WORLD CONFERENCE OF SCIENCE JOURNALISTS 2015
June 8 - 12COEX, Seoul
2
We live in a time where science has fundamentally shifted our lives and public interest in
science is at an all-time high. This, in turn, has placed great demands upon science jour-
nalists, who are tasked with verifying and relaying information on the ever-expanding body
of scientific knowledge.
This World Conference of Science Journalists 2015 will provide a forum for science journal-
ists and scientists from around the world to discuss how science journalism can meet the
demands of these changing times, while broadening the horizons of knowledge for all of us.
I look forward to welcoming you with open arms to this World Conference in Seoul, which I
hope will be a precious and unforgettable time for all of us.
Thank you in advance for your support and participation!
Chairman of WCSJ 2015 Organizing Committee
President of KSJA
Science Journalist for the Seoul Shinmun
Jae-eok Shim
Science has established the framework for contemporary civilization, and everyone shares
in the benefits it creates. Thanks to a strong dedication to science development, Korea
accomplished the ‘Miracle on the Han River’ to rise from the complete devastation of the
Korean War, serving as an example of how science can change the world.
We are eager to see all of you, and are confident that the World Conference of Science Jour-
nalists 2015 in Seoul will offer you many unforgettable moments during your stay.
President of WFSJ
Science Journalist for the Chosun Ilbo

Get a bunch of scientists of different nationalities into the same room, and (most of the
time) politics will take a back seat to the science. The same is true for science journalists.
Day in and day out, we cover developments that propel society forward, or hold it back.
The news we chase often transcends national borders. That means when we get a bunch of
science journalists from around the world into the same room, we have a lot to talk about.
Please join us in Seoul this June for the 9th World Conference of Science Journalists. You’ll
be exposed to riveting reporting experiences related by your comrades-in-arms from the
far corners of the globe, and new tools you can use for covering science in a changing pub-
lishing landscape. We’ve put together a diverse programme that should appeal to science
journalists at all stages in their careers, from cub reporters on up to grizzled editors. You’ll
also witness a remarkable scientific phenomenon: South Korea punches well above its
weight in science, and the post-conference field trips will offer a source of immediate and
long-term journalistic projects. WCSJ 2015 will be a memorable and valuable experience:
be a part of it.
Chair of Programme Advisory Committee
International News Editor for Science Magazine
Richard Stone
Perhaps more than any other human endeavor, sports, science and journalism are all
highly international phenomena. Seoul has hosted the Olympics, so it is fitting that in
2015 it will host scientists and journalists at the World Conference of Science Journalists.
The conference will be an important opportunity for reporters and editors to gather to en-
gage and improve their craft.
In many ways, science journalism is undergoing a renaissance, with new specialized out-
lets and voices constantly springing forward. The WCSJ is a perfect place for everyone,
from a reporter new on the beat to a veteran editor, to capture the enthusiasm of this
renaissance and to share lessons learned. Journalists have left eight previous WCSJs more
energized and well-informed, with notebooks full of story ideas and new skills in their
toolboxes. Come to Seoul in June, as this WCSJ will be no exception.
