DESCRIPTION
My Write-up for "World Occupational Therapy Day" CelebrationsTRANSCRIPT
27th October, 2015, Tuesday: World Occupational Therapy Day
Occupational Therapy is an allied healthcare profession, dealing with habilitation and rehabilitation of
clients, who are suffering from neuro-musculoskeletal, developmental, cardio-respiratory, mental and other
system’s disorders, diseases or illnesses. Occupational Therapy professionals work as team members along
with Physicians, Surgeons, Nurses, Orthotists, Prosthetists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Nutritionists and
Medical Social Workers, with a goal aiming at betterment of their clients and returning them back to their
original work and daily living.
Occupational Therapists define ‘occupation’ as all encompassing - activities of daily living (self-care, hygiene,
mobility and communication), work and productive activities (job) and play as well as leisure activities, those
that all humans remain occupied with, throughout their lives. Occupational Therapists use functional
approach towards rehabilitation, in getting their clients back to their original occupations of life.
Key messages that Occupational Therapists would want to convey to all fellow humans on “World
Occupational Therapy Day”, irrespective of their health conditions, are:
Prevention is better than cure. (Be well aware of healthy practices of life and Stay away from illnesses)
Stitch in time saves nine. (Take charge of your body well before it’s condition becomes worse & non
curable)
Stay well informed about your health condition and the latest treatment options available locally, based on
global principles of treatment. A well-informed client is an asset for the healthcare team. Client is the core of
the team, with the healthcare fraternities’ working hand-in-hand around him/her.
“Perfect” practice makes man perfect. Timely, accurate, optimal, to the best of the facilities available locally
and principle based therapy with sound, global, strategic aims, in an integrated, interdisciplinary approach,
works the best, for all ailments.
Occupational Therapy adds life to years and not years to life.
Occupational Therapists believe in getting their clients back to their work (Occupations of Life).
