Report on World Menopause Month submitted by Dr. Sunila Khandelwal, Secretary General

& IMS India representative to CAMS.

Year 2014 and specifically October 2014 – the World Menopause Month saw excited academic activity at

IMS India through IMS Chapters, IMS Committees & IMS Members. The Public Awareness module on

“Prevention of Diseases after Menopause” circulated by International Menopause Society & CME module

on “Post Menopausal Osteoporosis” and “CHD” as per Presidential agenda of Dr. Maninder Ahuja

were widely organized all over the country .

The Activity Reports, Photographs and the Press Coverage are reflective of the enthusiastic participation of

IMS members through out the country. The Poster on the theme was translated in Hindi by Dr. Sunila

including the patient information leaflet and other public awareness materials were printed and distributed,

to the IMS Members through the IMS Chapters for medical professionals and general public.

The Chapter Secretaries have applauded the efforts of International Menopause Society for providing

academic slide kit, conveying a uniform message and for supporting the public awareness material.

Exclusively during the World Menopause Month, across India – Press releases were issued TV Shows and

Radio Talks were given by the GCM. Various Urban and Rural health Camps were conducted. In addition to

CME’s, Public awareness Programmes, Quizes, an innovative health walk and Cultural programmes of

dance, exercise and music for Women were organised. They were extensively covered by the print and

electronic media. Truly this year the World Menopause Month celebrations were in the international

perspective.

A Kick Start of World Menopause Month celebrations done at West

Zonal IMS conference at Ahemdabad. During this mega IMS event

inaugural session the awareness raising poster (translated) on

International Theme- “Prevention of

Diseases after menopause”, along

with leaflets were formally released.

The Campaign started in 40

chapters of Indian Menopause

Society with free distribution of

education material, screening

camps and public awareness programs across the country with

International perspective. CMEs conducted for multi specialty

medical fraternity using the slide kit & menopause practitioners tool kit. Press releases to media helped a lot

in spreading the awareness to mass at large.

The Jaipur Chapter conducted a CME on

Osteoporosis12th October at Jaipur. The CME

was attended by multi specialty doctors.

To generate interest in menopause health care

the IMS initiative - IMS quiz on "HRT- shifting

pendulum" was held, attempted by an

unprecedented 35 young gynecologists /

postgraduate s. The AV quiz had even the

senior gynecologists in the audience racing

their memories for the answers.

CAMS Secretary General Dr Sunila Khandelwal

delivered a keynote address on world

menopause theme. In the main scientific

session presentations made by Dr Maninder Ahuja, Dr Rakesh Bhargava, Dr Seema Sharma, Dr Seema

Mehta. The sessions were

chaired by Dr Sunila

Khandelwal, Dr Ranu Patni and

Dr Anju Soni.

The scientific session was

followed by inauguration of

the Club 35 plus by Dr

Maninder Ahuja. The World Menopause Month posters & leaflets were

unfurled & distributed to members for wider use. Dr Maninder Ahuja spoke

about the concept of Club 35 plus.

The revised edition of booklet on “Stay Healthy

After 40!” was released, distribution of

education material, Film Show and Exhibition.

Counselling, Consultation was based on health

questionnaire, after risk score assessment for

individualised treatment. Options given for

Complimentary alternate therapies by experts

(Yoga / homeopathy / physiotherapy / Dietary

advices). Free gynae consultation by Dr. Jaya Choudhary, Yoga advices by Dr. Pushplata Garg,

Homeopathy consultation by Dr. Suman, distribute free education material, Free Screening Tests (BMD &

BMI, Hb, Blood Sugar), film show and exhibition along with dietary advices. Approximately 100 females were

benefited by the camp. This was an yearly tribute for Dr. Durgawati Khuteta – Founder Member of Jaipur

Chapter and Mother of Dr. Sunila.

DD News telecasted educative message for public, mature women in

particular on International theme – “Prevention on Diseases after

menopause” Dr. Sunila Khandelwal was interviewed by media for

conveying the tips on the subject to mass population with International

perspective.

State news paper “Rajasthan Patrika” a major effective tool of media,

published an article on International Menopause Day. Symptomatology of

menopause, prevention of diseases at midlife and improving quality of life

by incorporating the main tips, were highlighted in the article. State

DD Rajasthan interview was telecasted on the importance of the

day and campaign theme for public awareness.

On World Osteoporosis day (Oct.20) Dr. Sunila Khandelwal had live

medi-talks on Jaipur Doordarshan in the program of “Swasth Desh”

and conveyed the message of “Stay Healthy After 40” by Preventing

diseases (osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity & cancer) after

Menopause. The global initiatives and work done by Indian

Menopause Society were highlighted.

18th & 19TH October 2014 – WORLD MENOPAUSE DAY IMS Kolkata organized 3 consecutive programs on 18th

& 19th October to celebrate World Menopause Day.

PROGRAM I -Public Awareness Program plus Health Check up Camp, Venue & Time- Rabindra Okakura

Bhawan, Salt Lake, Kolkata

This program was again divided in 3 phases-

1. Health Check up camp - 10am- 12 noon

Estimation of Hb, Sugar, BMD, BMI & TSH was done free of cost for 85 women of 40 plus age group. The

results are all kept in record in order to make future database if any.

2. "Meet The Experts" - 12 noon - 1 pm

An interactive session between the ladies & a panel of doctors including Dr H.P. Pattanaik, Prof .Biman K.

Chakraborty, Dr. K.D. Bakshi, Dr. shaktirupa Chakraborty and eminent physician Prof Sukumar Mukherjee

3. Activities by Ladies- 1- 2 pm

25 ladies including few doctors were asked to pick a piece of folded paper each with few dialogues from

scripts of Tagore' drama written on it. They were then asked to act that part of drama on stage in 2 minutes.

Eminent elocutionist Ratna Mitra and film Director Mahua Bhattacharya volunteered to be the judges. The

first 3 winners were awarded trophy & prizes and all participants were given a small memento with IMS Logo

embossed.

18th October 2014 - CME on CHD was organized by Kolkata Chapter as the second Program no World

Menopause Day at Rabindra Okakura Bhawan at 3- 6pm on 18.10.2014. The topics & Speakers were as

follows -

19th October 2014 – CME IMS Kolkata organized a CME on 19 .10.2014 from 11am- 3pm as the program no. 3

of World Menopause Month.

19th October 2014 – Inauguration of the Chapter and CME on Osteoporosis

President IMS, India, 2014 -15 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are happy to inform you that patna chapter of Indian menopause society was inaugurated on

Wednesday,19 October 2014(world Menopause Day) by Dr. Maninder Ahuja, the president of Indian

menopause society.

The inauguration was followed by a C.M.E conducted by Dr. Shanti roy and Dr. Manju Gita Mishra. The

panelists were Dr. Kusum Gopal Kapoor, Dr. Pragya Mishra Choudhary, Dr. John Mukhopadhyay

(Orthopedic Surgeon) and Dr. Kumar Anuj (Endocrinologist).

Two hundred attended the meeting. The Patna chapter IMS held a meeting at Magadh Mahila collage on

20 October 2014 with the assistance of Dr. Amulaya Kumar Singh (orthopedic surgeon & member of IMS).

The purpose was to make students aware of problems. Dr. Anupuma, an Oncologist was present. 250

students & teachers of the collage attended the meeting.

Bhagalpur Obstetric AND Genic Society

Bhagalpur OBGYN Society celebrated World Menopause Day with lot of vigour and enthusiasm. Women

from different walks of life participated in this, which included NGOs like SEWA (Self Employed Women

Association), Lions, Rotary, Jagriti & Shefaali clubs of Bhagalpur, teachers from different schools & colleges

and the housewives of Bhagalpur.

An awareness walk was organized in the morning in which hundreds of women holding placards walked

through the main streets of Bhagalpur from government hospital to IMA building. This was followed by a tree

plantation in the IMA building premises. In the evening, BMD test was done for all the females, followed by

28th October 2014- World Menopause Day - BMD Camp

Guwahati Chapter of IMS. On 28th of October, we organized BMD estimation camp at Marwari Maternity

Hospital. Total Number of Patient participated in the camp was 102 out of which 52 were normal, 44 were

diagnosed osteopenic and 4 were Osteoporotic. The patient were in the age group of 30yrs to 65 years of

age from perimenopause to menopausal group. 1 was in the extreme of age (85yrs).

IMS Varanasi Chapter organized the IMS East Zone Conference on 18th and 19th October 2014. We had

started Celebrating World Menopause Day early morning on 18th October 2014 By Walk and Public

awareness about Health and Menopause with our IMS Members and Friends .It was highly appreciated and

well supported by media on local TV Channels and Newspaper.

On 18th Oct. Evening we started with session of short communication followed by session of Orations .

18TH October 2014 – Public Awareness Programme

Public awareness program on Menopause was organized on 18 October 2014 in association with Rotary

club of Pune Katraj. The venue was Rajiv Gandhi E learning centre auditorium. Dr Parag Biniwale, Chapter

Secretary welcomed audience on behalf of IMS Pune chapter and gave an overview of activities of IMS.

Dr Vaishali Biniwale moderated a panel comprising of Dr Shubhada Jathar (Gynaecologist), Dr Dhanashri

Bhide (Dermatologist), Dr N P Rao (Physician), Dr Arvind Panchnadikar (Psychiatrist), Dr Hrishikesh Saraf

(Orthopaedic surgeon), Mrs. Vaidehi Oak (dietician). Questions were invited from floor & the discussion went

on for nearly 2 hours. 150 women & men attended the program. The participants were felicitated by Rotary

club of Pune Katraj.

15th October 2014 – PG Quiz on HRT -Shifting Pendulum

PG quiz was arranged by IMS Pune chapter conducted a quiz on HRT: shifting pendulum on 15 October

2014 at Jehangir Hospital. 25 PG students from various medical colleges participated. Dr Vipin kumar from

AFMC was the winner & will represent Pune chapter in Annual IMS quiz. Dr Jyothi Unni, Dr Parag Biniwale, Lt.

Col. Uttara Iyer Kohli were the judges.

10TH October 2014 – Dr Shubhada Jathar, Jt. Secretary of Pune Chapter talked to a group of 40 women

from Research Institute of Health Science and Management on 10 October 2014. She delivered a talk on

menopause concerns & management which was followed by interactive session.

4th October 2014 – Dr Parag Biniwale Chapter secretary addressed 300 women in a Conference of breast

cancer survivors on 4 October 2014. He discussed various gynaecological problems at menopause. This was

followed by question answer session.

18th October 2014 – Club35+ Cultural Programme

IMS Gurgaon chapter along with Gurgaon OBGYN Society celebrated WORLD MENOPAUSE DAY on 18th

October '14, in a very colorful way. We had a family get together of our members wherein we also invited

five families of our club 35 members. They were asked to speak on how much they have benefited from

attending club 35 meets. It was very encouraging to note that they are so enthusiastic about attending and

getting more members to join the club. This was followed by games of tambola and then a dandiya night

where all the ladies danced and enjoyed to the beat of dandiya music. There gifts for the best dressed

male and female and also the best dancing couple. About 45 couples with children joined and enjoyed

the program.

200 women underwent BMD. Between the age of 35–70 years. The analysis and details are as follows : -

· 70% women were Osteopenia Tscore ≤ -2.5

· 20% of the Osteoporosis Tscore -1 to -2.4

· 10% of the Normal Tscore ≥-1

They were advised medical therapy, Lifestyle management, Nutrition & Repeat BMD after 6 months to 1

year. The event was sponsored by Sun Inca.

21st October 2014 – World Menopause Day – Rural Camp

In continuation of our World Menopause Day 2014 programmes, the IMA Lucknow branch and the

Lucknow chapter of IMS conducted a free camp for the perimenopausal women, on 21st October,2014 at

the IMA Bhavan,Lucknow, which was well attended. Thereafter, Dr. Rukhsana Khan, president, Lucknow

branch, IMA, addressed the women. The highlight of the programme was the presence of Dr. Saroj

Srivastava ,who was kind enough to grace the occasion. She along with Dr. Indu Tandon, ex. Prof. Obs &

Gyn., KGMU, Dr. Uma Singh, Prof. Obs & Gyn., KGMU, and Dr. Naini Tandon, answered the questions put

forward by the audience and also educated them about the lifestyle modifications required after

18th October 2014 – World Menopause Day – Press Conference

The Lucknow branch of the IMA , represented by president Dr. Rukhsana Khan, and the Lucknow chapter of

the IMS, represented by the chapter secretary, Dr. Naini Tandon, jointly held a press conference on the

occasion of the World Menopause Day on 18th October,2014 at the Lucknow press club building,

Hazratgang. About 15 reporters from different daily newspapers attended. We spoke at length about the

perimenopausal changes and problems and about the lifestyle changes required for preventing diseases

and maintaining health after menopause. There was an extensive press coverage the next day.

The Lucknow chapter of IMS organized a BMD camp in Bakshi Ka Talab, a village near Lucknow on

8th October,2014.We had published it well in advance and so 82 peri and postmenopausal women

attended the camp. We filled the forms provided by Jagsonpal and performed the BMD test in all the

women attending the camp. Meyer organics were kind enough to provide the portable BMD machine.

More than 90% of the women were osteoporotic. We counseled each and every women separately about

the importance of calcium and vit D supplementation, about exercise and a calcium rich diet, sun

exposure and lifestyle modifications .We also advised them to guide their daughters and daughter in laws to

take care of their bones. Appropriate medicines were also prescribed. In all it was a very fruitful experience.

10th October 2014 – CME on Prevention of Diseases in Menopause & Osteoporosis arranged meeting with

general practitioners BAMS Doctors given lecture on prevention of diseases after menopause and

Osteoporosis in detail on10-10-14at hotel Down Town Meeting was sponsored by Gracia Pharma

company. It was well attended nearly 60 Doctors attended.

A CME on Osteoporosis – “IMS Ostiflav : “Stand Tall” Support Your Bones, They Support You” was organized

by IMS Mumbai Chapter in collaboration with Zydus Nutriva on 11th October 2014 at Rapicon Hall, Dr. BAM

Hospital, Nirmal Park, Byculla, Mumbai. Chapter Secretary, Dr. Nayna Dastur welcomed all the guest &

faculty. CME was inaugurated by Dr. Nayna Dastur and Dr. Sompal (Chief Medical Director Central

Railway). It was attended by 70 doctors & many of them were from different specialties (Orthopedic

Surgeon, Gynaecologist, Physician, Psychiatrist, Radiologist, Dentist, General Surgeon, Pediatrician and

Dermatologist)

Conveners were Dr. Beena Kumari, Dr. Sarita Bhalerao, & Dr. Bhavini Shah Balakrishnan. Dr. Sompal,

Dr. Suvarna Khadilkar, Dr. Nita Dalal and Dr. George chaired the sessions. Lunch was served before the

programme but everyone was wide awake & actively participated in academic activities.

blessed with Dr. Rama Vaidya’s presence.

Panel discussion on Preventing Diseases after Menopause: Let Us Work Together for Health of Midlife

Women was moderated by : Dr. Suvarna khadilkar & Dr. Beena Kumara Expert Panelists gave valuable

inputs and enlightened the audience panelists were leading consultants from different specialty, included

Dr. Anil kumar[Cardiologist], Dr. Satish khadilkar [Neurologist], Dr Hemant Bhandari [Orthopedician], Dr Usha

Saraiya,[Gynecologist] Dr Rajesh Kumar, [Dermatologist]Dr Milan balkrishnan[ Psychiatrist]

As an awareness campaign of WHO theme 2014 of prevention of vector born diseases, mosquito repellents

were distributed to all . High Tea was served before the program. Our Educational partners were Torrent-

Sensa Pharmaceuticals.

This was followed by MOGS outreach program on Menopause:

Dr Champa Nariyani Head of the department of Obgyn , Bombay hospital addressed the audience.

and Dr Sachin Ajmera discussed review on Newer regimes for HRT: Dr Aditi Dani spoke on Infertility in the

Perimenopause, and Challenges of Perimenopausal Obstetric s were covered very well by Dr. Parikshit

Tank. The session was chaired by Dr.Kunjal Bhatija, Dr.Varsha Pai Dhungat & Nayana Dastur.

There was a panel Discussion: Perimenopausal Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Case Based Discussion Which

was moderated by Dr. Suvarna Khadilkar and Dr. Nagendra Sardeshpande. All the Panelists made the

discussion very lively.

29 Oct, 2014 – CME on CHD in Menopause

IMS , Shimla Chapter organized a Continuing Medical Education Programme( CME ) on Coronary Heart

Disease in Menopause in association with Eris Montana on 29th October,2014 at Hotel Oberoi Clark’s,Shimla.

Dr. Alok Sharma was the organizing Chairperson and Dr.Yogita Dogra was the organizing Secretary for the

CME. The programme initiated with lighting of the traditional lamp by the eminent guests along with

saraswati vandana. Dr. Santosh Minhas, Prof and HOD Kamla Nehru Hospital, Indira Gandhi Medical

College welcomed the audience. The scientific session was chaired by Dr. Pushplata Sood, Dr. Santosh

Minhas and Dr. Anupa Sood . Dr. Nalneesh Sharma, gynecologist discussed risk assessment of CHD and

metabolic syndrome. Dr. Balbir Verma ,Associate Professor, Deptt of Medicine at IGMC highlighted

prevention and management of CHD. Dr.Rajeev Sood,Associate Prof at Kamla Nehru Hospital, abreast the

audience with the role of HRT in CHD risk patients. Dr. K.B. Gupta, leading private practitioner talked on

scare of WHI and shifting pendulum of HRT. The sessions served an academic feast for the post graduate

students.

Large number of Medical Fraternity (50 delegates) including Orthopedicians, Radiologists attended &

graced the CME. The State Medical Council granted two credit hours to the CME. The Certificate of

participation was given to each delegate. Press was also invited. The speakers and the organizing

committee of CME were felicitated. Dr. Alok Sharma, Chapter Secretary proposed the vote of thanks and

encouraged the audience to work for betterment of women in menopause age group. The CME

concluded with National Anthem followed by dinner.

Dr. Alok Sharma and Dr Geetika Gupta Syal, Presented talks on Menopause and Osteoporosis and its

management for the teachers of Auckland House School, Shimla. This was to celebrate World Menopause

day in Shimla. One of the activities under Public awareness committee, Indian Menopause Society, Shimla

30th October 2014 – CME on Osteoporosis

On the occasion of World Menopause Month 2014, IMS Hyderabad Chapter in association with Zydus

Nutriva organised the IMS-Ostiflav Osteoporosis CME on “Stand Tall-Support Your Bones They Support You”

on 30th October, 2014 at Hotel The Plaza. It was attended by more than 40 Gyneaclogists.

The programme was was inaugurated by all the faculty after a welcome by Dr Lakshmi Rathna and pryer

by Dr. G. Vijayalakshmi.

The session was Chaired by senior stalwarts of IMS Hyderabad Dr. Hemalatha Rangachary & Dr D.

Pushpalatha. In the absence of Dr Savitha, Dr Meeta was requeted to give the talk on Defination &

Epidemiology of Osteoporosis".

18th October 2014 – CME & Public Forum on Prevention of Diseases in Menopause

On the occasion of World Menopause Day a CME on “Prevention of Diseases in Menopause” was

organized on 18th October, 2014, Saturday at GMH, Sultan Bazaar.

The programme initiated with a Welcome and brief introduction of the World Menopause Day Theme -

Prevention of Diseases at Menopause by Dr. Lakshmi R. Markani, Chapter Secretary Hyderabad Chapter,

Dr. G. Vijaylakshmi, Member IMS gave a melodious Prayer. The Programme was inaugurated by the invited

Dr. Vandana Bansal chapter Secretary welcomed the audience & introduced the topic of CHD in

menopausal women & how important is women health. “EPIDEMIOLOGY of CHD” was introduced by Dr.

Anjula Sahai , Dr. Vipul Rai Cardiologist Apollo, New Delhi, gave a lecture on “PREVENTION AND

MANAGEMENT OF CHD” , Dr Sushil Tripathi Cardiologist gave a brief on “RISK ASSESSMENT OF CHD &

METABOLIC SYNDROME” Dr. Abhilasha Chaturvedi highlighted on “ROLE OF HRT IN CHD RISK PATIENTS” The

Awareness of how HRT scares us was discussed by Dr Vandana Solanki. It was a quite interactive program,

Dr. A.K. Bansal , Dr. Sangeeta Khare , Dr. Rajendra DayalDr. Madhurima Shrivastav , & Dr. Sharad Verma

Chaired the session. It was followed by Q & A Session,

IMS Allahabad Chapter organized a CME on October 12, 2014 at Hotel Grand Continental, Allahabad. The

program was quite enriching and lucrative to create the awareness amongst the masses. This CME was

12th October 2014 – Quiz on HRT SHIFTING Pendulum & CME

The Jaipur chapter conducted a CME on 12th October at Hotel Ramada. We were honored to have the

President of IMS, Dr Maninder Ahuja for the event. The CME was attended by 61 doctors.

At the start, we had the IMS quiz on " HRT- shifting pendulum" which was attempted by an unprecedented

35 young gynecologists / postgraduates. There was an initial screening written round followed by an AV

round for the final four. The AV quiz had even the senior gynecologists in the audience racing their

memories for the answers. Dr Sunila Khandelwal then delivered a keynote address on world menopause

theme. This was then followed by the main scientific session. There were presentations by Dr Maninder

Ahuja, Dr Rakesh Bhargava, Dr Seema Sharma, Dr Seema Mehta, The sessions were chaired by Dr Sunila

Khandelwal, Dr Ranu Patni and Dr Anju Soni.

The scientific session was followed by inauguration of the Club 35 plus by Dr Maninder Ahuja. The wmm

poster was also unfurled . Dr Maninder Ahuja spoke about the concept of Club 35 plus. The CME pictures

10th October ,2014 – CME AND Camp on Cervical Cancer Screening

The Indian menopause society with the Indian society of colposcopy and cervical pathology conducted a

CME on recent trends in cervical cancer screening on 10th October. The topics discussed were

1. Screening methods past, present and future by Dr. Maninder ahuja

2. Should I screen all my patients? Dr. Sarita Shamsunder

3. HPV test and all you wanted to know by Dr. Manu Noatay.

18 October 2014 – World Menopause Day – Public awareness Camp

18TH Oct. was celebrated as world menopause day at Udaipur IMS chapter. A two days awareness camp

was organized by Udaipur Chapter of IMS in collaboration with Sanjivani Foundation (a registered

charitable trust).

During this camp free BMD, BMI and haemoglobin check up was done at Sanjivani Hospital Udaipur.

1st day almost 42 people were benefitted and 2nd day about 72. Along with free tests an awareness talk was

organized for 35 plus women by Dr.Kaushal Chundawat thereby making them aware of peri and post

The IMS - West Zone Conference was held at Hotel Silver cloud at Ahmedabad on 4th & 5th of October

2014.It was first big event in “World Menopause Month ” in 2014.Theme was “ Menopause :Transition and

Beyond ”Delegates from all over Gujarat attended the conference in large nos.

The faculties were from all over Gujarat, Udaipur, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Chandigarh.

The non Gynaec Faculties included Cardiologist, Onco-gynaec and Cosmetic surgeon

The sessions were from 9.30 am till 5.00 pm continuously in hall

The deliberations were in form of scientific talks, Panel discussions, Debates, Keynote address, and all

The entertainment evening was well attended and it was music, fun and dance all the way
