thermal segregation in theasphalt mix. With the design, gravi-ty is what feeds the material direct-ly to the auger from the mass flowhopper, replacing the need for slatconveyors, hopper wings, pushrollers and tandem front buggiesused in conventional pavers. Gravity-fed pavers are said to be

more fuel efficient because lessengine power is required as comparedto a traditional paver conveyor system, which requires more moving parts. The sim-ple design of the gravity-fed paver also hasbeen shown to reduce maintenance costs andtechnician time.

Increased Operator ComfortLook for machines that feature greater operator comfort. It has long

been acknowledged that operator comfort can reap many dividends. Aless fatigued machine operator is more productive, less accident prone, and happier. Look for operator platforms that swing out to improve the

operator’s line of sight and that can pivot so the operator can positionthemselves to see not only down the side of the machine but also back.Look for machine controls and display screen to be intuitively arrangedand for them to move with the seat as it swings into better viewing van-tage. And look for the seat to be positioned up a little higher, giving theoperator the advantage of seeing more of their surroundings.Look for pavers with an air curtain feature. Operator comfort is

increased through an airflow system that creates a barrier near the backwall of the hopper. This air curtain feature pushes the asphalt fumes andheat up and away from the operator platform, ensuring a cooler and

more breathable space.

Easy Maintenance Some paving and milling machine

makers are designing their machineswith the repair and maintenance tech-nician in mind. Look for logically-placed access

doors on the sides and tops ofmachines. Look for engine hoods thatlift hydraulically and with a back upmanual-lift feature. Manufacturerswho are interested in making mainte-nance easier are providing an enginecompartment that is roomy enough tomake component access convenient.

The intent behind these refinements is to ensure quick and thoroughmaintenance and reduce having technicians take short cuts because it’stoo difficult to work on a machine.

Compact Machines for Smaller SpacesThe market for smaller asphalt pavers, generally under 21,000 lbs

(9,525.4 kg) has improved as the economy has improved. The key is versatility. A compact machine can be used in housing and

commercial projects requiring different paving widths for parking lots, bicycle paths and driveways. And they can be helpful in urban areas withgrowing downtown revitalization projects. A compact machine can pavea narrow alley and with screed extensions can easily turn a lot into pavedparking.Look for compact wide rubber-track asphalt pavers that are designed

to work in all types of sub-grades and paving applications. see WOA page 18

A new-design material transfer vehicle and anew 10-ft. (3 m) tracked paver — both fromVögele — were introduced at World of Asphalt2016. They are among eight products forasphalt paving — plus a Kleemann crusher —that were shown at Wirtgen America’s stand. The newly designed MT 3000-2i material

transfer vehicle from Vögele weighs 56,000 lb.(25,401 kg), with 18-ton (16 t) storage capaci-ty, heavy enough to get the job done, butportable enough to haul anywhere. Its low pro-file gives it a low center of gravity, and innova-tions give it an edge in performance and pro-ductivity that the conventional products don’thave, according to the manufacturer. The MT 3000-2i can move 1,300 tons

(1,179 t) per hour, and active remixing isachieved by two 16-in. (40.6 cm) diameter con-ical augers in the receiving hopper. Both pri-mary and secondary conveyor belts are 43 in.(109 cm) wide, and are heated to keep materialfrom sticking, and eliminate “warm up” loads. The secondary conveyor can swing 55 deg toleft or right. Heated scrapers also keep the beltsconstantly clean with a minimum of fuss. The Super 2000-3i 10-ft. tracked Super

2000-3i replaces the Vision 5200-2i, and is thefirst of a line that will supplant the acclaimedVision series. The Super 2000-3i features abasic width of 10 ft. and a maximum pavingwidth of 28 ft. (8.5 m). It has a top placementrate of 1,540 tph (1,397 t).Due to its compact dimensions, maneuver-

ability, variable paving width and high per-formance, the Super 700-3i is an ideal paver forsurfacing small paths, roadways and openareas. Successor to the popular Super 700-2,the small Super 700-3i is a practical machinefor both commercial and municipal contrac-tors.One of Wirtgen’s most powerful cold mills,

the Wirtgen W 220 is supplied with a 7-ft. 2-in.(2 m) drum. The W 220 provides the millingwidth and depth of the heavier W 250i —Wirtgen’s biggest and most powerful mill —but with a lower weight that enables it to moreeasily meet legal weight load limits. The Wirtgen W 120 CFi medium-size cold

mill is part of the new series of intermediate-sized cold mills — the W 100 CFi, W 120 CFiand W 130 CFi — based on a common plat-form and introduced in 2015. The W 120 CFiis a compact front-loader in the 1 m class, with

a milling width of 48 in. (1.2 m).The new W 60 Ri small milling machine

represents Wirtgen small mill capabilities. TheW 60 Ri is a small milling machine with amilling width of 23.6 in. (50 cm) and a maxi-mum milling depth of 8 in. (20 cm). With its141 hp Tier IV-interim engine, it weighs 16,534lb. (7,500 kg).The 13.2-ton (12 t) HD+ 120i VV HF tan-

dem roller from Hamm provides high frequen-cy vibration in both drums, ranging from 45 to67 Hz. The 11.5-ton HD+ 110i VO tandem roller

from Hamm combines Hamm Oscillationcompaction in one drum, and conventionalvibration in the other. Hamm’s oscillation tech-nology lowers vibration stress on the environ-ment while reaching an optimum of com-paction quality, according to the manufacturer.

The Mobirex MR 110 ZSi EVO 2 and thelarger MR 130 Zi EVO 2 impact offer the high-est technologies in aggregate production andconstruction materials recycling, and are TierIV final emissions-compliant. They’re espe-cially well-suited for processing of RAP andrecycled concrete aggregate (RCA).EVO 2 represents the continuing evolution

of the successful EVO Contractor Line, withadditional benefits in terms of economy andoperational safety. The MR 110 ZSi EVO 2 hasa crusher inlet opening of 43.3 in. (110 cm),which provides feed capacities of up to 350 tph(317.5 t).For more information, call 615/501-0600 or

Volvo Construction Equipment will soon introduce the VolvoIntelligent Compaction (IC) for select Volvo asphalt compactors avail-able in two packages — Volvo IC and Volvo IC with density direct. Inaddition to offering the pass mapping, temperature mapping and datastorage features of the Volvo IC system, Volvo IC with density directincludes real-time density mapping technology.“Density mapping has been described as the ‘holy grail’ of intelligent

compaction. The first to come up with the technology will be the one toradically advance the paving industry, it was said, and that’s exactly whatVolvo has done,” said Fares Beainy, research engineer at VolvoConstruction Equipment. “For years, contractors have relied on IC sys-tems with stiffness calculations instead of density, which is not the truemetric by which contractors are evaluated and paid. With density direct, operators have real-time access to the metric that ultimately determinesthe success of their work, density.”

Set the Density and Get to WorkWithin the density direct system is a calibration screen, where the user

sets the target density for the project. Once fully calibrated with data spe-cific to the application, the Volvo intelligent compaction with densitydirect system produces a density calculation that is accurate to within 1.5percent of core sampling, providing a real-time reading of density valuesover 100 percent of the mat. With this real-time data, the operator is given the chance to make any

necessary adjustments while asphalt is being paved. This not onlyreduces the occurrence of inadequate densities that drive up project costs,

but reduces time spent taking core samples, improves quality and leadsto much greater uniformity than nuclear gauge testing. Calibrations alsoare “saved” by the machine, so operators can assign calibrations to cer-tain elements of a job, and quickly switch back and forth between cali-brations to meet the demands of specific job elements.

Operator-Friendly InterfaceThe user interface of Volvo IC with density direct depicts a density

map, showing each square foot of rolled asphalt in a color representingdensity, and also provides a real-time numerical density reading dis-played in the corner of the screen. Both Volvo IC and Volvo IC with den-sity direct offer real-time temperature and pass mapping data. Using the8 by10 in. color monitor of the Volvo IC system, the pass mapping func-tion captures each compactor pass and drum overlap with an individualcolor, so that the operator can easily see gaps and work to maintain uni-form coverage. Temperature mapping provides the operator with a tem-perature “map” that shows the path of the compactor overlaid with thelast recorded surface temperature.

Data Storage and GPSData gathered from pass mapping, temperature mapping and density

mapping is stored on the IC system’s internal 14 GB hard drive, whichprovides enough space for approximately seven months of data logging.Data can be backed up to USB drives in VEDA format — the Freewaresystem promoted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) forIC systems. With optional Differential GPS, the data gathered fromVolvo IC is linked to location information accurate to within 0.5 in. BothVolvo IC packages meet state DOT and FHWA requirements for intelli-gent compaction specifications.

Independently Tested and ProvenDensity direct was developed and tested as part of the FHWA

Highways for LIFE Technology Partnerships Program. The technologywas used on various full-depth and overlay asphalt pavement projectsand later evaluated by independent users at sites throughout the country. The results were overseen by University of Oklahoma researchers andshowed that density direct calculations were proven to be within 1.5 per-cent of core samples every time at 180 test locations.

Availability in Q4 2015Volvo IC and Volvo IC with density direct will be available in Q4

2015 on new Volvo asphalt compactors, initially including VolvoDD110B, DD120B and DD140B models sold in North America.Aftermarket availability for Volvo asphalt compactors will follow in thefuture, exclusively through Volvo Construction Equipment dealers. For more information, call 717/532-9181 or visit www.volvo.com.(This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s

IsuzuCommercial Truck ofAmerica Inc. announced that it shat-tered two long-standing sales records in 2015— for the highest parts sales and for sales ofIsuzu commercial trucks.

Isuzu dealers retailed 20,725 Isuzu trucks tocustomers in 2015 — a record for Isuzu trucksin the United States. This record included awhopping 10.5 percent gain in Isuzu N-Seriessales versus 2014.

This outpaced Isuzu’s competitive set inClass 3 through 5 commercial vehicles.Calendar-year registrations of Class 3 through5 vehicles through October 2015, the latestmonth for which figures are available, were uponly 5 percent, less than half the N-Series pace.

Meanwhile, Isuzu sold 5.5 percent moreparts in the United States than it did in 2014,representing the most parts ever sold.

“After celebrating the 30th anniversary ofIsuzu trucks here in 2014, what better way tostart our fourth decade in the United Statesmarket than with record-breaking sales?”asked Shaun C. Skinner, executive vice presi-dent and general manager of IsuzuCommercial Truck of America.

“Thanks to the strength of our product, theloyalty of our customers and the dedication ofour dealers, we expect to be setting morerecords for many years to come,” Skinner said.

At the show this year, Roadtec will be highlighting the “StealthPaver,” the SP-100, paired with a Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehi-cle. The gravity fed machine eliminates the conveyors used in conven-tional pavers. This reduces operating costs for fuel consumption andmaintenance, and prevents down time. Best of all, contractors regularlysee a significant improvement on IRI smoothness ratings when using theSP-100, according to Roadtec. Also on display in the Roadtec show space will be the all-new 8 ft.

(2.4 m) track paver, the RP-175E. The RP-175’s full counter-rotate abil-ity and track flotation allow the paver to maneuver and operate in tightareas without sacrificing tractive effort or pushing power. In moving toTier IVF engine and emissions standards, the engineers took the chanceto make some major improvements across the whole platform. Upgradesinclude increased visibility for the operator and better fume extractionwhile maintaining Roadtec’s quality. Building all of its machines fromplate steel to final paint in the same facility allows Roadtec the ability touse a material ideal for final design, not making tradeoffs for manufac-turing ease, the manufacturer said.On the other side of the display will be the RX-600e cold planer,

which offers a combination of power, balance and efficiency.

In addition to optimum weight balance and high productivity, the RX-600e is available in three-track and four-track versions. The RX-600eoffers cut depths of up to 13 in. (33 cm) and 86 in. (218 cm) wide, depending on the cutter drum. Roadtec now includes a dust extractionsystem standard on all mills, to keep the job site cleaner and safer.Roadtec can supply specialty drums for many applications, including

profiling. Roadtec drums can now be configured with the all new QX1quick change cutter tooling system. This system increases the life of thecutter tooling while reducing time and effort to perform routine mainte-nance.The Rp-175e paver and RX-600e mill can both also get Roadtec’s

Guardian Remote Telematics system. With Guardian, the machine’selectrical system, hydraulic system, engine, pressure transducers,grade/slope control, and fuel consumption can be closely monitored inreal-time via cellular signal. The Guardian system allows owners andservice technicians to closely monitor the machine’s activity and easilytroubleshoot the machine’s various systems. The Guardian system willautomatically email all fault codes and maintenance reminders.

Rubble Master is dedicated to professionalism and customer satisfac-tion. It convinces its customers not only due to the machines’ ability ofcrushing asphalt, but the machines also can be used for crushing concreteand round basalt. Being a reliable business partner, living an open com-munication and a high customer focus also are essential parts of the com-pany culture. This is what Tom and Amanda Bright, owners of PortlandRoad and Driveway, a company situated in Oregon, experienced whenthey got to know Rubble Master at a tradeshow and started their businessrelationship.

RM looked into the specific requirements of Portland Road andDriveway and offered them a customized solution. A few days after Tomsaw a RM crusher in action for the first time and experienced the com-pany’s welcoming culture, Tom was the proud new owner of a RM100GO!.

Rubble Master did not leave them on their own afterwards. Once theequipment arrived in Portland, RM Service Manager Scott Price andSales Manager Franz Niedermeier taught the crews about the crusherand scalping plant. Their primary goal was to teach and then step aside.

This way the RM team quickly prepared the crews to be independentwhile making sure that they had their phone numbers if they needed any-thing.

The RM 100GO! meets the high safety requirements of the MSHA.At an unplanned inspection, it was stated that the machine was the firstone ever with no objections, pointing out the built-in safety features ofthe machines.

Municipalities across the country are being asked to do more withless. Shrinking budgets are nothing new for municipalities, forcing themto make hard choices when buying equipment. Of course they want tobuy the best but don’t always have room for it in the budget. We all knowthe best is often times not the cheapest and even though they are thecheapest they are rarely the best value. One piece of equipment in partic-ular is often times looked over in a municipal budget and that isthe asphalt hotbox reclaimer.

Asphalt hotboxes are a vital piece of equipment inany municipal’s road maintenance fleet because theyallow municipalities to buy what they need and usewhat they buy in regards to hotmix asphalt. Whenselecting a hotbox, the possibilities are limited butthe quality difference in those options arevery apparent. One thing to always consid-er is the steel construction of the hotbox.

Channel steel is always preferable asopposed to tubular steel construction. Tubularsteel construction promotes rust from theinside out compromising the structural integri-ty of the unit. Channel steel is more reliableand allows 100 percent weld coverage in keystructural areas resulting in channel steelframes lasting considerably longer than tubular steel frames, accordingto K-M International.

Another key factor is the location of the burner and other key compo-nents. The burner system is the most important part of a hotbox reclaimerand should be properly protected. Some manufacturers locate their burn-er and key components below the frame, resulting in road grime anddebris damaging the burner and its components. So when purchasing ahotbox reclaimer, ensure that the hotbox you are purchasing has its burn-er and components located above the frame in an enclosed cover. This

will save you thousands in maintenance costs in the long run. Do not justlook at the purchase costs, ask for a frequent change item list and youwill see the upfront savings are later recouped in spare parts.

If you have looked into an asphalt hotbox recently the option of oiljacketed vs air jacketed may have come up. An oil jacketed hotboxmeans that a layer of oil is placed in between the asphalt compartments

inner and outer wall. An air jacketed unit has no oil, it isinstead of an insulation material to retain heatthroughout the asphalt heating compartment.

Although oil jacketed units do work, the costsassociated with repairing an oil jacketed unit ifpunctured is substantial. If built properly an airjacketed system has the better heat transfer abil-ity as an oil jacketed unit to maintain a consis-tent heat throughout the asphalt compart-ment, according to K-M.

One major thing to remember when pur-chasing a hotbox is the unit’s capabilities. Ahotbox reclaimer is not an asphalt recycler.Meaning no hotbox on the market regardless ofthe BTU output, will recycle millings or otherjunk asphalt material. Don’t be led astray orconfused by some industry claims of recycling

in a hotbox, it cannot be done. A hotbox is used to maintain HMA at aworkable temperature, and reclaiming bulk stored virgin material.

When purchasing a hotbox make sure you do the proper research, because not all hotboxs are created equal. Ensure whatever hotbox youdecide to go with will stay on the road being used instead of in the shopbeing worked on. Always check the manufacturer’s warranty to ensurethat they will stand behind their product.

(This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’sWeb site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

The F1000T tracked paver meets Tier IVFinal standards and increases productivitythrough operator comfort and visibility. Thepaver eliminates segregation with Dynapac’sfeed control system and features 18-in. (45.7cm) wide, smooth or threaded, rubber trackbands that create the friction needed to pushfully loaded pavers up steep inclines.

Atlas Copco will be showcasing the produc-tion-ready F1000T paver at booth 2514 duringWorld of Asphalt in Baltimore, Md., March 17to 19. This is a major milestone for the F1000Tsince a prototype was displayed duringConExpo 2014.

The paver features two operating stations oneach side that are ergonomically designed toreduce operator fatigue. The stations swing outto provide maximum visibility to the front andrear, and controls have grouped switches forsimple operation and a display for vital paverparameters. The operating station overlooksone of the lowest decks in the industry — 5 1/4ft. (1.6 m) tall, which contributes to maximumvisibility.

The paver ensures continuous material flowusing Dynapac’s exclusive auger-conveyorfeed-control system. The system uses fourultrasonic sensors that measure paving materi-al and automatically adjust conveyors and out-board augers to optimize material flow. Thesystem eliminates segregation and delivers a

constant head of material and the smooth flowneeded to produce quality mats.

Mechanics can access all hydraulic systemand engine components easily by opening thepaver’s steel access doors that feature gassprings. The gas springs make it easy formechanics to open the service doors andsecurely holds the doors open during repairs. Inaddition, the engine compartment’s configura-tion allows mechanics to remove internal com-ponents independent of others. For example, amechanic can remove the diesel particulate fil-ter without taking out other components first.

The material flows through the Carlsonfront- or rear-mounted screed to construct flaw-

less mats. A tractor-mounted 34-kW generator

heats the screed’s full working width, which is

as wide as 26 ft. (7.9 m) with the Carlson EZ

R-1020 screed. The front extension screed is

ideal for paving parking lots, county roads and

city streets because contractors can change its

width quickly to suit to the project’s demands.

The robust rear extension screed extends to 26

ft. wide for use on large paving projects,

including highways, interstates and airports.

In terms of hopper capacity, the 14-ft. (4.3 m) wide hopper feeder thatcomes standard on the TS-522 is rated to 12-cu.-yds. (9.2 cu m). Thisextra space is built to accommodate a greater amount of material, enabling higher production rates.

The TS-522 also offers ample screening area, which further con-tributes to the machine’s high output ratings. With a 22 by 5 ft. (6.7 by1.5 m) top deck and a 20 by 5 ft. (6 by 1.5) bottom deck, the machinehas a total screening area of 210 sq. ft. (19.5 sq m). This two-deck designenables users to produce and sort up to three different size products. Forcustomers needing four finished products, IROCK offers the TS-522TD, a three-deck version of the screener. The decks can be interchangedso customers have more control over end-product size.

Hydraulically folding side conveyors feature high stockpiling heightsand capacity, providing the stacking heights necessary to match themachine’s high output rates. Able to stack up to 16 ft. 8 in. (5 m) on thesides and 16 ft. 2 in. (4.9 m) on the tail, these conveyors provide the con-venience of running the machine for longer before needing to repositionfinished material.

In addition to the 129-hp Caterpillar C4.4 engine, the TS-522 offersadditional heavy-duty add-ons specifically designed for high productionrates and extra durability. A vibrating livehead also is an option to accom-modate heavier, sticky materials. When running heavy, dirty materials

such as recycled concrete, the vibrating livehead can replace the standardgrid over the hopper to provide additional screening before the materialenters the hopper.

Several options also allow for easy maintenance and portability. While the TS-522 comes standard with an attached cord and remote forcontrolling and maneuvering the screener around a job site, a wirelessremote option also is available. Walkways alongside the screeners pro-vide full access to each side of the screenbox for ease of maintenance orscreen changeouts.

IROCK is not only known for its heavy-duty units and high-qualitycomponents, but also for exceptional customer service. The companyhas convenient 24-hour online parts look up and ordering, fast delivery, and live service support until 9 p.m. EST.

Also, look for machines withfull counter-rotate ability andtrack flotation, which will allowthem to maneuver and pave intight areas without sacrificingtractive effort or pushing power.

Smaller asphalt pavers areequipped with features associat-ed with many larger machinessuch as seats of the dual operatorstations that can move outbeyond the sides of the machine. This gives the operator an excel-lent view down the sides of themachine. Look for tracked com-pact pavers, which have a fully oscillating trackframe that provides a smooth ride and can laydown a smoother mat.

Cleaner Cold PlanersMilling machines have dirty, dusty jobs to

do. They are workhorses that manufacturersstrive to provide a combination of power, bal-ance and efficiency. Efforts are being made bymanufacturers to comply with the new indus-try guidelines to reduce worker exposure torespirable crystaline silica during asphalt pave-ment milling.

Look for new three-track and four-trackcold planers to feature dust extraction systemsbecoming standard on all mills, designed tokeep job sites cleaner and safer.

Look for milling machines to providegreater adaptability to jobsite tasks. Look forquick-change cutter tooling systems that aredesigned to increase the life of the cutter tool-

ing while reducing time and effort to performroutine maintenance. The ability to changedrums can provide contractors with optionsand access to specialty drums for many appli-cations, including profiling.

Remote CommunicationCapabilities

Advanced field-to-office communicationvia remote telematics systems are available.Look for capabilities to monitor a machine’selectrical system, hydraulic system, engine, pressure transducers, grade/slope control, andfuel consumption in real-time via a cellular sig-nal. These advanced systems can allow ownersand service technicians to closely monitor amachine’s activity and easily troubleshoot themachine’s various systems. And on top of it,the same system will automatically email allfault codes and maintenance reminders.

With remote telematics systems, cold plan-ers and asphalt pavers become intelligent

machines that can help manage productivity, reduce downtime, reduce rework, and helpincrease profits.

Resource and SourceContractors visiting World of Asphalt 2016
