TRANSCRIPT
Running an in-class competition for World Maths Day is a great way to get the whole school involved in fun maths themed activities.
Using Mathletics alongside other maths-themed activities can help you get everyone excited for the global celebration that is World Maths Day!
WELCOME!
Getting Started World Maths Day 2019 will take place on 14th of March. The more students and teachers you can get involved the better – so make sure you organise your timetable around when you can access ICT facilities. If you have a lot of computers, laptops and tablets then you may be able to use the same timetable for the whole school but if you only have enough for one class then you will need to operate a rotation system for the parts of the day that involve Mathletics.
At any time on Thursday 14th March, this means you’ll be holding your World Maths Day celebration on the same day as thousands of other schools around the world. Schools will be sharing their celebrations on Twitter with the hashtag #WMD2019 so get online and see how schools across the globe are celebrating maths together! And why not join in and Tweet a picture of your own World Maths Day celebrations?
Don’t worry if you can’t join in on the 14th, simply run your competition on a different day and Tweet your pictures.
When to run the event
RUNNING A WORLD MATHS DAY CELEBRATION CLASS COMPETITIONTo run a celebration competition you will need access to Mathletics. If you don’t already have a Mathletics subscription, hopefully you ticked the box when downloading this pack, if not head over to uk.mathletics.com/freetrial to get free access for the whole month of March.
The competitions will be run in the Live Mathletics area of Mathletics (new to Live Mathletics? Learn more here). Each student plays every other student in their class on Live Mathletics with the winner being the student with the most victories.
Simply get your students logged on to Mathletics, navigate to Live Mathletics and then use the challenge a classmate feature to get each student to challenge every other student. You can get them to then record their head-to-head results on the league table in this lesson pack.
If you have a large class you may need to split your students into two separate leagues, and why not get the winners of each league to face off against each other to decide your overall World Maths Day 2019 class champion Mathlete!
If you don’t want to run your Word Maths Day celebration as a competition, simply get each student to challenge all the other students in the class with the objective of having fun and answering as many maths fluency questions as possible.
That’s the great thing about Live Mathletics, students love playing the competitive maths games against their classmates, and don’t even realise that they’re actually practicing vital mathematical fluency skills. Live Mathletics encourages speed, but more importantly accuracy so children build up their mathematical fluency. Fluency is an essential building block for further progress in mathematics and with the Live Mathletics competition your students won’t even realise how much practice they’re doing!
Encourage your pupils to challenge themselves. Make sure that they know that the gold star on Live Mathletics will show them their challenge level, and playing on this level will also double the points they score. Did you know that you can also block students from the lower levels of Mathletics?
It’s important that your students are working at the right level, check the Live Mathletics levels guide for more information.
Don’t want your students just playing games?
• Roving reporters – why not appoint a group of children in the school or class to report on the World Maths Day fun? Culminating in a newsletter and a piece for the Mathletics blog or a short video to share on Twitter?
• International Mental Maths – if your students finish playing each other on Live Mathletics you can use a map to mark each country your class plays against during some additional Live Mathletics games. Use this as inspiration to explore different time zones and to learn the flags of each nation.
Multiply the fun!
CELEBRATING SUCCESSAt the end of the lesson it’s time to celebrate the success of your whole class. Total up the scores from the head-to-head match ups and announce your top 5 Mathletes starting from 5th place to build suspense!
Use the certificates contained in this lesson pack, print them out and ensure that every student gets a reward for doing so much maths practise!
Invite local press to come and interview some of your winning pupils, this could be a particularly interesting story if you link World Maths day with a fund raising opportunity.
Create a World Maths Day Wall of Fame in your school hall. Children can contribute to this by writing accounts of the day and describing their successes. Include a mood board where children can highlight areas of maths they now feel confident in. Award each child a participation certificate to take home, including a letter to their carer congratulating them on their child’s achievements.
DRESS FOR MATHS SUCCESSWorld Maths Day is a fantastic way to raise the profile of maths in your school and around the world - but why stop at a competition? We challenge you and your students to make World Maths Day as truly memorable as possible and decorate your classroom for the big day. Better yet encourage your students to dress up in maths themed outfits.
Why not see how many Albert Einsteins and Mary Somervilles come into school, or get abstract and get your students to dress as their favourite maths symbol or number!
Have your students already made avatars on Mathletics? If so, get them to dress as their avatar to really spark their excitement!
Here are a few examples of how schools celebrated World Maths Day in 2018.
THE POWER OF SHARING SUCCESS!Decorating your classroom and getting your students to dress up is a great way to make World Maths Day truly memorable. But to really see the fun ramp up exponentially, join our Twitter competition!
Simply share your outfits, decorations and World Maths Day victory celebrations with the hashtags #WMD2019 and #Mathletics to automatically enter our competition to win £300 of Mathletics licences for your school. Sharing your in-class competition successes is a great way to help your students feel part of the global celebration that is World Maths Day!
Encourage the whole school community to retweet your school World Maths Day tweet. Get some more maths in by encouraging pupils to estimate how many retweets they think they might get!
The winning school will be the one that tweets the most creative and elaborate World Maths Day celebration photo or video - as judged by the World Maths Day team. Extra credit for the number of retweets you manage to get!
You can purchase a Mathletics trophy and wristbands for your school by contacting [email protected]
These can be awarded to your top 3 students or the most deserved student(s).
* £300 , or non-GBP equivalent, of new licenses for those new to Mathletics or the same amount off your next renewal for existing Mathletics subscribers.
* Only posts on March 14th will be eligible to win* Winning school will be notified via Twitter* World Maths Day team judge’s decision will be
