ARABIAN PENINSULAIt is the largest peninsula in the world and located in the furthest southwest corner of Asia. There are 9 countries in area: Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, The United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia.

DEAD SEABorders Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan. It is 430.5 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point on dry land. The water is 8.6 times saltier than the Ocean. Due to the high salt concentration, people can easily float in the lake. It’s shrinking about 13 inches a year.

TIGRIS RIVERBaghdad, the capitol of Iraq is located on the banks. This river flows through a region that receives very little rain fall but farmers are still able to irrigate their

fields. In the southern part of Iraq, the Tigris merges with the Euphrates to form “Shatt al Arab” and flows into the Persian Gulf.

EUPHRATES RIVERThe Tigris River and Euphrates form a great river system in Southwest Asia. The land

between these two rivers is known as Mesopotamia ~ where some of the worlds oldest civilizations started out thousands of years ago. The

Euphrates runs alongside the Tigris and the two merge in the southeastern region which is known as Shatt Al-Arab (picture)

INDUS RIVERStretches over 1,988 miles in length. It is Pakistan’s longest river. It starts in Tibet and flows into the Arabian Sea. The Indus River plays a major role in water for agriculture and food production in Pakistan.

GANGES RIVERIt is the holy river of Hinduism ~ 10-12 million people will bathe/take part in a cleansing in this river during the 55 days of the Kumbh Mela Festival. The Ganges Rivers starts in the Himalayas and empties into the Bay of Bengal.

HIMALAYA MOUNTAINSContinues to grow 2 centimeters each year. Covers approximately 1,491 miles and pass through India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Bhutan, and Nepal. It is home to 9 of the 10 highest peaks on Earth, including Mount Everest at 29,035 feet. They are considered to be one of the youngest mountain ranges, they are about 60 million years old. Winds can blow 200mph and it can get as cold as -80°F.

YANGTZE RIVERIt is the longest river in Asia, flows 3,915 miles from Tibet to the East China Sea. It is the third longest river in the world. They have found evidence that the earliest people lived along this river over 27,000 years ago.

YELLOW RIVER (HUANG HE)Also known as Huang He, the second largest in China, estimated length of 3,395 miles. It is called the Yellow River because huge amounts of loess (windblown sediment of clay and rock) that turns the water that color. Because of all the sediment, it is sometimes considered the world’s muddiest major river.

ALTAI OR ALTAY MOUNTAINSAre located to the north of the Gobi Desert. A natural barrier; during early civilizations the Europeans were on the western side, Asians were on the eastern side. The southeast region of this range gradually becomes lower and merges with the Gobi Desert.

GOBI DESERTThe Gobi Desert is the largest desert in Asia and is the fifth largest in the world. Located in the southern part of Mongolia. Most of the desert is free of sand, it’s estimated that only 5% of the desert is covered with sand dunes. The Gobi Desert is a cold desert (-40 in the winter), snow can even stay on some of the higher dunes; it can also be one of the hottest (122 in the summer). One region of the desert is known as “Devil’s City” ~ it go this name for a couple of reason: unexplained unusual sounds, unusually high magnetism, and the landforms look like teeth.

MT. FUJIMt. Fuji, located in Japan, is one of the most well-known and considered one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. It is the

highest mountain, in Japan, at 12,389 ft. It’s considered to be symmetrical and is a volcanic mountain. There are actually three separate volcanoes, one on top of the other. December of 1707 was the last time it erupted and it continued to do so until the first day of 1708.
