Guidelines

Please see below the guidelines for the promotional materials of World Kidney Day

2008. We were delighted to see how widely and creatively the materials designed

in 2007 were used around the world in local and national events and campaigns,

and we hope that in 2008 they will be even more successful!

At the bottom of the pages of this document you will see pictures of folders

followed by names. You will find folders with the same names on this CD, and they

contain the different files that you will need to print and produce the promotional

materials: High resolution Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, QuarkXpress (version 7) and

PDF files for graphics designers and professional printers; and low resolution JPEG,

Word and PDF files if your resources are limited and you only have access, for

example, to an office printer.

related to ISN and IFKF. Any other non-profit group conducting kidney health awareness

The WKD logo

• The World Kidney Day logo is composed of two kidneys and three bright color bars.

These colors represent the blood (red), excess water (blue) and urine (yellow) that our

kidneys filter, clean and eliminate.

• You can use the logo in color or in black & white, but please use it on a white background

and do not alter the design.

• You are most welcome to translate “World Kidney Day” and the date to your own language.

The best way to do this is to use the non-vectorized EPS file (WKD_Logo_toTranslate)

included on the CD, to open it with Adobe Illustrator, replace the “Xxxx” with the text in your

language, and import the new version in QuarkXpress.

• However, as we understand that this may not be an option for all of you, we have also

provided the logo in Word and JPEG formats, in both color and black & white.

Logos for e-mails

• If you are writing an e-mail related to World Kidney Day, you may wish to insert logos within

the body text of your message. For example, you can add the WKD logo at the top and

ISN/IFKF logos at the bottom. This can be done in Outlook using the following steps:

1: Go to the folder “logos for emails” and copy the two JPEG files from the CD to your

computer.

2: Open a new e-mail message and go to “format” on the top menu to make sure you are

in HTML (inserting pictures is not possible in the “Plain Text” format), then place your

cursor in the body of the text message where you want to insert the logo.

3: Go to the top menu, select “insert” -> “picture”

4: browse to find the

logo on your

computer, click on

“open”,

then click on “OK”.

• Please keep in mind that HTML messages with inserted pictures might be rejected if the

recipients have small storage capacity in their inboxes or tight limits on the size of incoming

messages. Also, if the e-mail is sent to more than 20 persons at one time it might trigger

anti-spam filters.

Letterhead

• You are welcome to use the letterhead for any correspondence related to World Kidney Day

2008 (for example, whenever you are writing letters to colleagues, spokespersons, health

officials, etc).

• The letterhead comes in two sizes: A4 and US/Canada “standard letter”.

• We have also provided different samples suggesting where you can place your contact

details and logos as well as the logos of your local/national partners/sponsors (if any).

• In addition to “World Kidney Day” and the date, if you wish you can also translate the short

Poster

• We propose that the WKD 2008 international campaign to the general, lay public stress the

positive message that kidneys are truly “amazing” and that they keep us alive by cleaning

our blood and eliminating toxins. In order to capture people’s attention, we have decided to

focus on the fact that, every day, our hard-working kidneys filter and clean the impressive

quantity of 200 liters of blood in our body.

• As an effective recall of visuals used in 2007, we are once again placing graphically-

simplified, red kidneys in human bodies – this time in silhouette-characters that represent

all age groups.

• To convey the sense of “every day” and of dynamic routine, we have chosen a photo of

adults in a major city heading to work. You are welcome to either use this version, or, if you

prefer, to adapt the poster by replacing this (“Western”) photo with one of your own

selections, in order to portray a more local/national scene from your everyday lives. To view

illustrations of this potential variety, please see the three sample photos on the next page.

• The size of the poster is A3 (29.7 x 42 cm). You may of course decide to blow it up or reduce

it – notably if you are using the poster as an ad in a print publication and need to match its

size to purchased space.

• The poster comes in 2 versions: full color and black & white.

• For each version, we are providing both a high-resolution PDF in English which cannot be

altered and a QuarkXpress file. The QuarkXpress and its supporting Photoshop and vector

graphics files will allow you to adapt the poster to your needs by translating all text.

• You may choose to further adapt the poster by including a brief, local or national message

and contact details in the space to the left of the World Kidney Day logo.

• If you are using the poster in English, please note that we have created a “UK” version and a

“USA” version. The difference is in the spelling of litres / liters.

• Do not make any modifications (besides translation) to the bottom of the poster. On the

other hand, you may wish to use some of the white space above the global sponsors to add

your logos and the logos of your local/national sponsors.

photo of “Westerners” heading to work in a major city with other, more local/national images that give

the feeling of “every day” routine and that work well with the silhouette characters.

• Please note that these low resolution photos are only shown to give you an idea of how adaptations of

Public Announcement

• Unlike the poster, this “public service announcement” does not include any global sponsor

logos, and can therefore be used in publications that offer free or reduced rates for public

health messages.

• The size of the public service announcement (PSA) is A4, but of course the document can be

re-sized to fit available space.

• The public service announcement comes in full color and in black & white. It also comes in

two sizes: A4 and US/Canada “standard letter” – but of course the document can be re-sized

• For each version, we are providing both a high-resolution PDF in English which cannot be

On-site Banners

• We propose 2 different on-site banners: a version with a photo and a version without, which

leaves more room for your local message. For example, the banner could be hung over the

entrance of a hospital with the message: “FREE SCREENING AND MEDICAL ADVICE FROM 9 AM

TO 6 PM”.

• The high resolution PDF files of the banners (under "for designers and printers") are

170 cm x 65 cm. If you are working in English, you can directly print these banners, using either

the UK spelling (“litres”) or the USA spelling (“liters”).

• The high resolution Quark Xpress files of the banners measure 51 cm x 19.5 cm, which

corresponds to a standard ration

of 3 x 1. If you wish the final size of your banners to be 170 cm x 65 cm, you should increase the

scale by 333% before printing.

• For 2008 we have produced two new T-shirt designs which you are welcome to distribute or

sell to the participants of your local or national World Kidney Day events.

• In the first design, the World Kidney Day logo and prevention-minded message “Are your

Kidneys OK?” appear on the front, while the back of the T-shirt includes the silhouettte

characters against a blue background and the global sponsors.

• In the second version, the silhouette characters form a horizontal strip on the lower part of

the T-shirt, circling around peoples’ waists. Unlike the first version, the silhouettes do not

include any drop shadows, so they will likely be easier to print.

• We have intentionally removed the date on the World Kidney Day logo in the 2008 designs

so that the T-shirts are less “time-sensitive”.

Silhouettes Strip

• This design is a long strip of silhouette characters intended for on-site decoration at World

Kidney Day events.

• For example, the strip could be directly printed on large sheets of paper so that the

silhouette characters appear life-size. It could then be mounted on a wall inside a

conference room or hall.

• If this is not possible, an alternative is to print the silhouettes on transparencies with an

office printer, project them on a wall using an overhead projector, cover the wall with paper,

and reproduce the silhouettes and red kidneys by painting them onto the paper.

• Feel free to use your imagination! We simply ask that if you use the silhouettes, you also use

the World Kidney Day logo and website address.

• We are providing two formats: vector (EPS) and JPEG. In addition, we are providing both the

full, long strip of 18 silhouette characters as well as smaller groups of 4-5 silhouettes

characters.

• If you use the long strip and the height of your paper is 2 meters, the length will be 15,70

meters.

Flyer

• This flyer is intended for the general public. It provides simple, very basic information about

the role of the kidneys, World Kidney Day and the prevention of chronic kidney disease.

• The format of the flyer is a single sheet of paper – either A4 or US/Canada “standard letter” –

with printing on both sides.

The single sheet is then folded once.

• The back page includes space for your local/national messages and contact details.

• You may also wish to adapt the flyer to your needs by replacing some of the worldwide

“facts and figures” in the box on page 3 with information about kidney disease in your

region or country.

• The “for office use” folder includes a “text only” PDF of the flyer.

Humans usually have two kidneys. They are located just behind theabdomen, on each side of the spine and beneath the lowest ribs.

Each kidney is roughly the size of a clenched, human fist.

Vital filtersApproximately 5 liters of blood circulate in our bodies. Our kidneys filterand clean this volume of blood 40 times every day. That’s a total of 200liters – a quantity that would fill about 200 bottles... or 20 buckets!

The kidneys remove wastes and excess water from our blood in the formor urine.

Our kidneys are vital and sophisticated organs in many other ways:

They help balance the levels of chemical substances in our bodies such assodium, phosphorus and potassium.

They also produce important hormones that stimulate the bone marrowto make red blood cells; regulate our blood pressure; help keep our bonesstrong.

Find out if you are at risk!

World Kidney Day recommends that all countries establish targeted screening programs to detect CKD among high risk groups, mainly persons:

� with diabetes

� with high blood pressure

� who are obese

� with a family history of diabetes, hypertension or kidney disease

If you belong to any of these groups, you should ask your doctor about gettingyour kidneys checked with simple tests on small samples of your blood and urine.

Help us raise awareness

You can also get involved with World Kidney Day by helping to raise awareness about the importance of kidney health and disease – for example, by participating in anactivity or event organized by a kidney organization near you.
